Hey everybody

Some of you may know me from the FfH forums. I've decided to undertake an ambitious mod for civ based on a sci-fi D&D campaign I ran a long time ago (when 3rd ed first appeared: to make up for a lack of spelljammer :p).

This project will start as a modmod for final frontier as many of the mechanics are already there. It may stay like this or use its own mechanics. We'll have to see :)

Note that this is literally in the starting development stage. Mainly concepts at the moment.

I plan to re-introduce specialists (used system-wide, with certain buildings allowing for specialist population as well as others enabling a specialist of a certain type to provide more options than citizens).

I have not developed specific unit stats or exact promotion details yet. Work is beginning on civics and religions. I am all open to suggestions from the community!

Presently there are a few ship categories I plan to implement: capital ships, recon ships, defense ships, squadrons and space wildlife.
I did not include missiles as I don't consider these units (they would be stocked and fired in large numbers from ships). Special missiles later will probably have the squadron classification or none at all.

Also bear in mind that construction options at the beginning of the game with no tech requirements include:-
Scout ship (basic recon ship)
Colony ship (obvious :p)

I will be constantly updating this page (especially seeing as I am in concept design stage), so updates will be regular. Please feel free to post any ideas or suggestions you may have :)

Spoiler Civs so far (haven't written all of these up yet) :

The Belvian Union

The Belvians are a diplomatic and patriotic group of humans, who claim that their home system, Belvia, is the source of all human life throughout the galaxy. Responsible for the formation of GAULE (the Galactic Alliance for the Unification of Like-minded Entities), The Belvians are what most galactic denizens view as the stereotypical human, and their culture permeates heavily throughout the galaxy.

Focus: Culture/influence, trade and diplomacy. GAULE is an intended UN wonder for the game. Maybe the Belvians would have a bonus to its production or an extra vote from unique units or as a civ?

The Holy Empire of Scarthia (for anyone who is wondering, yes this copied from the Scarthian civilisation in my fantasy works. I like the name Scarthia: any alternative suggestions would be very welcome :))

The Scarthians are a proud and aggressive group of humans, united through a desire to subvert and dominate the galaxy through subtle and forceful means. They continuously protest that Belvia uses propaganda and lies to legitimise itself as the centre of human culture. They claim that human life originated on Scarthia and that humans were once a superior race of psychic beings. Convinced of their superiority, they intend to reawaken this talent and show the galaxy the true power of human-kind.

Focus: Espionage and heavily psi focussed, good military

The Phelwaan

The Phelwaa are an unusual group of humans that obsess over the fair treatment and good health of all life. They despise conflict and war, focussing on philosophy and arts and the preservation of life in all its forms. Most of their planets are beautiful to behold, though the Phelwaa are picky about the areas that outsiders may tread for fear of damage to their precious habitats. Citizenship for outsiders is likewise very difficult, requiring a multitude of tests and screens to determine if an individual is appropriate for integration into Phelwaan society.

Focus: Pacifism, health and defence

The Latesshii Conglomerate

The Latesshii were formed from nomadic space-faring humans in the early days of galactic exploration. Although they settled in a “home system”, this acted merely as a base of operations to extend further into the galaxy. The Latesshii continued to expand at an alarming rate compared to other civilisations, moving vast distances in large convoys to colonise planets all over the galaxy. They have garnered acceptance from other races due to their mechanical expertise and willingness to fix ships and offer aid throughout their expansive territories. For this reason, they have been allowed to expand in pockets close to rival territories without hostilities or serious border disputes.

Focus: Reduced maintenance for distances, reduced upgrade costs and civic upkeep, increased repair rates (for ALL non-enemy ships in their territory), reduced border tensions

The Te’lesh

The Te’lesh are an old and beautiful race of humanoids, responsible for mapping a good portion of the galaxy and developing key space-faring technologies while the other races were barely realising their potential. They stand taller than a human with a slightly thinner build and no hair other than eyelashes, but bear an obvious resemblance to humans both physiologically and reproductively. Known for their efficient propulsion techniques, the Te’lesh are able to traverse distances faster and with less fuel consumption than other races, and they jealously guard their secrets for fear of them being utilised against them. Of all the species in the galaxy, the Te’lesh find humans the most curious due to their varied but brash nature. They are amazed that a race with such short life spans can accomplish so much during their brief existence in the cosmos.

Focus: Exploration and research

The Szel’raa Matriarchy

The Szel’raa are an exotic humanoid race, resembling smaller humans with plush, lacy wings, large eyes, pronounced canines and sharp claws (only on their hands, not their feet). They are beautiful predatory creatures with little compassion or love for other races. Their dark natures are reflected in a nocturnal sleeping pattern and a worrying talent for deception and intrigue. Many races fear the Szel’raa for their ruthlessness and knack for developing stealth technology. Many travellers into Szel’raa territory are never heard from again, although the Szel’raa never accept responsibility for these losses. Their society is matriarchal in most regions of Szel’raa space, and females produce a special silk that can be used to weave clothing and exotic products. In its natural form this silk is highly adhesive and was traditionally used to form webs for the capture of prey, until the Szel’raa developed techniques for its processing and utilisation.

Focus: Stealth, espionage, powerful recon/raiding (also maybe a special silk resource and some HN mechanic)

The Zha’khae’zeknea (pronounced Zar-kh-eye-zek-nee)

Easily the most feared race in the galaxy, the Zha’khae’zeknea are most commonly referred to as demons due to their partial resemblance to the same creatures from human mythology. They are extra-dimensional beings, thought to be the spearhead of a much larger vanguard sent to conquer this dimension of space. There is no current knowledge on the true extent of Zha’khae’zeknea forces outside of the galaxy, or of the number of dimensions that these creatures can access. Thankfully, it seems that connection to their dimension is tenuous at best. The Zha’khae’zeknea must maintain links to their realm of origin using large supergates that only periodically form stable connections to allow for an influx of ships. Also, those which have already passed from their realm have had to learn how to utilise materials from this realm and integrate it into their technology.

Focus: Superior military and gate mechanic similar to the FfH planar gates, lack of standard diplomacy

SMALL UPDATE: INITIAL TECH TREE DRAFT COMPLETED; Help with refinement would be much appreciated :)

Thanks all :D

Al

It's actually possible to create unique wonders similar to unique buildings. You might want to include this in the game.

What do you mean? Do you mean like unique features like those from FfH? Remnents of Patria for example?

Al

I can join if you want; i'm only good at making 3d models, though :)

You are more than welcome :)

I can only do concept design and python programming. Even then I need to get used to programming python in a civ-based environment. It is all concepts at the moment, but 3d models would be awesome seeing as they will definately be needed at some stage :)

Feel free to throw around any ideas you might have too... I'm still writing up race descriptions and expanding the tech tree. The tech tree itself will need a lot of balance work as I've just been throwing stuff together atm. Seems OK so far though :p :)

Thanks for the help offer! You have my msn already if I recall :) I'll chat to you there too when I sign in!

Al

Thanks!

However, i have no idea how to import my models to civ... Sees i have some reading to do. ;)

Wish I could help... I'm new to all of this too. I work well in the deep end though ;)

I haven't played FfH except the Age of Ice scenario (just downloaded FfH itself, actually) so I wouldn't know. You can make a buildingclass for a wonder with no default building and then allow a civ to construct the building like you would set up a UB. You would need a separate buildingclass for each civ to preven one civ from locking the other civs out of their wonders (unless you want to do that).

Ahh so you are suggesting making wonders specific to civs? Unless I'm not following you right :s :)

Al

Some of them at least. It would solve the problem of the Belvan Union and GAULE, and the other civs should have them too for balance purposes.

Ahh makes sense. I should think on this. Only just finished designing the fourth tier for my tech tree. I'll think on a special wonder for each civ. GAULE wouldn't necesserily HAVE to be built by the Belvian Union. It's just a favoured wonder if you see what I mean.

I like how civ allows you to form your own empires/kingdoms and the game plays out differently each time. In your game it might be the Scarthians who build GAULE. Now wouldn't that make them happy lol :D

Here are some of my ideas for starship customization:

Seeing as all of the promotions in the original final frontier were basically upgrades to a ship I decided to expand on this. I would add some new ways to get experience. The first way would be to purchase it with credits. This would be very similar to the system used in broken star. The second way is to build some “upgrade modules” and have them be consumed to give the unit exp, heal it, or create a missile. With later techs you can create ones that give greater amounts of experience, healing and produce more/better missiles, and cost less than they would at the rate of exchange for the cheaper ones. Construction ships could also carry these to give them to star bases or to follow your stack around in enemy territory. Star bases could also have promotions that create unattackable units on the tile, which can increase the star base’s abilities. I would like some that do each of the following:
Produce missiles
Hold missiles
Hold aircraft
Use ranged attacks
Conduct recon missions
Intercept aircraft
Receive 1 unit per turn from airlift (is this possible?)
Heal units

Each of these could also be customized to increase their powers, and makes the player choose whether they should spend to create a new unit or just upgrade their existing ones

I'll post some more ideas Here are some of my ideas for starship customization:

Heal units

Each of these could also be customized to increase their powers, and makes the player choose whether they should spend to create a new unit or just upgrade their existing ones.

I'll post mose more ideas tomorrow.

Cool ideas. I was originally thinking of reverting the promotion system back to normal (to refect the experience of crews). Although I was thinking along the same lines as you whereby ships can be "upgraded" with credits using upgrades made available through certain techs. I've only skimmed through your lists because I'm about to sleep here.

If you look at my tech tree you'll see some examples of purchasable "upgrades" such as the jumpdrive. Do you have msn? PM me so that we can discuss ideas in real time :)

Thanks for the input Kenken! :)

You could also have it set up so that you can spend credits to purchase/hire a better crew, and the crew promotions work like Channeling promotions in FfH, you gain XP slowly over time. XP would then reflect the crew learning how to work together, or spending time improving the ship.

Honestly doesn't make too much sense to gain most of your XP from battle in a space setting IMO, unless you are dealing with dog-fights mostly.

Hmm to have "channeling-like" promotions could work really well. I think battle should also award XP as usual (the command crew would get better; the gunners etc).

What different kinds of crews would you suggest? Also where do you think these could fit into the tech tree I've pulled up so far? :)

The Deranarii Empire

The Deranarii are a race of insectoid life forms, that roughly look like preying mantises. however unlike humans and most other galactic life, they are composed of silicon rather than carbon, and their hard exoskeletons glisten like green quartz. they are a very alien race, speaking in clicks and through some higher form of communication beyond the comprehension of humans. it has been theorised that they have a hive-mind in control of all the individuals through some telekinetic link.

The Deranarii have developed biological and space faring technologies like no other race, and have discovered how to build living ships, out of the highly abundant quartz on their home planet, and then by inserting the consiousness of a single Deranarii individual into the structure.

Focus: Heavilly psy oriented from the begining. do not use food to build anything, utilises hammers (or whatever the equivilent is) for population growth, get additional hammer granting buildings ratehr than food granting buildings. also ignores health. possibly increased heal rate of ships (due to them being alive)

something what the Deranarii could look like

The Veriaroul Conglomerate

havent really though these guys through, but im thinking some form of inteligent plant life, possibly humanoid. could go down either a 'good' or evil path depending on which of my ideas i feel like developing.

are you accepting ideas for other civilizations? i have a couple floating around... and is there a limit on how many civs you want eventually?

Cool ideas :)

I am accepting ideas on civs.

My list is NOT complete yet, and I have several civs I still need to write up myself. I've been working on the tech tree more than anything at the moment so that I can see where I can go with this!

I like the Deranarii, although I'm not sure how to implement the whole biological ship idea (seeing as I've already put in biological components for ships and "The Womb" wonder).

I will be around later tonight after I've attended a meeting (should be back in around 3 hours). PM me your MSN if you want to chat about ideas in real time :)

Thanks Psychic_Llamas :)

Honestly couldn't say precisely where to fit it in at. Mostly just conjecture as I haven't had time to read any posts longer than ~100 words in the past week or so. And probably won't get much time for another month yet. But I still like to have ideas ;)

Hadn't thought about specific types of crews, but in that regard you could use the types of crews as the UnitCombat, rather than the ship classes. Might make for an interesting dynamic. Then you'd have all of your ships be of relatively equal statures, with the type of crew you maintain flavoring what type of promotions are available to you. Swing through a Space Station and swap out your crew for the appropriate amount of credits to rack up new promotions in a seperate field.

ie - Get a Scientific Missions Crew to gain better Sensor Upgrades and enhance your results with "Undeveloped Planets" (goody huts). Get a Deep Space Exploratory Crew to gain better engines and larger fuel capacity upgrades. Get a Military Ops team to enhance your formations and maneuverability upgrades...

Hrm... along the same lines: You could add some Invisibility Types to the game to seperate the Ship Classes. Each ship "Class" would have a set Invisibility type, and be able to see that same Invisibility type. This means that out on the field you are only able to see and interact with other ships of the same "class" as yourself. Somewhat sensible in this context too: While there isn't much that a fighter can do to damage a dreadnaught, there is little a dreadnaught can do to affect a fighter (speaking 1 on 1, a full battalion of fighters against a dreadnaught becomes more realistically interactive on each side).

The complication with the invisibility aspect would be capturing systems, but if you just make it so that only Dreadnaughts can capture a system, and they are able to interact with Starbases so that those can defend your systems as well.

The nice thing about this model is that you would be able to avoid the "spearman defeats tank" equivalent in the mod because in this case the spearman wouldn't SEE the tank.

well if you plan on taking the FFH tradition of putting in a bunch of easter eggs (and blatantly taking characters from other games [kael gets points for guybrush]) you should look up the star control series. i only played the second but it had a buch of diverse races as well as having a great plot and some of the funniest dialogue ever in a computer game.
