Venice discussion

Anyone know if the puppet citys of Venice are locked on gold focus like all the others? Because it would be quite annoying :)

Likely. To summarize from other posts why this isn't so bad for Venice:
- The MoV production will be useful until the nearby CSs have all been acquired
- The gold can be used to purchase in puppets
- Venice will already have a strong gold game (due to trade routes, etc), so they can focus on gold-enhancing things (big ben, mercantalism, etc); the gold produced by puppets helps with that.
- Venice is likely have their cities spread out a lot more than most. Even when taking the warmonger route (and especially if going the peaceful route), being able to pop a unit at a specific city the moment it is needed will be useful because of this.

I thought of something, seeing as the what used to be trade routes (which are now internal city connections), how is Venice going to deal with that? It's gonna be tough. Would there actually be ANY point in building city connections with Venice at all?

According to the interviews we've seen so far, early indications from those who have played Venice in the development team have made it clear that Venice is a fun civ to play, and that it has a lot going for it for those who can grasp its unique strengths and capitalize on them.

I think we will best appreciate Venice's real character after we have played the full BNW expansion. Prior to that, we can only make informed guesses, which may or may not be correct. There are so many fundamental changes to Civ V in this expansion and they make the game broader and deeper,so we need to play with them to fully grasp their implications.

We can talk all we like about Venice and the new civs, of course, but until we actually experience the expansion ourselves, we have no real context for our discussion, complaints and praise included.

I'd guess yes, such city connections will be important if they connect Venice to puppeted former CS's in the interior, because they will still serve to provide more gold and resources.

While this is all true and nobody here is questioning that logic to my knowledge. However, some of us are having trouble playing the game and would instead like to talk about the expansion and what it may be adding to the game to enhance the experience. What starts out as only talking and speculating could/would quickly turn into arguments based off the theories we thought up by looking at what we do know. After of which more time has passed and we are then closer to the release of BNW and of course, closer death as we have now aged a bit and wish that this aging process would speed up so that we could have less time on earth because we care so much about the release of this game. In fact, if your even reading this post at this point it says something about how you value your time as I'm sure by now you get the idea that I'm not really talking about anything at all. This is one of the few examples of the internet where a TLDR would be a smart thing to post as it would save you time and you wouldn't fall for my wall of text. If you did make it this far, let me award you with a bit of knowledge that might be of some use to you. By taking the time to read this post, you have also taking up some of the time that stood between you and the BNW release. Enjoy this post and smile as you of think how much closer you now are. I will leave you now in hopes that you will find something else to do with your day as I have things I could be doing. Currently my car isn't working, nothing is near me and I don't have the means of fixing it at this moment so I'm going to go play a game and write a few reports so that when BNW is released I will have less to worry about.

As a pure hypothetical, I'm curious about the following mod-related Venice situation. (I wasn't sure if this merited its own thread.) Say you're using In-Game Editor and playing as Venice. You give them a Settler. How does the game determine what to name that city, since it's technically supposed to be impossible?

Same way it names the cities with Huns, anytime a civ has run out of its city list, names of cities of civs in the game, then names of cities of civs Not in the game.
(not sure if that eventually extends to CS not in the game, but it is probably impossible to get more cities than that without crashing the game.)

It will be interesting what "Deity AI Venice" or "Advanced start Venice" get

They may have removed Settlers from the AI bonus altogether (and given them other bonuses)..since they reduced the happiness bonus, other bonuses may be reduced as well.
as for advanced start... not sure.

I figured it would be something like that; that makes the most sense.

Might it be possible to gain a merchant of Venice (with associated benefits) as a gift from city states through the patronage tree? I've had khans gifted to me from city states even though I wasn't playing as Mongolia.

For any city on the coast, harbors will be the answer. And you'll probably want those connections because it will add to what is already a potentially impressive cash flow. If you take Exploration, harbours are also worth +1 happiness.

that would be pretty fun.

CS: "Here's a gift."
Venice: "Thanx, now you're my puppet."

Why would you puppet the City-State that gave it to you? That just means you won't get any more out of them. Keep that one active for a continued supply.

Or they could give it a city list for this contingency (it would also address the situation where you have two versions of Venice).

Do you by chance have a seat in Congress? That's about $10 worth of mud in a $2 sack. :goodjob:

Making a city list for a Mediterranean civ based in Italy is never going to be a major effort. Most of us could thrash one out from memory in a matter of seconds. I expect there's one thrown in if only to allow for the unforeseen effects of modding.

Well the fact is that as of now Venice has only one city in the city list (I checked it in the xml files)

Shame. Easy fix, but not one I felt like doing myself. I'm also never sure how it would affect modding.

You aren't anymore likely to get another one from them than any other allied CS. Since they would already be at the CS, it makes perfect sense unless they are your only allied CS perhaps.

No need for more cities than one in a OCC-with-a-twist civ, surely?:p
