It is not the Quake 1 engine. The engine is even older (not by more than a year, though).

The only true 3d-engine prior to quake is the engine used in Descent I & II, me thinks, but can I can't come up with a game

I know some engines prior to quake but I can't remember any games fitting the description.

I guess it could be the engine used in Tomb Raider since the texture distortions look a bit similar.

Tomme is correct, it is the Descent engine. The game in question was published by the same company that brought us Descent. It is also an AD&D game.

It is indeed! This stinker is in the same league of failures as Trespasser. Quite amazing that the same company that published all the Infinity Engine games, Descent and Fallout would let lose such a nightmare, but there you go.
