Venice vs Byzantine vs Ottomans

Venice vs Venice, huge continents map, no city states, both start landlocked.

Too easy...

Raging barbarians. OCC. No goodie huts or CS. Plains-dominant skirmish (no coast/rivers). Deity. (Optional: no social policies, religion, clearing encampments, or workers). No ragequitting, saving, or binge drinking. Go.

Aww, and just for a moment, somewhere, somehow, in the dim flicker of some far away star, there seemed to be a sliver of hope.

Ah, forgot about those Dromons. Byzantium will perform well in the sea early, assuming the Turks can't convert enough barbarian vessels. The dromons are nasty but if they are outnumbered 3:1, then the Turks will rule.

There very will be a decent chance of there being another Lepanto.

You know if the turks outnumbered the Byzantine dromons 3:1 is unfair, so the turks better bring more to even this up .

If I had to choose...Byzantium. Their unique military units will allow them to subdue their enemies quickly and establish themselves early. The Turks are their biggest threat, they need to put down before they can use their own UU en masse. Venice, well...if a moderate cataphract army will continually putting pressure on Venice and/or nearby city states than I don't perceive it to be that threatening.

Ottoman navy will just keep growing the longer the war goes on. And with 1/3 the upkeep cost for ships...
And as proven many times now, there is no way any other civ can keep up with that.

All goes swimmingly for byzantium until venice starts an Italian tradition of switching sides in the middle of war to sack constantinople

You guys should play EU4 when it comes out, then you can have the real Venice, Byz, Ottoman setup.;)

Knowing Paradox, Byz will win, Byz always win on paradox games. You can even reform them on their Victorian and Word War II games.
They will probably just beast the ottomans with their laser-shooting, unicorn riding, Cataphracts

Byzantium will crush the Venetians. All they have to do is mount a decent sized land attack, covered by dromons from the sea, and capture Venice itself. After that, they will only have puppet cities and will die. The Ottomans will be harder, but religion turns it in favor of Byzantium. So long as Byzantium strikes early, the other two won't stand a chance.

phaethon16, I would have done the exact same thing. A strong, early offense against Venice would see its downfall. As long as Byzantium can hold the line against the Turks during this time then they'll come out on top. Though I can definitely see the Turks taking a Byzantine city or two with their mass of triremes at the same time.
