A compulsive temple-builder, I finally built the Temple of Artemis. When it became obsolete I lost all my temples

Fortunately, my devout countenance also compelled me to build cathedrals in most of these cities. Those stayed. :D

I assume the temples are supposed to disappear, but wanted to check and make sure it wasn't a bug. How weird that an improvement would go away (or become obsolete) as my barracks from the Art of War wonder lasted all game.

Yup. When any wonder that generates improvements become obsolete, you lose the wonder-gained improvement.

Your SunTzu's Art of War never went obsolete. Nor the Pyramids, Hoover's Dam, or The Internet.

Which is why Temple of Artemis and The Oracle are not the best wonders to build, as they are only temporary remedies for your cities. Read some of the wonder articles in the War Academy and they tell you it's better to save those shields and actually build temples in the cities as they last forever.

I hate Temple of Artemis.. but if it's early enough use it only to spread my borders around more quickly.. and build it only if another wonder has been trumped.. for me, the benefit is a much more even handed influence/border movement, esepcially if cultural conversion is on.. but I don;t stand pat... If I end up with Artemis, I be darned sure I am ready for it's obselete-ness

One strategy I've seen people use to get a 100K culture win is to build the Temple of Artemis, cram as many cities onto the map as possible, and shut off al research before you get Education.

Temple of Artemis is pointless. It is one the most expensive Wonder in the Ancient Times and is even more expensive than the early Middle Ages Wonders. That the Temples vanish only gives me one more reason not to buildthe thing. The 4 culture is worthwhile, however it is not enough of a consolation.
