Unit Request Thread

Yep you found it, would be awesome to have that for an anti-ship/sub warfare helicopter in the Naval mod.

UH-60 Black Hawk is done; download it here.

Nomad, you are a beast man, thank you so much!

Question though, is there any way the Cobra and Blackhawk models could be recolored to Grey? I'm not sure how much work that would take.
I only ask because the AH-1 SuperCobra and SeaCobra are Grey in color (due to being at Sea) - and the SH-60 version of the H-60 (SeaHawk) is grey as well for being out to sea. It would really add some diversity to my units, as I can have one for land and one for sea.
If it's too involved to change that around don't worry about it, fantastic job!!!

Cobra skin should be fairly straightforward so I may do a variant if I have time. The Black Hawk will be a bit tougher - the .dds file is an absolute mess because of the way I unwrapped it so no promises there. To be honest, I normally do fantasy units; I decided to do these because I wanted to experiment with bone assignments (and with much success, I might add). I will wrap it up with the stealth destroyer but then it is back to my genre :)

Would anyone be interested in doing a Dalek? I have the model, just not got a clue on how to convert it for use in Civ.

Does it have animations? If not, what animations in CiV would it mimic? Doing rigs of existing units is pretty easy, but if it requires custom animations it will be a lot of work.

It does not have animations, unfortunately. The actual laser ray could be 'close enough'ed with the Xcom squad ray, but actual movement could be a problem. How does one create custom animations, exactly?

Yeah, all you'd really need would be to have it turn towards the target and shoot. Maybe some sort of hovering, but that wouldn't be necessary per se.

I believe hovering can br accomplished just by moving the model up on the axis. I know the Gunship mod, for example, appears in blender high above the origin. Do if you just raise the model above the origin it may float.

I wonder if the Tank animations would work? You'd have to modify the,.fxsxml files to change the effects, but you're already doing that. But linking the model to the turret vertex group(s) could accomplish the animations you'd want?

EDIT: Never mind, that's quite a good idea! The turret would turn pretty much just like the middle of a dalek. Could I just replace the tank effect with the Xcom laser (albeit recolored)?

A) yes, you could have them fire an xcom laser - I'm currently working on some robot infantry models that do the same thing.

B) however, I'm not sure if you can recolor the effect. I really wish we could import effects from Beyond Earth... :(

You may be able to use tank animations; effects are based on bone position, not mesh. The animation will deform regardless of whether there is mesh attached to it or not, so any tank bone to which you do not assign vertices will operate unseen. So, it sounds like you could assign the Dalek lower body to the tank main body and its upper body to the turret (but not the barrel). Create a new bone on each hand as projectile points and use the XCOM plasma as the effect for the respective event codes in lieu of the tank's for the Dalek .ftsxml file. I think it could be done and still look decent.

Nomad, would it be possible to get some instructions on how to add a new bone to a model like you describe? My Robot Infantry model has two gun-arms, but since I don't know how to modify the bones on the tank armature yet its firing the laser from the torso (I.e. the current tank gun bone). It's workable for the time being, but would be nicer if I knew how to make bones for the arms to use...

So as not to hijack this thread with a tutorial, I have responded to your request on my tutorial thread here.

Nomad, thanks for what you have done! If you do get an inkling to switch the colors over to grey, that would help tremendously, but you have done a fantastic job!!

Hmmm, now I'm curious which destroyer you're converting -- I converted one for my own mod, but yours will probably turn out better so I may have to use it instead. :3

We asked Nomad to convert the Zumwalt class destroyer art from Civ IV.

Yep, it is in progress but I am having issues with some of its custom animations (linking them to proper effects). I can't use an existing CiV model because the gun turrets are in different locations. Hopefully I will have it by this weekend, maybe sooner.
