TSG41 After Action Report

I've just finished a second playthrough of this GOTM with a 332 turn wins instead of 331.. I changed my strategy and went 4 cities at first and managed to pull off Rome initial attack, then took advantage of his DoW to conquer 2 of his city but it really didnt work out well in the end. I realized that puppetting cities would hurt my tall empire and after seeing "Tabarnak" 23 :c5citizen: city on turn 210 i realized how badly I screwed this gameplay.. Constantinople was around 11 :c5citizen: by then.. Ouch.. 1 more turn... I'll try for a whole new cultural victory with new settings :ar15:

"I am now trying 2C again, and my capital demanded crab for the first 'demand'. There is no crab at any AI for the whole game"

Settle it yourself, buy two workboats, then gift the city to a friendly civ.

Got an 1852 date. Everything went amazingly well early (Dido took Rome's second city, then suicided her army into a Roman city during the 10 turn wait before I joined Rome in wiping her out with cataphracts and xbows) until Petra was completed in an unknown land while my Engineer was on the road to the desert city.

Got Stonehenge and Pyramids ridiculously late (around turn 80) but that meant the Engineer was late too. Didn't really need the Henge for faith, but the boost (+festivals and monasteries and +30% pressure radius) meant all but four cities on the map ended up Christian and Tithe was nuts.

Monty spammed literally 20 cities and had no religion of his own. :D

Should have purchased culture buildings with my 10k gold - have to try that next time...

Kept Carthage and Rome while razing all the other cities - probably a bad idea with Swords to Plowshares as my bonus belief as the wars lasted ~ 60 turns (waited to position 3 cannons for each city). Keeping six cities was at least one too many, but settling the third city upriver from the capitol then stealing the city states' tiles with two GG's was sweet - that ended up being a 6-turn Utopia build.

Straight up Tradition for the food boost in the capital due to all the plains tiles. Constantinople ended with 44 pop and that's with missing HG and 11 landmarks. :crazyeye: All the bonus culture from festivals and monasteries meant that Patronage came early, and with the money from Tithe, the science boost from allies was significant, as was the culture from Mandate of Heaven (always had happiness > 40). I'd have trouble forgoing Piety for that reason.

Opened scout, worker, granary, shrine, GL. Built/stole workers, bought settlers* with money from selling luxes. Pretty late on the Nat college as I was getting more settlers than I'm used to from those proceeds. Maybe the fourth (western, intended for Petra) city was superfluous as at that point it was clear that war was imminent.

* - food poor capital needed to be growing

Got to end this today in two bigger Session on my PC after I started 2 weekends ago on my crapy Laptop at pool

Overall I am pretty OK how game went, difficulty lvl seems to be a pretty good one - AI will beat you to wonders if you are too slow for them but you get them if you really try to. Also it got enough money to trade and dont die very easy in war - well it does.
My goal was sub 250 - done so I am happy :king:

policy order: (most important in cult game i guess)

Trad starter
Lib till reduced costs - also finished it as 2 or 3 CS wanted an aritst pretty early on so I got one with finisher - d not otherwise
fill piety
1 or 2 filter in patronage
fill freedom
free broastcast towers :) got nice timing just after filling Freedom tree and bulbing with scientist just built the turn before
fill Patronage
fill Tradition

Overall I gotta say that Tradition beats Liberty pretty much now - but well Liberty worked OK for me aswell and huge cities have not been THAT important - even when helpful for teching - not sure if I d have shaved many turn with Tradition as I m not sure about the power of the cheaper policy from liberty. I just wanted the free and faster settler as I was not interested in delaying the wonder spam longer as any needed early on. Well my Cap had pretty big growth problems - guess with Trad and Petra it would end like size 45 instead 33.

But size isnt everything :) maybe, well I leave this question for Ribanah the queen of speed
Well we might be good couple as I am king of speed :( oO

Teching was Calender
Poped writing in ruins and got then gl instead Henge as 1. wonder
towards Optics to scout
then towards CS
then towards aque
then towards Astro
then towards Sistine chapel tech
then towards Louvre tech (bulbed it with Oxford
then towards cult tower tech (bulbed it with GS from PT)
towards Stutue of Liberty (finished building it when Utopia halfway done - still it shaved a turn)

as you see I priorized scouting techs before cult techs as finding Ais and espacially CS is just so huge
Cultural CS all the WAY!

BO
scout
start monument
switch shrine (really tried rush it - wanted 1. or 2nd reli)
monument
granny
buy worker
GL
Buy settler
free Settler
Settler
Henge
NC
HG
more wonders ...

4 Cities overall (obvious plant spots I guess apart maybe the 4th in dessert)

Reli I chose (obvious choises)
2 Gold per City
cult for whine and insc
the 3 buildings
and 50 free faith per used dude

What really helped was my 4th city at left dessert between those sheeps, after Petra and Stables it became a huge powerhouse and had same shields as Cap in end (about 130 when prod focused) I could build lot of wonders there while CAp was after turn 120 totaly focused on growth and cult production

Overall lessons:
Not much have changed to vanilla for cult victory, its just not needed anymore to tech deep into Sydney Opera

Early on prio isnt culture but building the important wonders and teching (growing cities), faith helps.
Cult should come mainly from CS (aly them as soon as any possible)
Well and then obviously boost cult as high as any possible (5 artists in every city) once Industrial era is reached

from this point on also go for neverending GA - calculate when next artist or other possibily for GA comes before planting an artist (GA>>planted) - I think I even started the neverending GA too late (like turn 130) should start it turn 100 about

I go bed now :)

comments to other games:

I changed my playstyle a bit in my last games and focus on Education as fast as possible instead of Metal Casting and it pays really big later with faster snowballing. I tought it would make a difference to build workshops early but it doesn't seem to be the case anymore with proper strategies.

At some point in game you should have enough gold from GA and trading (edit: and conquering) that u can buy like half (edit: or more) the buildings you want anyway - so workshops are no prio at all for me

MCDave
I watched a bit of your video and well - you play total different style as I do, I see that a settler in turn 20 is very nice but then I just prefer a size 5 cap which is building a wonder in turn 20 - but might have to rethink.
I think your ships were a bit over the top - 8 or so of them? 3-4 should have done the trick, others were idle most time anyway

RobSmith
Edit: I tried a 4th attempt and first contact with Spain was T119 (using 4 Droman against Dido and Rome to get a Admiral). But Freedom T167 so no chance for a sub 250
This is actually a good idea and I thought about doing it aswell but then when my Coastal city was prepared for doing something else as prio1 stuff I was like -30 turns from astro away and could not be arsed and just got a carvel and 2 scouts instead
Astro is just 1 tech away from compass and at some point u need it anyway

Overly I will quity definatly play next gotm with tradition and might try a early settler - this looks just tempting

Nice improvement! Did you go full Liberty or Tradition? Or a mix of them like DaveMcW?

177 hmm? Robert Smith entered freedom even sooner(i think i entered this tree around 190 in this game, haven't replayed it). It seems more obvious now that it will be THE ultimate key for fast cultural victories.

Withdraw from my third and 4th attempt as someone beat me to Petra(4th) and start with a 3 peoples capital(3rd)

I went for Tradition as you can get aqueduct superfast with these early culture from wine.

The major difference between my game and yours is I stop at three city which make last policy way cheaper.

I made two major mistakes which as slow me down.

1- I try to get all landmark in my third city but without the 2 food from maritime CS, you just can't fuel all your landmark + full artist specialist. Your capital have to be your cultural city mandatory.

2- After I complete Piety as second Policy tree, I went for the right side of commerce. I think the best way to go would be to stop at 5 policy from Piety, then switch to tradition and get Free Worker and golden age. That way, you'll enter Industrial era in golden age which make you breeze through Freedom (And also get an accessory another 10% from policy).

In my 4th attempt, I stop after I lost Petra at turn 85 (which suprise me a lot as I no one had pick Hanging Garden yet, and I hadn't built it by that time in any of my 2 first attempt). What I was trying was to get Hanging Garden in my third city, north of the rock, west of the mountain. Which get you your garden even if it's not by the river I was hoping.

Impressive, to say the least. And very logical. Could you possibly post a screenshot for our amusement? I specifically wanted to know how many artists you planted.

My last one poped at 1300 so overall 13 great dudes, Got 2 scientists (the PT one also increses counter, doesnt it?) and used 3 for GA. Makes 8 Landmarks + academy + 3 Faithmarks (+a late one).
Oh an 3 from Religion so its been 11 Landmarks and 4 Faithmarks I think

But fast finsih really isnt about no of Landmarks but about filling Freedom fast and getting all the multipliers (Allhambra miss d be like +10-15 turns I guess while a missed landmark is maybe +4 turns)

edit: ll post SS when come home, but nothing special to see on it I guess, my Cap is relativly small and 11 Landmarks are kinda default I guess

Lost, diplo win for Monty.. :( But I almost won! I'm happy with my results and with what I've learned on Emperor level. I usually win King, so Emperor is my next step, but I still haven't mastered it.

Couldn't do much about it, well, I could have by attacking many CSs or Monty himself. But he (and Augustus) were constantly many techs ahead of me. I had 4 spies stealing techs from them, but even then I failed to gain onto them.

I finally conquered Augustus (about year 2000) after almost constant war, with many losses on both sides (he had the better army, I had almost all the military wonders and buildings, which gave me uber units out of the box!).

After that point, I should have started CS capturing. When you do this, it's possible CSs start losing trust in you, does this affect you allied CSs as well? If so, the better strategy would have been to attack Montezuma directly.

I finished 24 policies, 1 left before the Utopia Project. I guess that I should have focused way more on culture (earlier Piety completion and choosing Patronage in stead of Commerce). I was also forced to choose Honor, 'cause of the warmongering Romans on the island.

It's a pity, though, because the beginning of the game went really well! I managed to find 5 or 6 ruins (only the last one culture :(), I got my policies in the right order for rapid expansion without too much policy cost increase. I managed early Maritime CS alliances (hunt many, many barbs + camps when they're targeted). I built my second city in the middle of the desert to the west in a hill an built Petra there. What a kick ass wonder it is! Best production city, got huge (as large as Byzantium). But after the wars with Augustus and Dido started, the rapid growth and flourishing economy decreased to a military focused empire, where I should have gone for a scientific lead (RA's went quite well, though).

Religion was perfect in this game. By the time my fellow island civs founded theirs (quite late, maybe even the last 2 religions!), my religion "The Mirage" (for the desert near Byzantium and around my second city) already spread the entire island. I chose:
- Desert Folklore for extra faith from the aforementioned desert
- Just War for +20% (that's a lot!) military strength near enemy cities (to kick some Roman ass)
- Tithe for lots of cash, went really, really great since the entire island followed "The Mirage"
- Papal Primacy for +15 resting CS influence
- Monasteries for extra culture from the huge amount of wine and the incense
- Cathedrals for the culture bonus.

After the Cathedrals an Monasteries were all built, I alternately bought GPs and GMs, for the extra faith and extra cash/influence.

Finished my first GOTM ever, turn 282.

Got off to a good start with Tradition and was quickly filling up Piety when Rome declared again and again. After a while six City-States wanted Sugar, but Rome didn't want to peace. Managed to steal it with GG after what felt like an eternity.

A certain somebody decided it's a good time to interrupt me every 10 turns when I was near turn 150-170. Didn't pay too much attention and foolishly missed Freedom opener by one turn. Add in a couple of other mistakes such as being too lazy with citizen management, and, the worst of all, a failed production overflow trick for Utopia Project ()

Made me miss sub 280 for sure and probably sub 270 as well. Still, a very fun challenge, and that desert city to the west was really really sick with Petra (most overrated wonder imho).

Need more GOTMs ;)

This is my first Game of the Month. Got a cultural victory in turn 351 (1931). At the beginning Rome was very aggressive and attacked my 2nd city to the east of the capital. Easily defended with 3 bowman and 2 warriors. Launched counterattack and pushed them back to their cities and then fortified in the mountains. After that they tried to take them out, but never succeeded.

This was the end of story with Rome. Dido was just passive and defended Roman invasions (I actually helped them to kill some Roman units to keep them alive almost until the end of the game).

The major setback for me was very late exploration of other continent so I couldn't get cultural CS to be my allies. My strategy was to have only 3 cities - capital, one to the east and one to to the south (coastal). This with CS's allies got me to 880 culture and 950 science per turn.

I got almost all the world wonders in time. After I found other continent China has already wiped out all other civilizations on it and had a huge empire with more than 20 cities. They almost beat me with scientific victory, but I managed to win culturally before that. Just in case I sent a fleet of 5 land units, 2 nuclear submarines (with nuclear missiles) and 3 battleships just north of Beijin so I could strike if they got too close to building a spaceship.

Good game.

Social policy path:

  1. > Tradition (all)
  2. > Piety (all)
  3. > Patronage (3 polices until I entered Industrial)
  4. > Freedom (all)
  5. > Liberty (until the policy that gives a GA and reduces policy cost)
  6. > Finished Patronage
  7. > Finiched Liberty (for the GE to plant it for the Utopia project)

Religion:
Pantheon
3rd to found a Pantheon, took the +1 culture an +1 faith from Wine and Incense (as the start location had lots of wines).

First Prophet
Had the first great prophet when I already had 3 cities. Founded Christianity
Took monasteries (to increase dramatically the culture and faith, as had plenty of wine) as the follower belief.
Took +1 c for every 5 f as the founder belief,
+1 f. for evr city as the bonus belief (plan to increase faith dramatically, for a mass conversion, and to later use it to buy great artists).

2nd Prophet
took Itinerant Preachers (+30% conversion range), for it to spread faster and to win over other religions.
took (+1% production for every follower) as the second follower belief to make wonder production quicker.

General strategy & history

At first I started with one city (moved settler one hex to the bottom right to quickly plow through tradition, in this city, i built:

- Scout;
- Monument;
- Shrine;
- Worker;
- GL; (used free tech to take Philosophy);
- NC;

Early in game made quest to ally to Brussels and get my culture flowing.

After I had my capital strong and big enough, i made 3 settlers and got the following spots:
1. ADRIANOPLE: right above my capital (wich ended up a really decent city), with two wine spots;
2. NICEA: to the right, next to the marble and sugar by the mountain. built an observatory there and it got to be a decent science city;
3. ANTIOCH: to the left, by the river in the desert, manage to build there the colossus and petra, so it became a really decent city;

Build all three, kind of in the same time, general build order:

1. Shrine
2. Monument
3. Amphiteathers

As soon as i got monasteries, i quickly bough 4 monasteries in all 4 cities. Soon, my religion spread really quickly in my continent and in the bottom islands (with the CSs).

Some turns after i built those cities, Rome DOWed me, and I had to stop building wonders and had to build some composite bows and send them to the NICEA to defend the invasion. Some units and the favourable terrain defended me against the legions and ballistas. Made peace quickly and just after Dido came with some elephants, also was easy to repell. After that didn't have any war, the maximum i had was Wu getting angry about me spreading Chritianity over her cities.

Rome finally also took Carthage.

Got really slow in going to the sea. So when i finally got navigation, i had 5 missionaries waiting to navigate through the seas, and i was tossing by then 1 missionary every 4 turns, so it was a giant conversion mission. Wich actually was pretty sucessful, in the end game, i had 114 fpt (37 from religion) and 1141 cpt (83 from religion).

After my religion was up and going the top priority was dicover the culture related techs and build the culture buildings and wonders as soon as possible, and go to freedom as soon as possible. As soon as the mission was over, started saving faith for great artists. And as i got to freedom could purchase (and produce naturally 3 or 4) GA, first planting them, them to keep in GAge till the end of the game, so, as soon as I hit a natural Golden age, i kept it using GAs and the Representation.

So, next was hitting end turn through the end.

My mistakes: could be more focused about science and get earlier industrialization, to be able to take earlier freedom, and also to manage to get to build the Sidney Opera House, maybe it was possible to shift some 20 turns by doing that. And could have done some RA to make me achieve that.

About City States: was very aggressive on that fullfilling quests, wonder spamming and using religion, so by the time both wars finished i got allied pretty much everyone on the continent and the bottom island. In the end I was allied pretty much with everyone except some militaristic and mercantile ones.

Really enjoyed the challenge and I could see the map was tailored for a cultural victory boosted by religion. My 1st GOTM, actually i joined the forums only to participate this.

Must give credit to MadDjiinn as his LPs taught me a lot.

I beelined to currency specifically to get Petra because I figured I'd have to settle in the desert to the west at some point. Managed to get Petra and took Desert Folklore as my bonus belief too so that city was awesome. Actually, the computer wasn't too interested in building wonders at all, I finished every one that I started, (got about 20 or 25) I was second in science, just behind Rome the whole game.

Caeser DOWed me 5 times during the game, although I forward settled on him so I expected that, which is probably why I had no problem beating him off every time. He was a pain all game, he destroyed Carthage. I took a couple of cities from him, and liberated Carthage, hoping Dido would act as a buffer because I was sick of Rome. Didn't last long though, he steamrolled over her again in about 15 turns, haha.

Wasn't my favorite game ever, Cultural Victories are kinda boring, and I really wanted to destroy Caesar! Just played defensively most of the game because I was busy building Museums and Broadcast Towers :)

Hi there, my second GOTM and my first ever time playing on Emperor (the previous GOTM was my first time on King). Had a great time playing this one.

Upon realising my neighbour was Caesar, I nearly gave up immediately! Never had more trouble with any other AI leader. I persevered however, and the result was very interesting (to my untrained eye anyway!). It went like this (as best I can remember, the gist is correct at least):

After I met Caesar, I stumbled on Dido. Rather than trying to ally up with her or otherwise use her as buffer, I decided to just court Rome as directly as I could. I tried to get luxury trading going, as well as letting him have Strategic resources and gold. (Never as tribute though - does that encourage them to think you're weak? I don't know but I didn't want to risk it.) By the time - or not too long after - Dido was taken out, Rome was "Friendly" and had turned its eyes to the many city-states on our continent. These CSes were, however, my ticket to super-growth in Constantinople - so I effectively bribed Caesar off of attacking them, even as I kept our friendship up.

Relative to other reports I've read, the AI in my game was either being incompetent, or my foreign policy was being effective. I essentially tried to maintain excellent relations with Rome, and play everyone I met off against one another. Caesar, eager to war anyway, would readily accept deals that took him off to war on another continent - and this took all the pressure off of me and my city-state allies. In fact, by the time I was touching the Modern era technologically, I was actually in a defensive pact with Caesar. (Our bloc was Byzantium, Rome and France.) The biggest-looking threats were China's stab at space, and India's (whom I didn't discover until very late in the game) shooting (it seemed at least) for Cultural.

My constant sowing of DOWs between the AIs seemed to pay off at least, because no AI civ got beyond building the Apollo Project, or three complete Social Trees. Only Dido had been wiped out, and only France had lost their capital. The score is terrible of course, but I feel pleased to have won a Cultural victory on Emperor at the very least! It was great fun.

(P.S. On a specifically G&K note, Espionage was a useful supplement to my bank account for keeping City-States on-side, especially when Gandhi started stealing them all; Religion seemed less useful, providing only a small culture boost and perhaps one or two Great Artists - but I may not have used it as effectively as I could have.)

Fun game! Settled NE on the hill. Nearly lost at the beginning, and China only needed 3 more spaceship parts at the end. Survived the first Roman war by using my free General from Honor to drop a Citadel 2 spaces east of the capital. I love citadels.

Got my second city over in the desert, and got Petra for the first time.

Most obvious mistake was missing out on Sistine Chapel and Terracotta army to India. I suppose the solution, once I had my fleet together, would have been to send spies around until I found where he built it, and then invade? Maybe?

A reasonable first-attempt at a G&K culture game, but could have been much better had I avoided a couple of howlers and a few lesser errors (see below). The main point of interest in my game is that I seem to be alone in having no wars (none at all!). Rome took over Carthage fairly early but I managed to maintain an (initially uneasy) peace with them throughout the game:- by the end we were best RA friends. I was even forgiven for tech-stealing!

What I did wrong:-
1. Chichen Itza!!! I completely overlooked the renewed importance of this wonder for cultural victory in G&K. It went early (to India) but it was mine had I given it the priority it deserved. No CI cost me at least 20 turns of happiness-induced GA before I completed Freedom (after which a permanent GA state was achieved)
2. New GS mechanic. I forgot that a GS gives beakers instead of a tech, so messed up my jump into the Industrial Age and Freedom policies

These two strokes of genius cost me about 30 turns overall I think, so I could have finished mid 280s with a little forethought. Other lesser mistakes /issues include:-

3 cities only (maybe 4 better?). My city sites were fine but left me with no great fourth spot. I was planning to settle on the S coast wine which had some nice fish and jungle tiles, but Dido beat me to it. I am still not certain that 4 beats 3 cities for culture conversion to SPs (taking happiness bonuses etc into consideration), but the extra science probably outweighs this:- I didn’t reach the Christo tech by completion.

GE wonder-building mechanic. I was planning to use completion of SoL as the final stage of my hammer overflow into Utopia but, lo and behold, a single GE brought in to help built it in one turn! I am not used to having such large cities where this can happen!

India completed Patronage early, which severely holed my CS support budget

Playing CiV during the Olympics! My brain and computer struggled to multi-task flicking between the Game and The Games (go Team GB!)

What I did right:-
Diplomacy, so it appears. I prioritized early Faith and used a Prophet to convert key Roman cities. I had the only religion on the continent. Shared belief and a strong defensive line (or maybe sheer luck) kept Rome off my back.

Religious beliefs. I took the wine/incense Faith boost, cathedrals, monasteries and 33/66% religious spread. I was rolling in Happiness:- even selling all luxuries with 25+ pop cities I had over +50 happiness for most of the game (providing a significant culture boost) and went over +100 happy near the end (my second image shows a 1000 culture/ +100 happy Byzantine civilization)

City placement. Capital (hill 1N of start point) was a grand spot. Second city next to E mountains was a great defensive location. Third city on W coastal river with sheep hills was a star Petra city which ended up as my industrial powerhouse for Utopia building.

Espionage. I stole some very useful mid-era military techs (Gunpowder, Chemistry, Rifling) to maintain parity with Rome.

Uggg. My first GOTM and although I won, I didn't do it with style.

Rome declared war early, and we were in perpetual war for 230 turns. That hurt my growth. Missed GL on last turn; wasn't even close on Petra.

But the real problem was Montezuma. By about turn 250 I could tell he would win the game with science. So I had to churn out two armies, one for each coast of his continent. He had destroyed China, eroded India, captured at least two CS, and captured three of Spain's cities. And despite everyone thinking ill of him, they declared I was the warmonger!

So I took over half his empire. Hence the huge final score. I must say, battleships have been vastly improved. They do not require line of sight and so can basically act as quick and mobile artillery against any city or unit within three tiles of the coast after proper upgrades.

I used my spies mostly defensively. I kept the cultural CS so they would not be stolen by coup. And I kept one in my capital, although she failed to protect me even once from theft. And I kept one in Monte's cap to keep an eye on him. Stole one tech, so that was a bonus.

My goal with religion was to generate gold, which it did nicely. Could have done better, though.

Fun game. Thanks all.
