right - i just don't upgrade them until they're ready for drawn out marathon games... i just let them sit within some cities bombardment range until they've got the 150 exp for blitz+march.

Ballista's are strong, 18 instead of 14 strength. But normally not that much siege units in the ancient. And I'm going to save musketeer and minutemen.
Minutemen because they have awesome ignoring terrain costs and
Musketeers because they are strong and later you can promote your skilled musketeers as foreign legions.

I guess/hope after ballista and ship of line , the middle tier begins.

The musketeers have to go before the minutemen. Seriously, it's a unit you have to hard build that only has the advantage of being stronger than a musketman. At least you can upgrade minutemen and get the terrain ignoring bonus for the rest of the game.

Musketeers don't upgrade anything. They lose all 'uniqueness' on upgrade, which should realistically (for France) be about 2 turns later as you GS/RA to Rifles.

adding in a build first cost, two upgrades to FL, these aren't great unless you're on Marathon; even then, the Minutemen is better. Save it instead :D
 
I can't wait until people have to start deciding between longbows and chu-ko-nus. Which will be the better crossbow replacement? But for now...

Musketeers and later foreign legions. You have then already skilled musketeers, no unique promotion through musketeers but some should have gotten some upgrades because of being 25% stronger, so less dead units. You can only build musketeers, there is not that need to build also a cav or even LSM . For their own they wouldn't be that good, except that they have a good base unit. But together with foreign legions I think they are middle tier and mohawk,jaguar,ballista should die first. And I also think that minuteman is better than musketeers, but at my vote I gave it them, because they were lower at that point.

Spoiler My Thoughts :
-Ballista 14 (-6) Not the greatest UU ever, but not too bad, I'm surprised its recieved so much hate.
-Ship of the line 8 (-12) A useful unit on Islands maps but otherwis, doesn't help too much. By the time that I get these, I already know if the game is won or not.
-Companion cavalry 14 (-6) Upon release, I'd say that the CC was the most powerful unit in the game, but the penalty against cities that they now suffer from drops them out of my personal top 10.
-Minutemen 7 (-13) Not a very useful unit for me, though I'm surprised that the B-17 went out before them as the B-17 can be very useful in a Industrial Age start game.
-Camel archer 21 (+1) Not really a powerful unit.
-War elephant 23 (+3) The better of the Chariot-replacing units can be quite useful when fighting an early defensive war, get these guys Blitz and they can be useful hit-and-run units.
-Mandekalu Cavalry 29 (+9) I honestly haven't played that much with the Songhai, but I might want to give them another try if these guys are as good as their results might suggest.
-Mohawk Warrior 14 (-6) A very situational unit IMO, not very useful
-Cossack 21 (+1) I usually don't use Cavalry units after the Middle Ages, so I've only used a couple of these in all my hours of Civ5 playing.
-Immortal 21 (+1) Meh.
-Legion 25 (+5) A useful unit, but not what I would expect from a Civ that conquered most of the known world.
-Foreign Legion 22 (+2) Comes too late to do much good in a game that has already been won or lost.
-Jaguar warrior 22 (+2) Similar to the Mohawk Warrior, but Jaguars can come in handy in a AW game.
-Longbowman 30 (+10) The range of three can make a horde of these deadly, just give them the Seige ability.
-Naresuan elephant 22 (+2) An okay unit, but like other mounted units, I don't have alot of use for these.
-Chu-Ko-Nu 29 (+9) A very useful unit, but like other early bombardment units, they lose most of their advantages after they get upgraded.
-Samurai 31 (+11) A poweful unit, well-timed unit that can do some good-sized damage.
-Janissary 39 (+19) BEST. UNIT. EVER.
-Musketeer 12 (-8) Like the other French UU, they aren't that great because of their timing, and inablity to be upgraded to.
