Uncharted Territory: Aabraxan Plays Nice.

You need 5 stock exchanges for Wall Street. Only actions which increase the culture in your 20k city help you finish faster.

Wall Street is nice, but Hoover is mandatory. Always build it, no matter what sort of victory you want (but its best for space).

I've missed Hoover's a few times for 20k games, and I do have some of those in the HoF actually. Hoover's *only* gives you 2 culture per turn, yet costs 800 shields. Also, in a 100k there rarely seems a need to build Hoover's if ever. Pretty sure I didn't build Hoover's in my Huge Deity Histographic game either, as I know I didn't build factories. I don't see it helping in a diplomatic game really either. And of course, plenty of conquest/domination games never get close to Electronics. I strongly disagree... Hoover's has very little value in most cases, the spaceship game comes as the exception.

Hoover's is nice, but I wouldn't say it's mandatory for every game. In a 20k, your win should be assured -- now you're just striving for a better win date -- by time Hoover's comes on the scene. In a 100k, one strategy is to ICS, switch to Communism, and build Factories everywhere -- then Hoover's would make building the remaining culture buildings go VERY quickly. OTOH, you could also go with Feudalism and start pop-rushing culture buildings in the AA.

That's MA (middle ages)... just a detail.

If I was doing a 100 k game and was anywhere near hoovers I would go straight for the internet, i think replacable parts and republic is more useful than commumism for culture building

Chapter 6: Where was I, again?

Oh, that's right: 20K and play nice. Harumph. :gripe:

Just for giggles, I've built a few privateers. I do a quick run through cities, and off we go. Babylon is willing to negotiate, but I have no interest in that. I haven't DOW'd (that I recall), but I don't *have* to accept peace, either, do I?

In 1290 AD, one of my privateers sinks a Persian galley (if I remember my boats right), creating a new Privateer. Privateers really are fun.

That same year, Refining comes in, with no SGL. Steel in 4, and I have oil!
I trade electronics to Gil for Communism and 42 gpt, and what's left in his treasury.

I know I said I'd be good, and I am . . . I'm also crowding their territory. Maybe someone'll DOW me.

In 1310, Sumeria completes Universal Suffrage. Drat. Switching to the MA now would waste 50 shields. Switching to Battlefield Medicine wastes 0, so that's what I do.

In 1310, Steel comes in, no SGL, and Batt Med is completed. Here I come, Military Academy!

1315 - Sumerians begin Magellan's. Gotta go check the culture value on that. . . .

Hmm, 3 cpt. I trade Gil out of Navigation and swap Aabraxa to Magellan's. Due in 5.

In 1320, Xerxes comes to see me:

Ordinarily, I would say, "Really?!?" Unfortunately, the Persians are currently sending me Incense and Dyes, so I'm going to comply. Pooh. :gripe:

In 1335, the Russians begin Magellan's. Mine is due in 3.

Some of you may recall from Awn of an Ynasty that the Dutch kept running units around in circles right before they attacked me. Well, the Russians have been doing the same thing at Frankfurt.

Combustion comes in, headed for Flight, though I am looking forward to Mass Production and commercial docks.

By this time, I'm itching for somebody to declare war on me.

Magellan's comes in. On to the Military Academy.

Note: I have come to realize that I just don't have it in me to finish a complete game as a story. Like every one of my other tales, this has devolved into, more than anything, an AAR. Please accept my apologies, and thanks for bearing with me.

Crud. I just realized that Flight, in which I have invested one turn, will make the Colossus obsolete. I don't have a commercial dock in place to make up the lost income, so I switch from Flight to Mass Production for the gold.

I must also admit that I've grown weary of peace. I've made a few demands and I'm just dying for somone (preferably someone on my continent) to DOW me.

In 1360 AD, Alex shows up & offers an MPP and ROP in exchange for the same +5 gpt. I don't think so.

Mass production comes in. Set research for Motorized transport so that I can get a commercial dock in at Aabraxa before I hit Flight.

As of 1375 AD, Aabraxa has amassed 12,405 culture, and is producing 103 culture per turn. Its nearest competitor, Ur, has 4,227. On the empire-wide culture front, my civ has 21,798, while Sumera has 30,011.

In 1390, Hammy of the Babbys shows up, wanting peace. I can no longer remember who DOW'd whom, but I'm presuming that they DOW'd me. Between the possibility of War Happiness and the fact that they're almost an age behind in tech, and don't have anything I want . . . no, I think I'll pass on peace. I've been unsuccessfull in getting anyone to DOW me, and the boredom would kill me if I have NO ONE to fight.

In 1405, Flight comes in and I draw Ecology as my freebie. I contemplated doing a whole lot of Big Picture Trading during the IBT, but decided against it.

Life continues fairly uneventfully until the mid-1400s. The Russians send one spear into my lands, but remove him when asked to do so. The Babs keep sending ships to my shores. I keep bombarding them and sinking them.

In about 1440 AD, Fission comes in, and I swap to the UN, set research for Computers, and call it a chapter.

The save is attached if anyone cares to take a peek.

AAR?

Albuquerque Animal Rescue?
Association of Alexandria Radiologists?
Australia Antarctic Research?
Aabraxan Amazing Retelling?

I don't recognize that acronym...and couldn't find it Acronym Attic.

But I have enjoy what you have done and written. :D

Acronym Attic Repository, perhaps? :p

I've seen AARs in other places -- no need to apologize for writing more in that style, Aabra. It's fun to see your progress, with or without a goofy story to go along with it :)

Chapter 7: Back into Charted Territory, Aaparently

I'll finish this game, one way or another, but the boredom is killing me. (In case anyone missed it. I'm pretty sure that my next game will be AW.)

In 1490 AD, the United Nations is completed in Aabraxa, taking it to 114 culture per turn. Up next: SETI, due in 14.

At about 1500 AD, I decide to go ahead and invade the Babs. I've been at war with them for ages, and nobody else seems to want to go to war with me. So I might as well go ahead and invade them. In 1510, I take Eridu (about the 4th Bab city to become mine), and I see one of the Babylonian King units inside. No clue how many they have, or where they are beyond that. I had forgotten that I was playing Mass Regicide.

Once invasion begins, I honestly try to play nice, but it's tough. I don't DOW anyone new, but I'll guarantee you that Hammy hates me.

Somehow, Hammy talks Sumeria into signing a trade embargo against me. Hmmm, maybe that's because I've systematically kept Sumeria broke as a joke. Well, harumph. :gripe: I've been itching to DOW Gil for centuries now, and I've held off because he was a lucrative trade partner. . . Then I remember that an embargo doesn't affect the 348 gpt that I'm getting from Sumeria.

By 1535, I've razed a couple of Babylonian cities (old habits die hard), and watched the Russians disband some units. Greece and Sumeria sign an MPP that year, and SETI is about 5 turns out. Culture =15,918 at Aabraxa, & 121 culture per turn.

In 1545, Rocketry comes in, with Space Flight next. Not that I expect to use any SS parts as prebuilds (given that I've been moving straight from one wonder build to the next), but who knows?

Ok. By 1550, . . . I know I said I'd play nice, and I've tried. Well, except for this whole war with the Babs. By 1550, I'm within a couple of tiles of capturing a native source of ivory. I'll make peace as soon as that is mine. Honest.

Then, the Persians send troops into my territory, and I give them the boot order.

The Persians DOW me.

Drat! I was buying Incense and Dyes from them. I have to bump the lux slider to 30%, and mm a few additional cities for happiness. Well, I guess if I'm at war, I could try to capture those luxes.

In 1555, I get an MGL! (That may well be the first one of the game!) And the First Tank Army takes the field.

In 1560, a second MGL is garnered. I knew there was a reason to keep that Crusader around. Then, a THIRD MGL is produced! It's the first time in a long time that I've gotten 2 MGLs in the same turn. On the IBT, SETI is finished, pushing Aabraxa to 124 culture per turn, the Pentagon becomes possible, and Sumeria begins the Manhattan Project. I begin the Internet.

In 1570, Persia succeeds in getting Sumeria to sign an alliance against me. Sumeria DOWs me! My income drops by almost 600 gpt. Time to put my hobnailed boots back on, I guess.

Step 1: Tech trading has been pretty lucrative and I've been able to save up over 12k gold. Time to spend some! I go through my cities and rush lots of builds, spending almost 6K on units and disbanding a number of temples and libraries that I no longer deem important. You'd be surprised how much 6K will buy.

Step 2: Drop a city on the ivory in Hammy's territory. Name it Ivory Coast.

Step 3: Make peace with Hammy. He's broke with only a few cities, so I don't expect him to be very effective against the Persians. I get an embargo against Xerxes and Gil while I'm at it. If Hammy breaks the embargo, he'll have to DOW me, and that's OK. I could use some more WH. I grab his maps while I'm at it.

Step 4: Call Otto. For Industrialization, he'll give me an alliance against the Sumerians. Actually, he would give me an alliance against both the Sumerians and Persians, but I want him to concentrate his forces against the Sumerians. I'll go ahead and get an embargo against Xerxes, though.

Step 5: Call Cathy. She'll ally against Gil and Xerx for 650 gold and she'll throw in a worker to boot. Sounds like a deal to me.

Step 6: Take all those arties and bombers that I bought and whittle down from 35 units in my territory to 16.

FINALLY, WAR! :dance::ar15:

Here's the save. As always, questions and comments are welcome. Sorry that I didn't get any screenshots, but I was just itching to get this closer to finished.

I haven't posted nearly enough screenshots lately, and stories are always easier for me to follow if I have some screenshots. With that said, and without further ado, here's the city view of Aabraxa:

The Sumerians are attempting to invade from the southeast, where I share borders with them, the Germans and the Russians. Mind you that the borders with all of these are very short. The Sumerians have to come through a bottleneck to get to me. After I got my first round of attacks, here's what the Sumerian stack looks like, and where it is.

What do you use to get your screenshots? I never can get the enemy stack listing into mine, so I'm a little bit jealous!
