Ubisoft dumps it's DRM.

Yeah but at least we go one or two steps down the scale of evil

UbiDRM < EA DRM < Steam < Stardock < Paradox < gog.com

Not really, since I don't have internet for my home PC.

It's like they're blockading me! But to my joy, I read books now.

FWIW, I skipped Assassin's Creed 2 (on PC) not because of the DRM, but because AC1 was a pretty awful game once you figured the controls out, and I didn't feel like playing more of the same.

AssassCreed 2 is a better game, they fixed most of the repetitiveness of the first. If it wasn't for the DRM, I'd buy it.

Paradox' only DRM is that you can't view the Tech. Support on their forum until you register a valid CD-key for the corresponding game.

Yeah, i've heard of gamersgate, I am trying to avoid having yet more digital distribution passwords/accounts kicking around :) One of the reasons I use steam when possible.

Yeah I understand that believe me...

I limit myself to Steam, gamersgate.com, and gog.com... I sometimes... rarely... use Impulse. But screw D2D and such.

I give gamersgate priority, because I can easily keep a backup of my games' install files on a hardrive AND I don't need to install any program or anything to run the games. You just download the game from the website and there you have it. However, I like Steam because, more often than the other platforms, it has awesome specials on "hot" games. I also actually like its IM features and how it resembles XBOX live. So I sometimes play non-steam games through Steam anyway.

I bought some stuff off impulse and have discovered they have an absolutely horrible buggy system. I won't use them unless I have to.

I love gog.com. I have a DVD with all my gog.com games on it, yay lack of DRM.

You can do backups of Steam games too, you still need internet to activate them, however.

Ubisoft has confirmed to Shacknews that the always-on DRM in a few of its PC titles has been patched out, including Assassin's Creed II and Splinter Cell: Conviction. The Ubisoft representative reminded us that this was done on a case-by-case basis and that from the beginning the company had said it might patch the DRM out at some point. New games, however, may still ship with the always-on DRM, Ubisoft confirmed to Shacknews.

Users on Reddit are reporting that the PC versions of Assassin's Creed II and Splinter Cell: Conviction, previously infected with Ubisoft's always-on DRM, no longer require a constant connection to the Internet to be played.

Now, the games will supposedly only check legitimacy over the Internet every time the game is launched, but can then be played offline. It's not quite hassle free, but it's certainly better than having to maintain a constant connection or suffer an interruption in gameplay, especially in singleplayer campaigns.

So, they're finally phasing this out, atleast on games that have been released for some time, which is probably the best you can expect right now.

Wonder if it affects all copies of these games or only those bought after today. I'm guessing it's all of them, no point keeping the bandwith working for only a part of the populace.

The article says it's being patched out, meaning removed from all current copies, and won't be in effect for future purchases, I'd assume.

This is most certainly good news.

Since this thread is bumped. I love GOG too. Some of the games suck, but oh well. I can download under a gig to my USB drive at school without hassle or some kind of installation code.

My guess is that piracy is highly overrated in terms of its impact on the gaming industry. I am almost convinced that the people getting pirated games would not be customers anyway. They would just not play the games.

Almost? I pirated every game under the sun for when i was 14 till about 24, I had bugger all $$$, so there was zero chance that I would buy a game unless it was under $5.

Now dispite having a bigger and faster internet connection these days I havn't pirated a game for years. Last 50 game I have played I have brought.

The Main Cause of Piracy is most game like music and dvd's is they are just far to Expensive. All the Publishers are just to @#$@!#$ greedy.

So even while I have a lot more money, there is no way I am going to pay more than $10 for a game, movie or cd.

What are the bad side effects of DRM? I remember that I used to dislike it, but I have forgot too much about it...

I know that Steam is also criticized for some reasons. One I remember is that you have to register the game online in order to play single player offline.
