Unit Producing and Upgrading Oddities

I was playing a game recently and I completely ignored the bottom tech tree after Mining. I could not see iron even though I was in the Industrial Era thanks to Biology. Along the way, however, I WAS able to buy Catapults. They are supposed to require iron, but I couldn't mine or see it. Apparently, my city-state allies could, however, and they gave me some (even though I don't remember ever seeing it listed.)

I have also seen situations where I have teched past upgrade paths for units. For example, I got Replaceable Parts and Infantry before Rifling and Riflemen. I could buy or produce them, but I couldn't upgrade my standing troops.

Any other oddities like this I should look out for?

I think someone needs to rearrange the Tech tree to align these upgrade paths

That is simple, flip the positions of Chemistry/Fertilizer with Metalurgy/Rifling Then add a connection from Rifling (old Fertilizer position) to steam power.

What about connecting it so you have to take Replaceable Parts before Electronics to keep the Infantry-> Mech Infantry transition in line?

In a game as Songhai currently, I got a message from a city-state staying they had provided me with iron long before I ended up getting it in a research agreement.

Wasn't in a position to do anything with it, but it did happen.
