Try-04: Lonely Civs and Bismarck the Builder

Sorry guys, couldn't get to it tonight. Had a company function to attend that went later than I expected. I'll grab it tomorrow for sure. Just reading up on the latest city musings. Anyone want to post an updated dotmap so I'm not confused?

Seems like good adjustments, just need to decide where we want to stick city 3 when we get there.

Put the mouse over the tile where you want to put city 3 and see if the game pop up says "fresh water"... you will be sure that way...
I am saying that because I think you original site was the strongest... :) (cool christmas smiley btw :D)

Sorry for the delay. I had to troubleshoot the fact that I had no interface (yay BUG mod and incompatibility with almost anything else!).

Preflight check. It looks like the north pole belongs to us pretty much. I'm dropping some signs on the map where we put the dots in the planned dotmap. I'm not exactly certain why we are squeezing out two settlers in a row with basically no escort for either of them (unless we strip Berlin), so I'll be spending a lot of time playing peek-a-boo with the animals and training warriors.

Site 1 needs a boat to get there, AND there is a lion there for sure, so not going to be able to do that immediately. I'll settle site 3 first, because the capital can fogbust for us... We can't really finalize site 1 yet either until we can get some more intel, as it CAN be a canal, and there might be more seafood in the fog...

Going to do Myst followed by masonry for the GLH.

2240BC (44):

I start the chop in Berlin, although I have reservations about destroying so many trees when we have wonder targets.

2200BC (45):

Zzz... scout still healing I notice...

2160BC (46):

Wolves show up right as we found Hamburg on site 3, proving, once again, "Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good" (TM) :p. We dial a warrior for obvious reasons.

Spoiler :

2120BC (47):

The scout is healed so gets moving again.

Dial for Masonry in 5...

Great... we're not isolated...

It's AC! And we are beating him in score, so I am reminded that this is Prince. He founded Hinduism, so we won't be completely without religion in this part of the globe. But he's also Industrious, so say hi to wonder competition.

2040BC (49):

The settler is done and I order a boat to stick him and the warrior in. The chop should finish it.

2000BC (50):

The mine finishes this turn, putting hammers towards the galley, and I also switch to it to give the clams to Hamburg (and slow down growth in Berlin).

1960BC (51):

AC gets a jump on us in points, so he clearly discovered something...

Gibbon also says our culture sucks...

Spoiler :
set1gibbon.jpg

Our scout also meets a barb warrior by Rome, so yeah, trouble brewing soon.

1920BC (52):

We start farming the corn by Berlin.

Tentatively dial up Pottery (granaries and whip).

The warrior is done in Hamburg, so dial a monument, and work the clams.

The boat is also done at Berlin, so dial a 1 turn warrior, and we can send out the boat with the current warrior for site 1.

AC doesn't appear to have expanded yet, so we may have the edge on him there. Definitely get a lighthouse up in Berlin so we can eat the forests for the GLH.

Oh yeah, Stonehenge was BIAFL early in my set, but I forgot to mention that, sorry.

Handing it off here as I've finished a tech and a round of building stuff (no hammers yet invested). It's also Normal speed, so a bit faster than I'm used to.

OK Got it, Thoughts tomorrow and play report Monday.

BUG should work with the HOF mod  Plenty of people in the XOTM competitions use it.

Yeah, normal speed is a good bit different, another reason I wanted to do it for this SG - learn how to play it better. The slower speeds seem to favor the human player more.

Well, I know for sure it was BUG that was causing my bug (No interface and hitting Alt-I doesn't restore it), because when I uninstalled it, it worked again. I read about the problem on some other mod, but figured it might apply in this situation too, so I went for it.

that would explain the problem I was having too. I did not know that alt-i would toggle the interface. Another problem that I ran into while in the HOF mod, it would not display the units and other little graphics. Got it all figured out now. Good round of playing

Great... we're not isolated...
Yeah, I just checked in WB for a few maps with the same settings. Apparently 1 continent per team doesn't mean what I thought it did (seems like since the player and each AI is on a different team you'd get 1 continent per civ). In general it looks like 3 continents - so basically nobody is isolated.

Since we're only 3 turnsets in, what are everyone's thoughts on restarting the game with 'fixed' settings to force 1 continent per team?

I'm ok with that

Well... if the intention was to have everyone isolated, then I guess that would be good justification for a restart. I'm not exactly relishing our arctic start anyways :p.

Well with no objections from the team I am happy for Trynthlas to re-roll

Ralph

Ok, here's our new start:

start.jpg

Haven't moved anything, but I popped in WB to verify that we were isolated. Since there's 7 civs and only a max of 6 continents (go peek back at the first post to see the updated game settings) there are 2 civs that are not isolated to start, so they may provide a bit of a challenge, but we'll see :king:

Since I peeked a little (didn't really look other than for starting positions, but still...), I won't go first.

Let's say this:

Roster:
=======
Ralph_Jackson - kick it off
cripp7 - 2nd round
S.ilver
Trynthlas

And again, it's normal speed, but still play the number of turns that makes sense.

As far as the game, I think we should poke around for at least 1 turn, given the lack of resources visible in the starting view there.

OK Got it for round 2...

Ralph

Ok Played 19 as it got us to a natural breakpoint.
Although initial moves showed up stone not in a place we want out capital so we have gone for a spot with Pigs, Clams + Hills for good wonder production. And my Antennae are telling me the Map Generator will have given us something else probably copper or Iron.

settlestone.jpg

Now we are isolated on a big piece of land as two huts gave us 2 extra scouts so we have explored most of the Island!!

Research went AH for the pigs (now pastured), fishing for the clams + free Archery from a final village.

archerypop.jpg

Build went the classical worker, part built warrior route and we can do a workboat next if desired.

Note choose religions is on and the first two have fallen but we can pick one up later if we want.

choosereligionson.jpg

So waht does our huge real estate look like..

To the NW we have this the bit on the E is just a thin strip of land.

nw.jpg

To the SW this

s.jpg

And deep south this..

sw.jpg

So next set of choices
Research is set to BW but no beakers invested
Wonders.. What do we want..
GW as there is a lot of land for barbs to spawn in
Stonehenge for free monuments in all our cities is probably my preference

Stone :goodjob:...I'm in favor of the Great Wall, especially since we have Raging Barbarians.

I think we should focus heavily on our economy and tech pace (since we're isolated). It may be worth it to get the pyramids and use a specialist economy with representation, given the amount of food resources we have available. Thoughts?

For a second city, should we drop it 1N of the stone, to grab it and the corn, plus hills to the north?

With the abundance of food but limited amount of River I favour an Initial SE whihc would point us to the Pyramids....

But with raging Barbs on I would defeintely choose GW first. Maybe too late to wait to hook up the stone in building the Great Wall so maybe just chop it in?
