This is semi-Civ4 related, but I thought I'd get a more knowledgeable response here.

To quote CivRules' article:

The [updated] Minimum System Requirements for the game are: 1 GHz CPU, 256MB RAM, and a 32MB video card with hardware transform and lighting capabilities. The recommended Specifications are: 512MB of ram, Pentium4 processor, and a recent graphics card (like the Radeon 9800).

Will my video card be compatable with the above? Thanks for the help :)!

Here is my video card:

Your card meats will run the game but it's under the recomended level

Civ4 should run fine with that card, but you will have to use a low resolution (eg. 800x600) and low detail graphics.

Where can I find the video card info? I tried the Settings tab after going to Properties on my desktop, and hitting "Advanced", but I'm not sure if I'm looking in the right place.

Start menu > run > run "dxdiag"

You should be able to get to the same screen as Gogf from that.

Gogf: Should run "fine" on that... those specs for the needed video card for Civ4 are nearly identical to every other game being released, and that has been released recently.

A TNT2 will still run anything, AFAIK. (Though a software emulation program is needed for games with TnL - all new 3D games, and that sucks cpu power like crazy ;))

Why the low resolution? Somehow I can't fathom using 800x600 on this 1280x1024 screen :(.

Is there a way to upgrade just to video card, without the rest of the hardware? I know on my iBook I can't, but that is a Mac laptop, and this is a Dell desktop...

yes, you could buy another AGP card, such as GeForce 6200 or 6600.
FX 5200 is rather poor 3D accelerator.

I am guessing that the "MOBILITY RADEON 9000/9100 Series AGP" is also under recommended specifications? I tried researching it some, but had little luck. I am hoping that my video card is not so out of date that it is not even worth mentioning anymore, especially as I just purchased my computer.

Thanks ainwood. Are these ok for latest games (ie; Civ4 ;) )?

Yes... you won't be playing with any great speed or eye-candy, but that card is very similar in usability as Gogf's, albeit slower.

That fits under minimum specs, as it's not a very fast card, but it does support hardware TnL, so it should run fine.

are you sure that Geforce2 supports hardware T&L? I thought that wasn't implemented until Geforce4.

I'd say that Geforce2 is awfully old for the latest games, I had one until a year ago, and I could play most games only on the lowest possible resolution and detail-setting (and that was a year ago. And my card was the Pro-editon.

Quite sure. The Geforce4 MX line were basically speeded up Geforce 2 cards. Higher end Geforce3 cards were much better than all of the MX line cards.
That specific GF2 card actually has second generation TnL implemented IIRC.

That being said, you're right, it isn't a fast card, but Civ4 should work on it.
