UNGY5 Let's keep it simple!

If you needed a substitute; I'm able to play civ again and am very motivated to play :D

Good to hear :goodjob:. While i don't plan to pull out i have been distracted by other things lately so feel free to take the next after Rusten.

Had forgotten about pretty much everything when I sat down to play--such a long time since the last set. After 10-15 minutes reading the thread and viewing the save I felt good to go (I still might've forgotten something though).

OK--let's get it going.

I find Izzy having 110 gold available so I trade her guilds for it. I could've given her something cheaper like compass, but I want her to get knights.

Ramesses picks nationalism from liberalism and I decide to steal it. Izzy has marble and after seeing 2 forests nearby our capital I semi-calculated that we would finish the Taj Mahal first.

Civ4ScreenShot0460.jpg

Horses to Izzy for gold, crab, marble and 4 gpt.

However, the turn after stealing nationalism Ramesses decided to start a golden age with a GP which turned things around. Instead of competing for the Taj Mahal I decided to construct the HE in Constantinople.

We are likely to run bureaucracy most of the game and with the Pyramids we have easy access to US. Some of these cottages are already towns, and the others are very close so Constantinople is an awesome commerce and hammer city (especially with a leevee). Running representation isn't that good either as we're focusing on hammers and there are almost no bonus buildings so I see it as a great fit.

I traded nationalism+some gold to Charlemagne for education.

More trades with Izzy (2nd source of ivory up the turn after this deal).

q50000.jpg

Madrid makes for a good GPP city. We won't have control over what type we get, but at this point I imagine their primary use is golden ages anyway. I set Madrid to run an engineer to increase the odds of an eventual GE (mining inc).

Civ4ScreenShot0462.jpg

I had yet to see any sign of the AP by turn 160 (1000 AD) and our cataphracts were getting reckless, so when Ramesses taunted me by leaving cities wide open like this I couldn't help myself -- I declared war.

Civ4ScreenShot0463.jpg

We took both Giza and Vandal on the first turn (some bad combat rolls).
I kept Vandal as the other city (Alexandria) capable of working the riverside gold doesn't have access to a food resource (and has plains incense already) so I'm thinking we lend Vandal the corn. The city will own with SP and a leevee as well if we play that far.

The AP threat wasn't much more than losing the hammers from temples -- we have so many resources and the hippodrome. Either way it became a non-issue, because after abstaining from this vote there was no leader (Ramesses got close).

q60001.jpg

After declaring on Ramesses I decided to have a go at the Taj Mahal after all. I started it in Madrid instead of Constantinople as the production was similar, Constantinople has the hammer bonus from the HE and because Madrid is the GPP city.

q70000.jpg

I also start on the Moai Statues in Saxon (time to start growing this city).

1020 AD I sabotage the walls in Thebes and land 15 cataphracts next to it but things didn't turn out as well as I had hoped -- Ramesses puts all of his units in there before I get to attack. Now we have to wait for siege (and will most likely lose the Taj Mahal).

I give some surplus resources to Izzy 1030 AD.

I wasn't planning on stopping yet, but it came to my attention that Ramesses is ready to capitulate already(!) so I guess people should be allowed to chip in with thoughts. Personally I don't think it's a good idea -- I want his wonders and cities.

good to be moving again--and well done Rusten!
w/o seeing the save I'd be inclined to play for elimination--we need Thebes and the holy city for sure and there shouldn't be much left after that--the rest should come quickly. We might be a while before we go after Charlie and we'll have culture trouble if we leave Ramesses.

ungy - what about me rejoining?

And how does the roster look like anyway? :p

mystyfly--I'm OK with you coming back--you didn't screw us up when you had to pull out and we're down to 4 w/o you.
Roster:

Rusten--still warmongering
Dirk on deck
Ungy
Mystyfly
Silverbullet

Captured Thebes. Going to hand the save over to the next player now.

The spoils of war:

Taking Thebes wasn't costly:

x10001.jpg

I decided to research gunpowder which is in now. It allows chemistry for better workshops and nobody had it so we can trade it around. There are 2 main options, either to trade it to Charlemagne for PP or to do it for liberalism.

x20000.jpg

Both techs are needed for communism, but I'm thinking PP is better seeing as we can possibly extort liberalism from Ramesses. He has one city which doesn't have many good tiles, is far enough away not to bother us and it would be completely owned by HRE culture. We can accept his capitulation when that's all he's got left.

Switched to caste as we're running out of tiles to work some places and it boosts workshops. I haven't optimised cities--it might make sense to assign some priests instead of other stuff, but the game is won anyway.

Doubt the save will get back to me again.

So, I guess Asoka is next?
He is the one civ we don't want to vassal but instead to completely kill. We can gift his useless cities to Izzy and take his good cities. After that We can kill Charles with a huge number advantage.

I agree to trade for PP, our bureacracy capital will like the extra commerce.
I agree the game is won. The other continent is probably backwards with only 2 civs and will be an easy grab.

Thanks for re-adding me to the roster.

Everything is looking fine. Great to capture cities like thebes. Are there more similar cities waiting to be captured or may we stop the war? I personnally would keep up warring to limit ramsses' land more to deny him the possibility to break free later - and so we can reach domination more easily.

Communism is next tech target. Astro is a prereq for it and I would suggest we focus on that first; not for observatories, but to get more AI contact, more trades and galleons so we can keep on warring smoothly once we run out of enemies on our home continent.
I would trade for PP while starting research on optics followed by astro. If the AIs get some more techs we can trade for, we have astro to get about everything the AI could have to offer to us.

Well done Rusten , we have a lot of great cities now. Indeed the game seems to be won.
Probably we just keep on warring on our continent and laugh long and loud when we meet the other conti.

I can play on Sunday, report Sunday or Monday. If Mystyfly wants to play sooner that's fine with me.

ungy is in line before me. I could play on wednesday but neither thursday nor friday. I need an OK from ungy to play tomorrow or I'll leave it.

K, we'll see. I think it's a good idea if you play tomorrow. I can still play on Sunday and we'll have good speed on it again.

I disagree. We can get SM by researching chemistry, and that's were we should go. With enough workshops, caste and forge, we can build research in some production cities to get to communism faster.
It is also on the way to steel which we might need to take out Charles.
Astronomy will come easily via trade.

Regarding Ramesses - I agree with Rusten's suggestion. Leave him with 1 city and then capitulate him and move on to Asoka.

Mystyfly you can go ahead and take it. I think you should mostly finish Ramesses--all but the far W city are good.

Just remember the variant.

As we're pretty well cruising, I'd say we can lengthen out the sets if the active player wants.

I'll come in after you mystyfly as I can play before the weekend.

Steel is definately the better path--we can use those cannons.

OK, playing now. Primary objective: Capture as many cities as possible (who would've thought??).

Hehe, remember when I built a library in ungy01 (espionage game)? :D

First off, I hope "lengthen the sets a bit" includes 20-turns-sets  I just got carried away a bit :D

I first dial up Charly and do the trade suggested (gunpowder for PP) - just that he also wants a whopping 890g! I say to myself "so what" and agree. In hindsight, this trade was quite stupid, first, I gave him the gold to upgrade his knights to cuirassiers (and AIs are horse-happy...) and second, I gave him access to his new top-defender, and protective muskets aren't so fun dealing with...

1090AD
Ramsses gets a GM in the city I could take this turn (Memphis) but with only few damaged defenders left. I decide to wait, hoping he'll settle the GM.

1100AD
I capture Memphis but no luck - the GM is on his way somewhere to cashbomb (whatever good this does to the egyptian economy). Anyway, the city has some nice buildings which make the trip worthwile. Also, during the battle for Memphis, we get a GG which will be attached to a cata to make another super-medic. Thing is, we won't be able to form two decent stacks (charly is doing good power-wise) so I should've settled him.
Civ4ScreenShot0076.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0077.jpg

1110AD
I capture two more cities, Elephantine and Heliopolis, both unspectacular cities. Now, Ramsses is down to one city, Pi-Ramsses and I let him capitulate (and get Banking and Optics).

Civ4ScreenShot0080.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0081.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0083.jpg

Now the war is over (and the 5-turn-delay faded away) I switch to Theocracy and Mercantilism. I don't see why we were in OR, an expensive civic good for infrastructure phases. And we are not in a infrastructure phase right now so I'd rather spend the money on teching.
Civ4ScreenShot0084.jpg

I also catch a glimpse of charly's SOD:
Civ4ScreenShot0085.jpg

1120AD
Galilei is born in Madrid. As Madrid also is the city with the highest beaker output I build an Academy there.

J/K :D He's still chillin' around there... He'll bulb SM or can kick off a GA... Whatever.

1130AD
Civ4ScreenShot0086.jpg

You might notice Wang vassalizing voluntarily to Charly. I wonder whether he'll regret that soonish... :satan:

1140AD
Chemistry in, select Steel for cannons.

We make contact with one of the overseas AIs. His score indicates how he's doing...
Civ4ScreenShot0088.jpg

1190AD
I feel ready to declare on Charly-man. He does have a big stack of units which are nearly all killed on the first turn of war, at the cost of a treb and a few brave catas. We get a GG who gets settled in Adrianople.

1200AD
I switch to slavery, firstly to whip the ex-egyptian cities and for emergency-defender-whipping in threatened border-cities. The lost hammers hurt, but at least we don't need the CS-spec-slots. Priests FTW!

1230AD
After long years of bombarding and harsh fights, finally the first city, Florence falls. I also happen to forget to take a screenshot. Those catas that have 2MP left immediately march on.

1240AD
We get a GE in Madrid. He'd bulb Replacable Parts (like we need that), could rush some wonder or kick off a GA.

While our quickly-advancing catas capture Nuernberg (which was flipped by a spy who got caught:() a GG gets born who settles down in Adrianople as well (now Constantinople and Adrianople both bulid 11xp-catas).
Civ4ScreenShot0089.jpg

I alt-click on a city bar and ctrl-click on "Trebuchet" to start trebs everywhere as Steel is due in 1.

1250AD
Steel > MT

---

A few notes:

- We barely had any siege units. As the catas had decent odds, I decided to wait until steel hits home. We now have the money to upgrade our remaining trebs (a treb->cannon upgrade only costs 80g!). Together with the completing cannons everywhere we're fine.

- We have about 30 catas. They have some issues with the high-%-defences. We'll soon have effecient defence-removers and probabely another city revolt to speed things up a bit. A spy is on the way (probabely build a second to be safe).

- When I smashed Charly's SOD I nearly always had around 70-80% odds but won at least 90% of the fights, I have overall been quite lucky. We could be in quite a worse shape now but won't have any problems anymore.

- We have 2 super-medics. Make sure they split up when someone decides to split our forces up in 2 stacks.

- I decided to tech Military Tradition next, on the way to cavalry or so. It doesn't matter, but might speed things up a bit. I doubt we'll get to communism anyway.

- We should probabely switch back to CS to get those hammers back. There shouldn't be any need for emergency-whipping anymore and basic infrastructure is in place everywhere.

- While I tried not to build any of the banned buildings, it might have happened. There are just so many cities asking what to build every turn. I carefully scrolled down to catas usually but might have misclicked (tough I doubt it).

- A look at the power graph nicely summs up our achievement lately:

- Any ideas for ungy-06??

View attachment UNGY5 AD-1270.CivBeyondSwordSave

OK- got it. I'll take a look and post up a few thoughts later.

Actually I did have an idea for Ungy06 --the health nuts. Can't do anything that worsens health --no unhealthy buildings and no chopping forests.

Sounds like a neat idea for Ungy06 - we could spend quite a few turns to find a suitable starting location if we get a forested start.

Regarding current game- I don't think it matters that much anymore, but there is no real value to military tradition. We would do much better with replaceable parts->steam power or scientific method->communism.
