[TSL] Yet (not) Another Earth Maps Pack

I've put together city-state locations for the "Greatest" Map.

First, my notes on difficult decisions:

Spoiler :
TLDR: Some places are overcrowded, and the (intentional) map distortions made guesswork necessary in some places. Native American history is heartbreaking.

Specific notes:

Europe took a lot of guesswork. Switzerland, Italy, the former Austro-Hungarian Empire, are all overcrowded!

Many cities were right on the line between two tiles. I tried to make educated guesses.

I moved Kathmandu a tile east of where I felt it should be to accommodate India.

Tibet, rightly or wrongly, is all mountains. Therefore, Lhasa had to be moved way north of where it really is.

The other parts of Inner Asia (Almaty, Samarkand, Kyzyl, Kabul) were also approximate due to map distortion and mountains.

Kuala Lumpur, Malacca and Singapore (seriously, did Firaxs try to make this difficult?) are all on top of each other. I gave up and put them in a row.

The Levant (Tyre, Sidon, Byblos) had the same problem.

I know Jerusalem's not on the coast. This is one of those between-two-tiles things.

Brussles/Antwerp? Seriously? Why are these both... Whatever. Moving on.

I put Ormus in roughly its real location. It may be better, for gameplay, on the south side of the Persian Gulf.

I think there's a mountain where Antananarivo (Wow that is hard to say/spell) should be. Same for Yerevan.

I moved Mombasa a little north to accommodate Zanzibar. Really all of Africa was a little distorted.

Looking at Prague's location relative to where I put Vienna made me reconsider where I'd put Germany. Should Germany be one tile to the West?

Rome and the Vatican are the same. It would be *great* if one could code in something like "IF X-Civ is not in, THEN use Y-City-State."

I am overjoyed that Kyzyl is in the game. GO TYVA! :D However, Siberia is wildly distorted, and I had to guess (again). Also I wish Kazan and Sibir were city states. And Baikal a Natural Wonder... moving on.

For "Cheyenne," I went with the approximate location of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation.

For the Sioux, I approximated the location of the late-1800s Great Sioux Reservation.

I sincerely wish that I didn't have to go with reservations, but those locations are better defined than the vast expanses of the pre-European-contact territories of those peoples. Input from experts would be welcome.

Garamantes was a nation/state/polity. I went with one of its capitals, Germa.

And now the actual city state locations:

Guessing at these locations was lot of fun. We live in an amazing, crazy world!

Thanks !

Yep something is definitively wrong here, I'll have a look.

Played around and I think I figured out the problem (or can at least narrow down where to look). I generally play with no city states (they annoy me) and with 'Don't scale resources to number of players' set to FALSE. If I increase CSs (I tried with the default 55) OR set 'Don't scale resources to number of players' to TRUE then all is well (resources show up--I verified with lua.log). So, looks like the problem is with scaling resources to number of players when the number of CSs is low (or just 0).

thanks, I think you've found it, yes :goodjob:

Hey Gedemon, just an FYI in case you didn't realize - Brazil's capital in your map is nearer where Brasilia is located, though the civilization has Rio de Janeiro as the capital (which is a coastal city).

hi sorry to bother,

is it possible to use these maps without TSL? i tried moving the maps just into the map folder but resources arent generated. maybe im not moving the correct things.

very nice though! :)

Also, Assyria's capital and Babylon's capital were too close to each other - one or the other would settle, and the other would just sit there. I moved the Babylonian capital down to a better position, and also fixed up Brazil's.

If anyone wants the fixes I put in for Assyria and Brazil, here's what I changed my CivilizationsStartPos.xml file to say (under the giant map stuff):

Code:
<Row>
	<Type>CIVILIZATION_BABYLON</Type>
	<X>43</X>
	<Y>50</Y>
</Row>
<Replace>
	<Type>CIVILIZATION_BRAZIL</Type>
	<X>169</X>
	<Y>24</Y>
</Replace>

Also, due to a pet peeve of mine, I tend to change Polynesia's starting point to where Honolulu is actually located (for anyone interested):

Code:
<Row>
	<Type>CIVILIZATION_POLYNESIA</Type>
	<X>115</X>
	<Y>52</Y>
</Row>

Yep, thanks, has already been reported (maybe on steam) and will be fixed on next version.

I'm going to request your help again, I want to make a small component that would spawn ethnic barbarian units, depending on the region of the map.

I need a list of available models that could fill the role for each continent (or region), that include UU, R.E.D. modpack units, and available units from the database.

Do you have suggestions ?

Hmm, O.K., you're asking me right? Is there a list of units or anything I could tap into to check that out?

Asking everyone :)

We can start by the Unique Units, discussing why one could (or not) be used for barbarian.

Then there are all the units in the download section.

Planned regions could be:
European
Mediterranean
Middle-East
African
Asian
North European
North American
South American

The unit types used by barbarian are:
Warrior
Archer
Composite Archer
Spearsman
Swordsman
Horseman
Musketsman
Infantry

Sorry for a noob question, but am i playing your map? (yet not another earth map pack) vs 21?
I don't really understand the question :)

the map pack is v.21, but the maps are not "mine", I've just "coded" them in (see first post for the authors)

which map are you talking about ? it's a pack :)

Sorry, should have been more clear ;)
The Yet Another Giant Earth Map (180x94) was the one I was asking about, I played about 100 turns with BNW and wondered why the culture overlay wasn't working so started new game with a vanilla map and opened it no bother.

The version on steam is updated for BNW.

I'll upload it on CFC next week-end I hope, with the fix and new starting positions posted on the thread.

First of all thank you very much for this map pack been having a blast ever since I found it.

Before BNW came out I did some modifications to the maps included in the pack, but after updating to BNW the mod doesn't read/load if I make new changes to the maps.

Am I missing something or forgetting how to do it right cause the map pack is updated to v.21?

I still have the option to do an "Advanced Set Up." Not really sure when this information was posted. Really in 2010? I'm trying to download this map pack so I can use it with your Historical Start Dates MOD. I tried on another True Start Map. I started at the right time, but in a totally wrong place. I tried to start one on this Map pack, but I can't see the maps in the options when starting a game. Any help?
