There was a prior discussion about this at the end of the last game, but it split off into 3 other discussions and this point was left in the dust. We need to decide how to approach this issue and decide if we're going to make a standard or law or what. This is important and will cause problems if not addressed and formalized.

Dis made a proposal saying how the game should be saved on a pre-turn basis and then discussed. I like this idea. I'd also like to see screen shots of the options chosen before the OK button is pushed (similiar to what Donsig did at the end of last game).

After the pre-turn has been discussed, I'd like to see the 10 turn per chat brought back with no authorization to go beyond the 10th turn. Discussion in the forums should be required before another 10 turns is done. This is not to say playing a full 10 turns is required. If the DP or citizens feel that the chat should be stopped to bring an issue to the forums, then it should be stopped.

I don't believe there is a need to rush through the turns to try and liven the game up. Citizen discussion is what enlivens the game. So can we decide on how the turns will be handled in the chats?

I'm fine with a 10 turn cap and an early stop option at the discretion of the DP. There should be some discretion at the beginning of the game though. It's quite possible to have 10, 15 or even 20 turns go by with absolutely nothing happening except common micromanagement.

I agree with Shaitan.

How about a compromise, perhaps peg the limit on turns based upon the game date or age? Say 20 turns in the ancient era, 15 in middle ages, and 10 on, or numbers as desired.

I do think more turns in the early game doesn't hurt. But cyc's idea overall is an important one, and well founded.

By the middle to end of the ancient age we'll probably want to be at 10 per chat. Things are generally cooking by then. How about 20 turns per chat for the first 4 chats then 15 per chat for the next 4 and 10 per chat after that?

I like Shaitan's Idea. Nice, even, and spread out.

You also have to consider periods of anarchy. IIRC, our last revoulution took 9 turns, and that was the industrial age. There should be some additional turns during these periods without goverment.

Even if the early turns don't accomplish much, I think 10 is a nice round number.

Sample Chat log:
Turn 2: Built warrior
Turn 8: Built woker
Done!

Ok! Let's go have a drink!

On a more serious note:
Nothing was easier when we played 10 turns at a time. Then I'd know when my deals expired and be able to re-evaluate the situation easier. After all, expiring mid-chat deals caused us that Rome Trade Embargo.

That said, if we want to do some 15's, I think that's ok. Just not for too long.

what about defining which things require a stop?
like running out of build queues
war
etc.
?
so we have a list of what can NOT be decided in the chat, which makes it clear when to stop it (even if it would be after only 1 turn sometimes).
my proposal was mainly only for the first playout=the game setup... just to clarify this ;-) maybe someone could do this as soon as the polls are complete about game-setup? or maybe as soon as the forum is cleaned up...
we then have enough room to discuss first steps.

No, there's no hard/fast rule about what should stop a turn chat. I'm fine with this. If the DP has confidence in what they're doing then that's enough validation for me. That's what they're elected for, after all.

@disorganizer - Do you mean the turn -1 thing? I think that was a great idea. It could be done by a mod or Chieftess as soon as we know for sure what our options need to be.

I would even propose a mod as we dont have a leader for the new nation.
Lets say it like this:
GOD CREATES THE NEW WORLD FOR US AND GIVES IT TO US!

And so i would propose DOM to setup the game and give it to us as save. We could then take shots and things until the 1st, and we could have our 1st turnchat of the new game as a real one! As this one will propably only be short (we dont know much of our world and 10 turn in the start is pretty awful as we know from term1) and maybe only 1 city (the capitol) will be founded, we will have soon much to discuss ;-)

Want to put it up for a poll? We could then have our save immediately at the start of the new forum!
(Like the thread: FROM GOD: YOUR NEW WORLD IS HERE!)

I will put up a poll on the turn0-thing and a hypothetical poll between shaitan and eyrei on who to play god ;-)

I would still propose a kind of "stop list" of things which will trigger an immediate stop. together with a "10 turns" rule of thumb and a "commitment to less turns" in the 1st term, this could work fine.

examples (imho, to be discussed):
* declaration of war (of any kind)
* settler without forum-decided build location available
* tresspassing of foreign troops without ROP if not pre-accepted in forum
...
is that enough?
