I recently purchased a suit that has double venting on the jacket. I think this I the first jacket I've owned with double vents. I am very happy to have it, but I am also glad not all of my jackets have double vents.

What do you think of vents? I am told that the single vent is considered casual and the double vent more formal, but we live today in a world where, after receiving an invite specifying "semi-formal attire," one feels overdressed showing up to a blazer, chinos, and a polo shirt. Consequently I am a bit cautious of these traditional designations.

There also exists the non-vented jacket which can be considered either very fashion forward or absurdly impractical.

*The author would like to note that wearing a polo under a blazer is absurdly ludicrous.

It's honestly not something I've ever paid attention to.

EDIT: Upon further inspection, all my suit jackets have one vent (which is the "split in the middle), but my suede blazer has none.

Vents are slits in the jacket tail, so you can sit down more easily. I wasn't even aware that they made suit jackets without two vents.

Why don't You wear a nice classic jacket and forget about this godless one or two-vent thing-a-magic xD What's this vent anyway ? Seriously what's a vent ? :D

I see ! In that case I vote on single vent ! :)

Ah, thanks for the image and explanation. I imagine double vent is more convenient but comes with the consequence of looking silly when you're sitting against a chair that has a transparent back.

I've never heard of this before but now I'm looking and two looks way better than one.

I think double vents are ususally recommended as they will allow you to move more freely without your jacket bunching. Single vents are for a traditional American suit though.

Basically no one will care or notice unless you work in a place with an extremely conservative dress code, even then, probably not. A lot of the "rules" of menswear are completely made up.

Who's it going with?

I might ask later about how people feel about suspenders. This thread and that one would make a good couple.

If I post about French cuffs then they can have a threeway.

I was hoping my lame gag would be picked up on, but since we have progressed to carving up the thread I would like to clarify that I was merely venting and don't truly think the thread sucks.

Thread? There's a gag there too!
Yeah. I got it right away.

I did think this thread (ahem) was about letting off steam, and came all prepared to make a joke about clothing. Or even farting. Or something about whales?

I am disappointed.

How about three vents?

It's really not something I ever notice about anyone. Unless standing behind them in a lift.

Bring back slashed doublets, say I. To show off the whiteness of one's linen, you see.

That is what I thought this thread was about. I just never the the actual term for those slits. Another thought was this might have been a roof tops and those sorts of vents?

Are you trying to dress up the issue w/ off-the-cuff remarks here? Don't tie it up like that. I guess you can be given some slacks, if it suits you, just don't go skirting the issue too much. I know you may hem and haw, given that this is the tavern where we dart back and forth, but do it too much and I will have to belt you one.

Steady now. Don't get your knickers in a twist.

Spoiler :
"Dart"? Now you're getting technical.
