Urbi et Orbis - a PBEM game

I typically play monarch when I want some challenge... And I don't always win
But for a test game (i. e. first game with new civilisation) I play on one level lower, or even two, if I suppose that this civilization could be hard to play with

I didn't choose Bannor or Calabim for 2 reasons:
1. I like defensive playstyle
2. I wanted to try something "100% Orbis'ish"

And one other thing:
Count my voice against continents. I would prefer pangea...
Of course, I can live with continents if You choose them, but I HAVE NOT EVER PLAYED A SINGLE GAME other than pangea... it would be like playing two levels of difficulty higher against You...

And, If You decuide that we should play Erebus Continents, at least trow in a lot of mountain ranges

Jarrema: ErebusContinent is actually a single continent (at least at setup I always play), and Erebus is a single continent too, so it's ok. You probably missed the major discussion which was Natural Landscape vs Labirynth.

PPQ_Purple: I didn't choose Bannor and especially Calabim because their warmongering nature (crusade mechanics for Bannor, early strong axemen for Calabim and overpowered Vampires) pretty much force you to be agressive to use your race's potential. I like to use nation's potential to its maximum but I prefer a more peaceful playstyle.

Deon: I know, that on ErebusContinent mapscript an option exist that is called "cohesion" or something like that. And if You set cohesion to "low", then sometimes You will get more than one landmass. So, it is option that I'm against

So, everyone here (me included) is a peacefully builder...

And everyone here routinely plays at least 2 levels above what I can usually handle.
This is going to be fun.

PPQ - but are You winning almost 100% of time?
I win about 50-60% of time on monarch... but in "vanilla" FFH. In Orbis I believe that monarch would be too much for me

Honestly, I can not tell.

I did not play that many games.
To explain, I like large maps and many AI civs and I usually disable most of the non conquest victory conditions (Conquest, TOM, Domination, Hell) so my games tend to last really long. Think 30+ hours long. Huge map, 18 CIVs conquest.

But I was looking to up the difficulty from my usual level by at least 1. So I am happy that its up.

The thing that makes me worried is that all you people have more experience than I do.
I feel like an amateur starting up to play against the pros. But I am determined to win.
Or failing to do that to have lots of fun.

uchhh
I'm a real amateur...
It's my first PBEM game, and I believe 4th multiplayer (other 3 played with friends from my neigbourhood... so I do not know what to expect from all of You)
My games are almost opposite to Yours. I play mostly small or standard maps, standard speed, not too much AI's, and try to go to different types of victory. But I do not like conquest... and I win by conquest only in about one game out of ten.

I usually play vanilla at emperor, which is a challenge for me. But I've been getting hooked on Orbis lately. Since it's so different, I've been playing monarch. I just thought having multiple continents would be a good chance to actually have meaningful naval units. I think that would add something significant to the experience. For me, it's more about having a different experience than it is about winning.

All that being as it may, I'm looking forward to our game. I think most of us have voiced our opinions on the options. Maybe Old Lion can go from there, fill in whatever other options are left and we can start soon. Who knows, it may be quite some time until 1.0b is released? I think we should press on!

Oh , I forgot to say that Monarch on Orbis is insane. It's either AI cheats too much or uses every possibility to maximize its gain, working around bad rounding civ4 method or something like this, but Orbis "Prince" feels like vanilla "Emperor" or even "Immortal". We tried Monarch with my friend once and AI built all wonders and got most religion holy cities and was researching very fast while having huge stacks of doom which we couldn't afford due to unit maintaince.

DAO IS TAKEN BY ME...
Three times or something like that (i. e. post 44)

For some reason this information is not included in thefirst post

Problem with Dao is, that ATM their worldspell is completly broken

first post updated. Check whether you agree.

Deon, I don't know your playing hours, so I placed you by default where I think a russian player would fit in terms of play time, but feel free to ask for a change.

In terms of difficulties, There will be only one AI, and it will be Elohim. So I don't think it is such an issue. (Barbars a little bit harder, that's all)

I have some experience with Civ4, but I never played against humans. so I probably have bad habit based on my exploiting AI weaknesses.

Since patch B is announced for this week end, and we have a Dao player, we'll wait for the patch.

In terms of map : I'll make some tries, but I won't be able to check the map we'll effectively be playing with (locked assets). Only in case of incredibly, totally crappy, unplayble start of one player would we restart. We will not restart after end of turn one, so beware of barbs !

I play around 19 GMT, maybe an hour earlier or later.

Also it's easy to make 3-4 warriors in Orbis because from the beginning warriors are built with food. Just don't forget to do it. Because trolls (str 4) and Hill Giants (str 7) will enter your borders and capture your cities from the start. So make sure you have 3-4 warriors in your capital before you grow to size 2.

I'll make some tries, but I won't be able to check the map we'll effectively be playing with (locked assets).

What do you mean by "locked assets"? This option (lock modified assets) works for single player only (as far as I know). Or does it work for PBEM too?

Ah!
I thought it generated a random administrator key making it impossible to peek at the map or to modify it.
I don't see the use of that for single player ? I never cheat but I'm alone with my game, so what's the use ?

When in multiplayer, I like the fact it helps prevent any accusations of cheating.
I never used that option, and don't have the game installed at the computer I'm currently using, so I can't check.

Well, it says in the description "single player only", but PBEM may be considered single player for each turn, right? I'd suggest you to try it as an administrator and tell us results, if it works it will be very helpful.

Jarrema, I think you are going to have fun with the Dao. I'm playing a solo game right now with them and it's turn 129. My capital has generated 8 elementals so far.

Six neutral and one evil leader. Kinda boring :(
Always thought there are too many neutral leaders, this game demonstrates that quite good.

Are the barbarians really that strong?
Becouse I am not used to having too many of them.
That is one part of why I like mountains and crowded maps.
I dislike having to stack cities with hordes of troops and I newer escort my workers.
