I read a great strategy article on this site today regarding city specialization. I took what I had learned ands started a new game - Spanish, Continents, Chieftan. I found a great place for my first city - following the formula, I had enough food to start with a GP producing city. With a couple of farms placed was getting close to 10F early, so the populatiuon grew quickly. It grew much faster than I could handle and before I new it I was wasting 1F and had 2 unhappy citizens. I couldn't find much to build to help alleviate it after the aqueduct.

What kinds of things can I do to help correct unhealthiness and unhappiness?

You have to use your workers to hook up resources that add either health or happiness and make sure that your cities are either connected by roads, rivers or coasts(?) in order to share those health/happiness bonuses.

Here is the page for each city improvement: http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/info/improvements/

When you population equals either your health or happiness (whichever comes first) you have to stop that city's growth or you could whip away the unhappy citizens w/ the slavery civic ... that's a good tactic if you have alot of food and a fast growing city. Whip to build other improvements and/or military units whenever your population exceeds its health or happiness numbers (there is a delay between whipping again).

Trading excess resources to other AI's that are willing to trade back resources that give health / happiness bonuses also is a way to boost the limit that your city is at. Try expanding towards resources that give what you need.

Remember when you are whipping to cure unhappiness: try to whip on a large, expensive item rather than a small item like a military unit. If you're only killing off one or two of your pop with your whip, then the "cruel oppression" unhappiness will quickly build up, and you'll have more problems than before.

The other thing you can do if your city is just growing too fast is take a few pop off of the farms and make them specialists, so that your city isn't growing, or is growing very slowly.

Another thing you can do is build settlers or workers, and the pop won't grow.

Two other things you can do as a last resort: starve the population until you lose somebody and are back to your limit, and click the button to prevent city population growth.
