Venice discussion

There's some funny scenario that could happen with Venice and Sweden.

Dandolo: "Let's be friends!"
Adolphus: "No!"
Dandolo: "Aw... why?! Come on, let's be friends!"
Adolphus: "I said no! You're going to puppet my city states, you bastard!"
Dandolo: "But I just want to be your friend!"
Adolphus: "Yeah, like I don't know why you do!"

Merchant of Venice replaces Settler in the Liberty tree for Venice? That's sick, I honestly didn't expect them to be that generous.

I did. Since Venice explicitly can't get Settlers through any means, the alternative was to have Collective Rule just give them nothing. That would have been a big handicap and a strong disincentive to pursue Liberty at all. Collective Rule effectively gives any civ who chooses it a free city. The difference is, all the other civs get to decide where that city is going to be. Venice still has to pick from a limited number of already-occupied spots. I think giving them a Merchant of Venice for Collective Rule is logical and not overpowered at all.

Agreed.

I don't normally play with puppeted cities (I know, I'm not the best player...) and would like to know if the effect of having a road to the capital works the same as a "normal" city in the empire - especially for the pantheon that gives +2 science for every city connected to the capital. Could anyone please answer that?

Yes it does.

Venice doesn't have to puppet every CS it sees. If one goes for Diplo VC, one needs all the delegates it can have.

Biologist: Going by the Mongolia precedent, any Civ can be given Merchants of Venice by CSs with Patronage. (Also, that would mean that Venice could get non-MoV Great Merchants.)

Good point. That raises some interesting possibilities for other civs using the Patronage Tree. Nothing one could really plan a strategy around, but... interesting.

I can imagine myself camping my MoVs by city-states, just waiting for someone else to ally them, then BAM! No allies for you! I can also imagine this being extra fun with Austria. Let them ally the city state, wait four turns, then... BAM! Merchant of Venice, baby! Take THAT Ms. squeaky senior!

I didn't say it was overpowered, just that I didn't expect them to actually bother making this change; I fully expected Venice to simply get shafted when it came to Liberty. Very happy with this.

What about if someone has two versions of Venice in a single game? It would be nice to have Venetian cities rather than choosing from the bottom of other city lists.
I plan to play a game with only Venices. There will be absolutely no cities built, ever.

oops nvm then I saw the Venice gameplay video by Zac Minor and didn't see that option when he selected MoV.

It may have been pushed into the 'other options'

Oh, look! There it is! :D

Looking at that fort, I wonder what happens to Feitoras when Venice takes a city-state - I assume they get destroyed, but it might be funny if they actually stayed :p
