Yeah, that's very unfortunate that Zhukov and Rokossovsky were shot, they might do a good job in WW2.

That's the point...Zhukov was unstable as all hell but he wasn't shot, and Rokossovsky did do a good job but was almost killed...

Well, you can give Stalin license to miss a few; he was getting rid of some of those really bad dudes like Rokossovsky and Tukhachevsky.

If by "purged" you mean "made Polish Minister of National Defense," then yeah, he purged the hell of Rokossovsky.

EDIT: never mind, I should read all the way through the thread first

The most deplorable nation to live on the planet. Total disregard for individuals and human life. Stalin's purges alone are estimated to have killed 50-100 million people, add to that the meat shield that they used in WWI and WWII, the confiscation of crops to fund Stalin's industrial buildup, and complete disregard for safety (Chernobyl anybody). Glad it was the US that won out in the end, would be a dark scary world if that were not the case. Good bye and good riddance.

It's a somewhat dark and scary world now.

If you're going to criticize, try to be at least remotely truthful.

I love the USSR, but for vastly different reasons than most of its fans.

After WW2, the Soviet Union invaded my ancestral homeland and established a Communist regime. To escape Communism, my family fled to the United States. Because of the USSR, I was lucky enough to be born in America, the most powerful nation in the world, where I have been given an almost embarrassing amount of opportunity. If the USSR never did that, I would probably have been born in a small city in Eastern Europe.

Hey, this poster can obviously see Russia from her front porch - she must know what she talks about! :mischief:
She personally witnessed Stalin purging 100 million people? Good eyesight.

Although it is estimated that Stalin personally murdered 20 million schoolchildren, boiled their heads and ate them while their families watched. That's an historical fact, you know.

These numbers remind me of a joke:
During Great Patriotic War, people in small Russian town have gathered around a loudspeaker that announces of recent victories of Red Army and large enemy casualties.
"These are all lies," remarks an old man from the crowd. "Don't believe that."
Naturally, he is arrested on the spot and taken where necessary, to explain why he is engaged in hostile propaganda.
"Here," he says. "I have written down and added up all reported enemy casualties from the very beginning of the war. According to this, there is exactly 8 Germans still alive at this very moment."

If you're going to criticize, try to be at least remotely truthful.

He exaggerated Stalin's death toll by a factor of about 5, but correcting that and replacing WW1 for the Civil War, it is generally truthful.

Especially "The most deplorable nation to live on the planet" - for our nation. This is very true for anyone who knows history a bit :crazyeye:. Some people should at least read a few civilopedia topics about history first.

Quite frankly, under Stalin, it was probably the worst place on the planet.

Man, Solzhenitsyn was tortured and sent to a labor camp because he wrote very mild jokes about Stalin in a private letter that got aprehended. All he did was to ironically call him "the master" and say that things were not going good in the front (he was a soldier). So the court considered him guilty of anti-soviet propaganda and founding an hostile organization! Not even Nazi Germany was that screwed up.

if i'm not mistaken, i read hundreds of heer soldiers were either arrested or executed for making jokes about the führer, so, yeah, the nazis were that screwed up.

Ah, mea culpa. That's admirals that got executed to the last man. It was much rosier in other command positions. Only 4 of 5 marshals, 154 out of 186 division commanders, 13 of 15 army commanders , 16 of 16 army commissars, 50 of 57 army corps commanders and 25 of 28 army corps commissars were purged!

4% of total number of serving officers were repressed before WW2.

95% of army commanders lacked any reasonable combat experience. 80% of corps commanders similarly. Almost half regimental commanders. So on and so forth.

You got yourself the makings of a great army there!
Red Army was modernized with all haste before war against his will?

Yeah, totally. Like by the start of Operation Barbarossa the USSR had 1,500 T-34s! That's like, three times what Lithuania had!
