I drop question 3 on account of being too hard.
No there are no trolls and the red dots are apples, i think. The danger comes from the flower just north of the hero! It is actually a monster and will bite him, should he come too close.

I'm fairly sure it's Icewind Dale 2. Icewind Dale had a different GUI.
Edit: Or maybe not? Hmm hmm never really got into the Icewind Dale games.

Edit: He may be in HOMM 4 too, but I'm not sure about that

Homm3 then? I seem to recall his face, but don't know in which game i saw him.
If memory serves, the AI liked to use him a lot. Don't think i ever hired him myself.

He is a knight- hero from the Castle (human town).
The pic is from HOMM3, as Till suggested.
