Has anyone mapped out the upgrade path yet for all applicable units? (I couldn't find it in the manual, Civilopedia or via thread search.)

As in,

(1) Warrior ---- Swordsman ---- Longswordsman ----- Infantry

(2) Catapult/Trebuchet ---- Cannon ---- Artillery ---- Rocket Artillery

(3) Archer ---- Crossbowman ---- ???? ---- ????

(4) Horseman ---- Lancer ? ---- Cavalry ---- ????

And so forth. (and maybe include, if known, standard/prince level upgrade costs)

All an-inclusive unit upgrade chart/list would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's:

Warrior --> Spearman --> Swordsman --> Longswordsman --> Rifleman --> Infantry --> Mech Infantry

Siege unit lines looks good.

Archer --> Crossbowman --> Rifleman --> etc.

Horseman --> Knight --> Cavalry. Unfortunately, Cavalry can't upgrade to gunships.

Everything should be in the civilopedia.

If you right click on a unit, you have displayed the upgrade that may become available to this unit.

If none is displayed, then that unit will be obsolete and remain in it's state for the very rest of it's life.

You're sure on spearman > swordsman? I've only gotten warrior > spear > pike > rifle.

I've always had the upgrade icon grayed out when I lacked civil service, but had the whole lower tree.

From my understanding.

no ruin

warrior-sword-longsword-rifle-infantry-mech

archer-crossbow-rifle-infantry-mech

spear-pike-rifle-infantry-mech

horseman-knight-cavalry

chariot-knight-cavalry

catapult-treb-cannon-artillery-rocket artillery

ruins

warrior-spear-pike-rifle-infantry-mech

scout-archer-crossbow-rifle-infantry-mech

others don't change with ruins I think.

o and for water : trieme-frigate-destroyer

most other units are stand-alone(lancer) or have a 2 unit path (most late era unit types)

You can't go spear -> sword.

You also can't go lancer -> cavalry. Lancer is off on it's own little unit planet. Not sure if you can up a horse or a knight to a lancer, but if you ever intend on taking them to cav, you wouldn't do it anyway. Whatever civ got a unique lancer got a raw deal IMO.

At least I couldn't do either of these things in multiple games, so I'm assuming they're true for others as well.

Also, was it just me or did caravel go straight to destroyer? Or did I double up (can you even do that) without realizing? (BTW, I know it's crazy, but wouldn't scout -> caravel make a ton of sense? Now that I can embark, let me put my scout in the water and upgrade so I don't have to have my pangs of remorse every time I delete the first thing I built in the game).

If you check in the Civilopedia under units, and click on the description for any specific unit, you'll see a link towards the bottom left to the unit that it will eventually upgrade into.

And the Lancer stands alone.

Destroyer can't upgrade to missile cruiser?

No, it seems that they can't, as Destroyers are (effectively) the most-modern unit at their role (sub-hunting + scouting)

That would be the Ottomans. And their Sipahis are better than one might expect. They have 5 move (faster than Mechanised Infantry and Modern Armor), +1 sight, and can pillage tile improvements without using up any movement. They remain useful as scouts and raiders pretty much until the end of the game.

I need to try Ottos one of these days. Archipelago viking-style game, never hurting a barb village and see how many galleys I can squeeze out of it.

They upgrade to Caravels, don't they? That would make for quite some exploration bomb after Navigation.

Triremes upgrade to Frigates. You'd make more of a naval domination bomb than a naval exploration bomb. Which is still good.

You may want to go for Honor->Discipline->Military Caste->Professional Army for easier gathering and cheaper upgrades, then go for Commerce->Naval Tradition to give them better movement and viewing range. If you manage to get a 7th social policy Merchant Navy would be a great boost to all coastal cities.

Where the eff is the polish on this game?

lol, for a second there I thought you were complaining about the absence of Poland.

I, obviously, haven't played as Ottomans yet or I might know that. Still, if your unique is a lancer, I'd hope Sipahi's could upgrade to Cavs if the player desired even if Lancers don't. It's nice you can find a use for them in your army outside any lancer advantage window, but the best part of uniques is taking their advantages and promotions into the future units, it makes it almost like a leader trait rather than just a UU.
