Van01 - A Newbie Hope

Playing tomorrow. I'll attack Pacal if I can get the forces in place.

Had a look at the save. Don't really understand Hippo's placement. If it had gone 1N of its current location it would have grabbed copper and a floodplain. Anyway, its there now.
While building up some cats maybe gather our axes together to take out the barb cities, pick up some xp and pocket money as well.
Don't think barb cities are ideally placed. There does seem to be a spot in the ice that picks up deer, crab and silver iirc which would be a viable city but that's probably not a priority.

Firstly, sorry for being late. (Again. :wallbash:)

Secondly, some MM grumbles.

Why was one of Carthage's floodplains farmed? There's no shortage of food there. It's been replaced with a cottage.

Why is Utica working cottages? Riverside cottages are very good for a financial civ, but some thought on city specialisation is always good. Utica has the potential to be our best production city. Working all the hills, it can reach over 20 base hammers, which isn't too shabby. The riverside grasslands should be farmed and the plains hills mined over the next couple turnsets.

And, to continue on Utica, why was a spear being built there? There aren't horses anywhere near Pacal, so I built a spy instead. We won't be able to make Mutal go into a revolt but they're wonderful recon units.

Switching to confucianism right away wasn't the best move. It's usually smart to observe the religion spread for a while before adopting a state religion. In this case it left us outsiders, what with all the other civs being hindu. I did what all the cool kids do and adopted hinduism. Relations improved nicely and I was able to trade with Cathy.

Monarchy allowed the switch to HR (which I did) and we can now hook up those wines. I suggest that our worker near Hadrumetum gets to it when he's done with the cottage he's building now.

And IW revealed that Hippo's placement isn't so shabby after all.

"Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good." (If you don't recognise that quote, feel ashamed and go read RB1-Cuban Isolationists pronto.)

Workers are ready to mine and road the íron. We'll be able to build swords soon, and we'll probably need them.

Pacal built the Oracle this round. First I thought it was fine. Rather wonders than troops. But then the message "Pacal has adopted vassalage" popped up.

Crapcrapcrap, he obviously took feudalism as the free tech. His capital isn't heavily defended yet, though.

Civ4ScreenShot0008.jpg

That's from the last turn of my set. We can still take him, but whipping some catapults and swords is in order, because we have to attack quickly to ensure that we won't be facing too many LBs. We have two cats now, with three more finishing soon. Also, I took the garrison axes from Carthage and Utica and put them in our stacks. Our fogbusting is good, so lightly defended backline cities aren't a problem.

On a note related to fogbusting: could the next player use the "sentry" command on our fogbusting chariots. That way, they wake up when an enemy unit comes near and can attack archers and axes for more xp and run away from anything stronger. I was going to do it myself but it slipped from the sieve that's my mind.

I researched currency and CS is currently underway. It'll take almost 30 turns but I think that it's the best choice right now.

SAVE for Vanor, IIRC.

Switching to confucianism right away wasn't the best move.

I did that. I normally adopt the religion that is founded by the Civ I'm playing. Now that I think about it, I'm not sure why exactly and being the same as most everyone else does make a whole lot more sense.

for Vanor, IIRC.

Pigswill is up next, and I'm after him.

Got it. Build units, attack Pacal, see what happens.

Keep Mutal (very holy city); raze Lakima (or whatever its called) nearest us. Let's go for annihilation.

An interesting turnset.

:smoke: but interesting....

It started off easily enough, gather units into a stack, build some cats and barracks.

Ok so far. Then this:

v1c40000.jpg

Then discover that a Guerilla2 longbow on a hilltop city with 40% defence has a defensive value of 15! Lose a couple of cats, numidian, couple of axes etc. But I eventually take it. Then raze it. (AI city placement still has room for improvement).

Complicate things a bit further:
vica0000.jpg

Send a scouting medic chariot into the path of a holkan  , the chariot doesn't win.

And end the set with a sort-of stack and an interesting option:
v1c80000.jpg

Iron is connected. No sign of any Russian units yet. Pacal's capital has got a CG2 LB, 60% defence (tho it ain't on a hill), could be interesting.

I got it and will play shortly. I think we have enough forces to take his capital but it will take the stack some time to get there so who knows what he might be able to build before we get there.

And I'm done and here's my report. Somehow it seems very fitting that with everything that went so well, not one of my screenshots worked :( I was hitting ctl-prtscrn not just print screen. So sorry but no images.

The short of it is, we take Mutal for the loss of only 1 cat and 1 Num Cav. We make peace with Cathy, lose a city but I get it back.

IHT – Checked everything and hit enter

T1 – We’re the most cultured civ in the world. Move the Num cav to pillage the copper with the hope that will stop any more axes from being built. Start moving a Axe to the copper to prevent it from being mined again. Winery finishes, move a worker to other vine to start another winery, road the winery to Carthage.

T2 – Num Cav -> Num Cav in Carthage. Move Num cav off copper a Holkan is moving to it and don’t like the odds of them vs cav.

T3 – We reach 1 million people. Chop forest near Carthage.

T4 – Longbow attacks our stack near Mutal and kills Cav.

T5 – Cat -> Axe in Utica. Barracks -> Axe in Hippo. Attack long bow with Axe and win.

T6 – Bombard Mutal, bring defenses down to 28% 2 axes move towards Hadrumetum, I attack with Num Cav hoping to stop them from attacking the city with only a warrior in it, it withdraws hurt.

T7 – Axes kill warrior and capture Hadrumetum... Carthage Num Cav -> Axe. Want to build up a few forces to take Hadrumetum back again. Bombard Mutal again defenses down to 0%. City has 1 long bow, 1 axe and 3 holkan.

T8 – Axe -> Axe in Carthage. Suicide cat at Mutal and it dies. Next three cat’s withdraw so that’s a nice bit of luck for us. Because sometimes it is better to be lucky then good... :) Do quite a bit of damage with the 4 cat’s everything in the city is less then 2 strength. Attack with Axe and kill LB. Axe kills Holkan. Num Cav kills Holkan. Chariot kills Holkan. Num Cav kills axe and Mutal is ours!! :goodjob: Install a new gov and we get the Great wall and Scotland Yard.

Start work on Courthouse wasn't sure what was best to start there. Move forces to take back Hadrumetum. Move worker toward marble to start a quarry on it but he never makes it. Move spy towards Mayapan to see what’s in the city. Currently 1 LB 1 axe.

T9 – Cathy moves a spear towards our border and I move the Chariot away to avoid him getting killed. Promote cat to CR2. Promote cat to Barrage 2. Leave stack in Mutal to heal.

T10 – We enter Medieval era with Civil Service. Can switch to Bureaucracy but don’t do that yet. Start researching Aesthetics due in 9. Second winery is finished move worker to build farm near Utica. Suicide cat on Hadrumetum. Axe kills axe. Num cav kills axe and Hadrumetum is ours again. :goodjob: Start a axe there.

T11 – Axe -> in Carthage, will need to move some of these east to block Cathy. I contact Cathy to see if she's interested in peace and she agrees, to peace for peace yay! Start cottage near Carthage. Move axe to Utica for garrison duty. Begin chop at Utica in prep for mine. Start farm near Utica. Fort chariot on marble.

T12 – Axe moves towards Mutal. Axe -> cat in Utica. Axe -> Sword in Hippo.

T13 - Joao II asks us for Horseback Riding for nothing. I say no. Axe -> Cat in Carthage. Mutal comes out of rebellion.

T14 – Stack in Mutal fully healed. I leave it in place for next person to continue the war. I'm thinking Mayapan could be our next target.

T15 – Move axe into Hippo, theres 2 axes, 1 arch and 1 warrior there now. I figured we could take the axes up towards Mayapan and attack with some of the forces from Mutal.

Worker 1S of Utica just finished chopping, can start a mine there or do something else with it. Farm built 1N of Utica. Aesthetes due in 2, borders of Mutal due to grow next turn.

Final tally of the war.

Losses 1 Cav, 1 Warrior, 2 Cats.

Killed 3 Holkan, 2 Long Bow, 3 Axe.

Roster:
1. Pigswill
2. Vanor - Just played
3. Splime - Up next
4. Dawn - On Deck
5. glenmetz
6. stuge

OK, I have the save, and will play tomorrow. (Or today, if you're lucky.)

Sounds like a good set :goodjob: .

I'd rather have a good set than a poor set with lots of screenshots  .

OK, I only played 10 turns, because we sort of have a critical game decision coming up.

The ACK! is because I didn't notice this before.

T215: Hit ENTER.

IBT: Joao offers Calendar and 40 gold for Currency, I say no.

T216: Pacal seems to be preparing a counter attack...

IBT: I guess not... instead, they're moving SE.

T217: Asthetics -> Feudalism (14)

IBT: Get OB w/ Cathy

T218: Nothing but battle prep.

T219: Mayapan is getting better defense, so I will wait a bit for reinforcements.

T220: Nada

T221: Just a note - all builds have been military related, I just haven't been listing completed ones here.

Also, we get this random event, and can't pay for the better result :( .

More Hindu cities = more $$$ when we get the next shrine up. The necessary Great Prophet will likely be in 10 turns.

T224: Nada

T225: Nada

So, I played 5 turns short, but I'm wondering: should we call it quits in the war? The Mayans have 4 longbowmen in the target city, and I'm not ready to take it. What should we do? (Also, this war has made us lose our status at the top of the scoreboard...)

The save: http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/59830/Prince_Vanor_AD-0775.CivBeyondSwordSave

BTW, I'm sorry about this, because now I realize that if I had been faster, we could have been more successful. I kind of suck at war...

Just looked at the save.

- Pull the chariots from fog-busting duty near Jute and Calakmul. Jao can fend for himself and we can save a few pennies by getting inside our border.
- Use the cav and axe from Mutal to snag the settler party nearby.
- Use the spy to cause the revolt on the next turn (so the cats have movement points). Then hit those Mayapan with the forces at hand. Delaying any longer will give him time to add another longbow.
- Then check on peace.

Also, I am leaving for a business trip in an hour or so. I'm hoping to have good internet access so I can play my turns from the laptop.

Technically, we play 15 I think (at least, Vanor did, so I assumed it was the norm) but I decided to stop short, since it was a fairly major decision.

It's Spl02 where it's 10 turns in war, I don't think it's the same here.

I'm going to need a pass as my internet connection at the hotel is really poor tonight. Took me almost 25 minutes to upload the files for Spl02.
If anyone else can grab this tonight or tomorrow that's fine. I won't be able to get back to until tomorrow night at the earliest.

@Splime - are we not playing 10 turns during war? I've got this and will play it tonight.

To be honest I didn't even think about that. I'm not sure what's normal, I've seen a few that do the 15 in peace and 10 in war, but I've also seen others that didn't. It doesn't mater to me much one way or the other actually. So if anyone has any preferences feel free to say so and we'll do it that way.
