Two Wonders per city?

I played a game yesterday and I always use one or two citys to produce the wonders. I had opened the city management window to look at the wonders I had built in one city. I noticed that the bonuses were not in effect on many of them. Then I hovered over one on them and it said only two wonders can be built in each city. Is this true? I played civ3 were you can build many wonders in any city.

OK, I just went back into that game. It says only two national wonders per city.

I hate that stupid rule too. I think it was a hack rule put in so that no human player can make a city that gets too strong.

There are a certain number of NATIONAL wonders, that can be built once by each civ... these include Heroic Epic, National Epic, Ironworks, West Point, Globe Theater, Oxford University, Red Cross, Mount Rushmore... and probably another couple I've forgotten...

You can build a maximum of two of these in one city. The reason is presumably game balance - if you could stack HE, WP, RC, IW in one city you could build units at a 150% production bonus (+any other bonuses) with 6xp (including barracks) and Medic I... obviously a bit too much

For other wonders, there is no limit, in theory you could build all the world wonders + 2 national wonders in one city

Ohh please, it's ok that the AI gets rediculous benefits, but god forbid a human player stacks his city buildings smartly.

But the AI is under the same restrictions as you: two national wonders per city. Also, the AI doesn't get ridiculous benefits under Noble, though it does receive more benefits than it probably needs, under v2.08 (with the new, better AI from Blake).

You shouldn't have any trouble at all destroying the AI under Noble or Prince, once you learn the rules of the game. Monarch and Immortal, of course, require quite a bit more optimization and patience. I don't really like the requirement of micromanaging all my cities, so I typically play at Prince or Monarch.

I like the 2 national wonder per city rule. I think it makes the game more interesting, as you have to carefully plan your national wonder locations.

It also equates to real life in some respects. In politics, leaders and parties in a large country with many regions have to attempt to allocate various projects to each region, lest they get accused of favoritism. (I'm Canadian, so I'm VERY familiar with this issue!) When you're building the last few national wonders, you're probably running representation or universal suffrage, so the rule roughly equates the demands of the populace that you treat all regions equally.

Even so, yes, it's artificial, but aren't all the rules in a game artificial? I mean, not allowing footballers to use their hands is the height of artificiality; try going through a day without using your hands! The whole idea is to overcome the challenges posed by the rules of the game and win.

Hm, in my country, everything gets built in the capital... :D

Which country is that, may I ask? Somewhere in Europe, I'm guessing?

You're right, it's Croatia. The capital gets everything, and other cities can have only 2 national wonders :) . But we are little bit off topic now...

This is all a non issue.
It is in fact a help for city specialization.

It's the rule of the game. No cheating, no bad balancing here.
In fact it is somewhat a balancing rule, since the AI uses the national wonders in his own way (=no plan).

But I must say I like cIV for those multiple decisions you have to make and to coordinate to make your whole empire strong.

Do i go for religion?
Do I build a courthouse or a unit?
Do I go to war? With whom?
Do I make friend with Toku?
Do I build those theatres everywhere to be able to build globe theater in this huge food city?
Do I build the National Epic there or is it better to leave room for forbidden palace?

This is all giving the game it's depth.
