I was wondering about people's user names. What does your user name mean? I chose mine as an homage to my favourite standard unit in Civ IV. (Although recently, I've been coming to love cuirassiers, but "Cuirassin' Joe" would have been pretty lame...)

I'm posting this here, since its the sub-forum I spend almost all my time on this site on.

Interesting topic. Some handles seem obvious here but many others are a mystery.

I took "lymond" from a absolutely fantastic, if a bit obscure, series of historical fiction by the late Scottish author Dorothy Dunnett called "The Lymond Chronicles". If you like to read - with a dash of history - I highly recommend trying the first book in the series "The Game of Kings". You will not be sorry and don't be scared off by the language - the series as a companion book to help.

Mine is a tip o' the hat to one of my favorite Ren and Stimpy episodes. :)

The Flying Swan is the name of the pub in which my favorite fictional books are based around by Robert Rankin,If you get chance read the Antipope its hilarious.
After a book signing in Birmingham many years ago Mr Rankin got some inspiration from me and my friends and included us in one of his books as the the hippies who descend on Brentford for a festival after we told him we were going to London to find the real Flying Swan pub.

Mine is descriptive. Years ago my son greeted me with "Hi, Bushface!" and I reprimanded him, mock-seriously, saying "Is that any way to greet your revered parent?". He came back with "Sorry - dear Bushface" and the nickname stuck, though over the years it has shrunk to simply "Bush". And yes, I have a rather splendid beard.

Mine is actually a title, "The Ancestral Hamster of the Hantei" and is a game joke that only applies to the early editions of the Legend of the 5 Rings CCG. The Hantei dynasty was on its last legs and the current Emperor dying without an heir, so the Great Clans were involved in a succession war. In the game one could use the Imperial Favor to put various powerful "X of the Hantei" cards in play. This showed that the Emperor favored your cause enough to give (for example) his family katana to your candidate for the throne. The joke is that I was the Imperial pet hamster and so one would have to call in major favors to bring me into play, with no real benefit. (It's a hamster, c'mon!) When I was still active on the L5R borads, most posters would play along with the joke and address posts to me with overly-elaborate greetings and I would reply in kind.

@Riflin' Joe: Is your current avatar of a greenjacket of the 95th Rifles? Perhaps a 25mm Napolonic miniature?

I used to go by "Army NCO Guy" in the long long ago. When I first start putzing around forums and blogs I was trying to think of a way to describe myself. "Hrmm... I'm in the Army... uhh... I'm an NCO... erm... and I'm a guy. Yup, that's about it." As I was getting ready to get out of the Army, I realized I didn't want people referring to me as "Army NCO Guy" as I morphed into a fat old civilian, but "Fat Old Civilian" just didn't have much of a ring to it.

So, in an attempt to be as contemptuous as possible to racism everywhere, I decided to flaunt the fact that my "white" (actually kinda pinkish-peach) self was married to a beautiful "black" (really more of a medium brown) woman, and we've created a gaggle of "mixed" (er... sorta tannish-khaki) kids. After lurking at some sites where people proudly call themselves "mulatto", I decided it wasn't a horribly racist thing to say, although its origin shows some typical European originality. Thus, "The Mulatto Maker" was unleashed upon the Intarwebz, and things just haven't been the same since.

I couldn't spell Artaxerxes, the last emperor of the ancient persion empire. I admit to being too lazy to change it.

 I never even noticed the "r" wasn't there.

@ a.hamster: errm... actually I have no idea... its just a random pic I pulled off the net. I would bow to your superior knowledge, but i'd probably do my back in, bending down to one as diminutive as your cricetine self.

'Cause I wanted a military title, and my first name is somewhat similar to 'Olaf'.
Plus, my avatar etc. is to dowith my personal mod, in progress ATM. Vercingetorix has that trait combo in the mod. Also, he surrendered dramatically to Caesar.

 Yes, spare your back, sir! If we are to continue this conversation, if you could place me on that table it would make matters easier for both of us!

Then perhaps you might like to meet the 95th Rifles. They played an important part in the Peninsula and Waterloo campaigns.
1st of the 95th website

Also, author Bernard Cornwell writes historical fiction about a company of the 95th in his series Sharpe's Rifles. It was also made into a TV series in 1993.

There is a 95th Rifleman in the Downloads area, made by a member who maintains the greenjackets are the proper UU for England.

My username is a portmanteau of my two first names (guess what? :mischief:)

While my avatar is the freaky floating disembodied cartoon head from a Disney playhouse show called Special Agent Oso. :crazyeye: Personally I think that show is stupid, but my kids seem to think otherwise, so I can't complain - whatever makes them STFU is cool with me :D

Around 8 years ago (give or take 1) there was a commercial featuring a professional running back as a spoof. I forget the product or even the name of the character. He would routinely do things like fumble 4 times and blame his teammates for not recovering it. At some point, a reporter asked him "haven't you ever heard the phrase there's no I in team?". His response was "yeah well there ain't no we either". This is the origin of TMIT for me, although I've long wondered what it was for the competitor for the internet handle is out there. Someone beat me to the youtube account and xboxlive gamertag, forcing me to take up "TheMeLnTeam", although I usually leave the l lowercase.

It's not exactly a hard name to come up with given the expression that led to it, but that's my history. At first it was just another internet name among many for me, but 1000's of posts here and the youtube channel changed that for me. I'm largely stuck with it now, though I don't regret that as I rather like it.

I love this. I had always wondered where the name came from. I love the fact that you're being contemptuous. My hat is off to you, sir! :goodjob:

Sian was originally buttonsmashing (while playing RPGs and couldn't figure out a name) which stuck, because it looked nice (not much for blatant buttonsmashing)

My username was copied from my second username on a site about Television that had a wonderful Avatar community. The other shows were added for originality. The only reason I still have it at this point is that there is a long delay between a username change request and the actual change.

Ah, I was wondering about that, since you don't have a Naruto avatar.

When I saw your username the first time a while back, the first thing that came to mind was that commercial. Budweiser commercial that was part of a series with the same actor playing a fictional sports star in different sports - very appropriate at the time with all the primadonnas. Here's the vid:
