I've noticed a consistent pattern. Whenever I am about to attack and a unit has a 'pending' advancement the odds don't seem correct. For example, if I have a tank that has those 'blue sparkles' and I promote it to '+20 % city attack', I frequently will LOSE those units in a battle *during the same turn*. Maybe there is a bug where it is subtracting the advancement or something? I am dragging the mouse while attacking and the 'stats' are telling me that I will win, but I don't.

Anyone else seen this?

The stats do NOT tell you that you will win. They tell you the likelihood. Upsets still happen.

Even if that is true, I'm still seeing a very consistent pattern of losing battles that I would normally win if I advance/promote the unit during the same turn as I attack. Its happened over a string of 5 different games which
seems just a bit too conincidental for a bad string of random rolls.

What other variability is there in those stats? I thought I read that there was much much less chance involved in Civ IV. However it would explain the archers taking out my tanks and gunships.

Are the units you promoted still weak from previous battles?

If not then perhaps you're right. I haven't encountered this yet.

This is a good point, your recently blue guys are probably also down quite few hits. You did heal them back up before sending them into the fray again didn't you? FWIW, I've been playing for a while and haven't seen this trend.

Sometimes they are slightly hurt sometimes not. For a tank it might be 24.2 instead of 28 or something like that. I usually fortify until healed if the combat 'odds' are too close. If its 24.2 vs 8 I'll attack and I've been expecting it to win (especially if I just promoted 10% str or 25% city attack).
