I wonder how these relations are going today?

The border issue was agreed upon in 1998 IIRC and Russia and China signed a 20-years strategic treaty in 2001 and they're both the member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (basically a loose economic/military cooperation pact, a sort of ASEAN for Central Asia).
