Unit Preview: Shaolin Monk

I thought you were out fishing and wouldn't be back till new years? ????
Perhaps you have a tale(no pun intended) to tell Kal-El? :mischief:

Anyway, I like this unit. One complaint is that he looks like hes wearing sweat-pants and a sweet shirt, making him look almost.....Gym Teacher-like

The Chinese broadsword is commonly used in Shaolin forms. If you don't believe me just download kazaa, and download some videos, or make friends with Chinese people, or go to a martial arts competition. Shaolin monks are very proficient with a variety of weapons, and if given the chance to use one, probably wouldn't choose to battle unarmed. They certainly never fought for real without weapons by choice.

Since I've got to redo all the renders anyways, I'll check with Kinboat and see if he still has any robes lying around in his library that I could play with. And also, before I go through and redo all the renders, is the shadow density ok as it is or should I drop it from 75% down to 66%?

School? I take it your going into the technology bit? Good....I thought you were going to become a Marine....

.... Kal-El is in Navy Intellegence.

Allright, here is what I was thinking for Attack B. I haven't changed the wardrobe or anything yet. I just wanted to get your reactions to the actual animation, and see what you thought of it. This is probably the most taxing animation I've done so far, having to change his plant foot so many times. But hopefully it's worth it.

He doesn't look balanced. i.e. it looks like his plant leg is angled forward when it should be strait up and down. Try it yourself, if your plant leg is leaning forward you are going to come down forward toward your opponent, whereas if the plant leg is perpendicular to the ground you can come back down in your original position.

Making animations with such moves is really hard I guess, you are advancing very quickly :)

Agree with Kal-el about the leg. Gravity is a harsh master. ;)
It looks like a cool start, but those white shoes make me think of sneakers :twitch:, are they historically correct, or?

Thanks for the advice (and for the pics Kal-el). The problem was pretty easy to fix. I just locked the feet into position and shifted the hips so they're now directly over his plant leg.

As for the sneakers :) , the images I had either had the monk wearing white shoes (more modern pictures) or white socks with sandals. I couldn't find a good pair of sandals, so I just left them white. But I have just now found a perfect pair of sandals that I will put on the final version over white socks.

I don't think I have the kind of 'robes' others are looking for here. Light and floaty are hard things to do in Poser. I posted the long kilt I used on the Egyptian Monk in this thread http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=1397395 But I have a feeling it isn't what people want here. Plus it would make that excellent kick animation very hard to do without his leg popping through his dress. I don't have time to make any pajama robes now... as I'm falling behind on other projects. But maybe sometime in the far future.

Thanks Kinboat. The long kilt is very cool, but it wouldn't really work for this one. But once I started playing around with it, it did give me ideas for future units. :)

I did make some minor adjustments to the unit, and I've now finished it up. It's about 2 in the morning here and I'm wiped out, so I'll post it in the units forum tommorrow. Until then. :)

CamJH,

This is a really great unit for being one of your earliest attempts @ 3d rendering. I am quite impressed. I did have two small requests that are closely related. I was wondering if you could post the Shoalin Monk attacks without a sword in his hands? The sam kick attack is perfect just with out him holding the sword. Also if you could maybe add athird attack with a combination of just punches without any weapons. That would allow all users to decide if the monk is as agressively natured to carry a sword or just uses his body and meditation as his weapons....

I might do something like that. The only problem is, I would have to change just about all the poses along with it. The fortified stance (which is also the basis for attacks, victory, and death animations) wouldn't make much sense without a sword being in his hand. I'd probably have to come up with a different stance alltogether and try and work that into the already existing animations. I've got a lot of other things on my plate that I've kinda put on hold trying to finish up the unit as it is now, so when I get a free minute I might whip something together. :)
