Vikings III (Deity)

The world at 1465AD,
World1465AD2.jpg

I have had a bit of a change of heart on rushing for steam. Steam is extremely powerful, and will improve the economy no end, as well as providing a strategic railnet to protect our island holdings, but if the current progress is the best we can do, what is going to happen when we hit Babylon? And we better get there before infantry! So I am going to switch back to generating cash for a while, and build several more cavalry armies. On min science we are making 431gpt and we can cash rush an army for around 1500+ gold. So 6 turns or so of this will yield another couple of armies. We will review after that. We will also start building some more artillery (cannons). Obviously we are entering the time when they start becoming useful.

The other thing we will do is stir something up on the last remaining continent. At the moment, the Ottomans are roaming far and wide, and the Greeks are at war with us. The war is nothing but an irritation, but lets see if they can waste all their units throwing them at each other. It might bring the Babylonians in too, forcing them to commit to more wars, instead of accelerating research. Although quite frankly I am amazed that they can make much progress from 6 cities, but there you go.

We first build an embassy in Istanbul for 45 gold. I am relieved to see only spears defending there. For an alliance against the Greeks he wants iron and horses, but he will take iron. OK, done, although this probably means his defenders will become pikes, at least they won't be muskets!

The third cavalry army arrives at Inca.

IT - The Babs declare war on the Greeks. We love the king day celebrations occur widely. Cuzco brings ivory (the sixth lux) into our network. MAybe we need to try and keep it after all, because no other city brings ivory into the network without a cultural expansion! An Incan rifle enters the cultural borders of Cuzco.

1470AD - The first MI army takes 5hp to kill a vet rifle in grassland. It should have been attacking with attack strength of 7 with the military academy, so again I seem to be slightly short changed on the PRNG.

We cash rush an army. We start the advance on Corihuayrachina.

IT - An Incan longbow enters Cuzco space.

1475AD - The MI army kills the longbow and takes sanctuary in Cuzco. The eight cannons, three cavalry armies and two berserk armies will be in range to strike Corihuayrachina next turn.

IT - Russia joins the war against the Inca. First level war weariness kicks in.

1480AD - Siege of Corihuayrachina - Our canons get five hits, and it appears that there are only three defenders. We must finally be sapping the Incan strength. Perhaps this campaign can get some momentum soon. We then decide to let the slower moving berserk armies dispense with the three rifles, leaving the always present longbow. Our trusty elite sword steps up, and,
SMV1480AD.jpg

Just another reason to keep those obsolete elites around! Of course we form an army, and we will use cavalry from the force on Inca to fill this the fifth cavalry army. The city is razed to the ground. There will be no flips here, Mr Sapa.

We are able to advance four cavalry armies and three elite cavalry to the gates of the new capital. Unfortunately, I did not write the name down first and I can not read it with these units in front!

I quickly check with Sapa on the diplo screen. He is not ready to give me his other city for peace, or nationalism. He doesn't have steam. He does have economics, but won't give me that either. He will give me either music theory or Navigation. None of these offer me anything useful of course, even if nationalism was up for grabs. Nationalism is only useful if I expect to be defending a whole lot. I don't. So on with the war.

IT - The Greeks ask for peace - nope. The babs drop a settler off on Inca. This guy will hav eto be killed. The Babs complete JS Bachs. Great more culture. A new Incan rifle enters the borders of Cuzco.

1485AD - Siege of Tiwanaku - The first cav army goes first, but loses 9 hp on the first rifle. The second cavalry army loses 5 hp, so is sent in again. The third rifle was the last. Tiwanaku is captured.

We advance the remaining armies to Ollantaytambo, the last Incan city.

Siege of Ollantaytambo - The third cavalry army takes 4 hp on the first rifle, so goes again. Success, The fifth cavalry army advances, and kills the last rifle.

SMV1485AD.jpg

1485AD cont - One less civ to worry about, 4 left. Babs next I think. We cash rush another army. I don't care how many rifles Hamurabi has got, six cavalry armies and two berserk armies will surely have his measure! We send galleys to Viking Inca to collect the armies. We will hit minor Babylon first, then see if in peace we can pick up his island. If not on to the mainland, take two cities and then try for peace again. Remember, the Babs only have 6 cities at the moment. (Soon to be seven with the settler they sent to Viking Inca.

We try and block the Babylonian settler/rifle pair with three cav. Since they are on roads, this probably will not work, so we have a berserk army on the hill that they were probably aiming for.

IT - The Babs found a city anyway. It has no access to luxes however. We picked up our 7th native lux by taking the last Incan city. That means we now have 7 of the eight luxes natively. The only other lux is held by both the Ottomans and the Greeks. WLTK days break out basically everywhere. I guess war weariness just plummeted to zero as well.

The Greeks drop off an elite warrior by Aarhus.

1490AD - We use an elite MI to kill the Greek. The sixth cavalry army is formed and it boards a galleon. Transport arrives at Viking Inca to collect the cavalry armies.

IT - The Babs give us the boot from their new city. We will be back, mate!

1495AD - It is a two turn sail to Babylon minor and we are halfway there!

1500AD - We give the Babs the boot, but they comply. Oh well, we have no rep, anyway. We declare, and land our forces on Minor Babylon. We bomabard a Babylonian galleon with our frigates. Our first berserk army almost perishes destroying the one rifle in the new Babylonian city. It is auto razed. The Ottomans declare war on us. We bring the Russians in against the Babylonians for iron, saltpeter and theology. They don not even know the Ottomans.

We cash rush another army - to be the seventh cavalry army.

1505AD - Siege of Mari - The first and second cavalry armies each kill two rifles and the city is ours.

The other city is on a hill, so maybe it is worth waiting for reinforcements? We have two healthy and a half strength army that can hit the city now. If we wait then another fully healthy army arrives, the half strength will be stronger, and the other two armies can join in the fun. It makes a lot of sense, but nah, lets strike. The fifth cavalry army kills three rifles, taking the most hits from the third rifle. The fourth cavalry army had only one rifle to destroy. The city is razed. The Babs now have four cities, but we haven't even had the six turns necessary for the diplomats to talk! Onwards to Bablyon itself.

Hang on in there, YOu can still win it!!!

:D

Congrats! You deserve it!

1505AD cont - We are getting over 200 gold every time we take a Bab city. I may also have enough cavalry armies now. Cavalry by themselves should be enough to deal with the Greeks and the Ottomans, so we speed uop steam research. Not that we really need that tech now, either. It is just that I have a bunch of workers that need something to do!

IT - The Babs attack my city, Fukushima. There is only a berserk left. There is no need to keep the city, and I certainly do not want to let the babs capture one, so we choose to abandon the city.

1510AD - We attack a redlined Bab galleon with a vet fully healthy frigate, and of course we sink! The second frigate sends it to the depths though.

The seventh cavalry army is formed. I might take this army straight ot Greece, and start the demolition job there.

1515AD - Our privateer attacks an Ottoman caravel, sinks the caravel, promotes and furnishes a second privateer! Great there are too many foreign ships at sea at the moment. We need to clear the shipping ways.

We load our armies off Babylon minor and head for Babylon!

1520AD - On the south end of Babylon, by Izibia, we land 2 cavalry, 6 cavalry armies, a berserk army and a musket!

IT - An Ottoman galleon draws near east island, Viking New Territories. We do not have great defence there, so we could be in for a little bit of hurt.

1525AD - Remarkably, frigate bombardment of Izibia secures one hit on a rifle! Siege of Izibia - The second berserk army attacks first and loses 10 hp killing a rifle. The second cavalry army goes next and kills three rifles. It still has enough hp to go again, but there is now only a longbow showing, so we use an elite cavalry, and the city falls. We will keep the city for the moment. If for no other reason just to use the city cultural borders to save movepoints while we attack the Babylonian capital of Carchemish.

Siege of Carchemish - the third cavalry army takes 8hp on the first rifle. The fourth cavalry army claims two, but is redlined. The sixth cavalry army claims two rifles as well. The first cavalry army claims two and we are down to a longbow defender.
SMV1525AD.jpg

Smiths gives us a jump of almost 100gpt! I might keep this city. Now to the diplo screen. My plan is stressed. The capital has jumped to Telloh, the one city island (there is room to land on the island, but only if there are no units in the one other tile. I had better send the berserks, and hope that a berserk army preserves the amphibious attack.

We have so much gold from these two captures that we rush another army. We speed up steam so it is due in two.

IT - The Ottoman galleon drops off a longbow.

1530AD - We use a vet knight and get a promotion in the process. We unload the seventh cavalry army by Athens, the Greek capital. It is also just south of Babylon.

IT - The Greeks drop a longbow off on Sippur Island. The Ottomans declare war on the Russians. Steam comes in, research to Industrialisation, but now we will minimise it. We amke 520 gold per turn - ie an army rush every second or third turn, if we desire it.

1535AD - Siege of Larsa - Again we use enough cavalry armies to be safe, and then an elite cavalry to finish off the longbow.
SMV1535AD.jpg

Siege of Athens - Here we see only muskets! But after two muskets, the seventh cavalry army is down to 7hp, so we decide to back off and recover. Reinforcements are on their way.

1540AD - The eigth cavalry army is formed.

Wow, ur facing some tough defense from the Babylonians and ur getting some very nice wonders too. Bach and Smith are my fav's along with sistine

1540AD cont - A privateer passes close to the Ottomans, revealing that they are at rifles as well! So it will be a lsow slog through those guys also! What a nuisance. Hopefully the Greeks don't get there before they have been removed from contention.

IT - The babs come begging for peace - nope!

1545AD - Siege of Athens, part two - We now have 4 cavalry armies here, so this time it should happen per the script. There is only two more muskets there, so one army is able to dispatch them.. We keep the city for the cultural border intrusion to the next city. Probably give it the boot some time soon, though. We also pick up a greek trebuchet.

The next city, Delphi has the final lux, dyes. We press on. There are only three muskets, but because of the travel distance it takes two armies. Athens is then abandoned.

Greece has four cities left.

IT - Russia tries to give us the boot. We have had enough of two city state Russia, so we declare instead. The Russians land a musket and a longbow by pike defended Itse. If they capture Itse, we will bring our armies back.

1550AD - On Fukushima Island, there is now only the Russian capital, since we abandoned Fukushima. We kill two Babylonian rifles and a longbow, and a Russian musket.

In Greece it is a healing turn.

Stats:
Babylon 1 city (rifles)
Greece 4 cities
Russia 2 cities
Ottomans 5 cities (rifles)

IT - Russia captures Itse. Greece attempts to bring up a SOD for a counterattack - 2 longbows, 2 muskets and a trebuchet.

1555AD - We rush another army. We kill a Russian longbow on Fukushima island.

In Greece, we use one injured army to destroy the attackes, although it is redlined in the process. We then advance on the new capital, Corinth. Because of the distance, each army can only get one attack, and so it takes the remaining three armies to get take Corinth. We raze the useless city. We also land three more cavalry armies north of Themoplae.
SMV1555AD.jpg

The ninth cavalry army is formed.

IT - A Russian longbow beats a fortified in city musket to capture Shiruppak. Time to deal with the Russkies I think! And rifle/settler pairs of various nationalities are running around too!

1560AD - On East Island the Ottos have landed a rifle/longbow. Fortunately a galleon with a berserk army is near. The army kills the rifle. An elite knight kills the longbow.

Siege of Thermoplae - There were only two muskets, and one army ois equal to the task. The same army then kills an Ottoman rifle and a longbow. It seems all my enemies are now at peace with one another. This should make it more fun. A fresh army kills another Ottoman longbow, then a Greek musket, two longbows and a settler. The other armies continue smashing mix natioanlity units and otherwise advancing towards the Greek city of Berlin. It looks like the Germans were hopelessly hemmed in between two other civs, much like I was in my first run with the Vikings. Thermoplae is abandoned.

There is basically no spare unit to guard the city. I am only at just over 50% of territory (over 80% of people), so I don't really need to abandon all from avoiding the domination threshold point of view, but as we only have armies here, we can't waste one on guard duty!

On Fukushima Island, siege of Khabarovsk (Russian capital) - our cavalry army there makes quick work of two muskets and a spear to take the city. We might just keep it to replace the one we abandoned!

Meanwhile, we landed another cavalry army by Itse. The Russian reign there was mercifully brief!

On Viking Inca, we kill the latest Babylon rifle/settler pair with an MI army.

Stats:
Babylon 1 city (rifles)
Greece 2 cities
Russia 2 cities
Ottomans 5 cities (rifles)

1565AD - Siege of Berlin - Three muskets are dispensed with by two armies. For this city we have to cross a river before attacking the city, so the armies each only had two shots. The other armies basically just use the time to heal.

Siege of Orenburg (Russian) on Shiruppak Island - The first berserk army arrives by sea and kills the two muskets to take the city. The Russians are back down to one city.

1570AD - Siege of Hamburg - We run an army down to 2hp killing two muskets, then a second army kills the final longbow.
SMV1570AD.jpg

3 civs left! Berlin is abandoned. Again we don't have troops to waste looking after it.

We advance on Konigsberg (Ottoman).

We land a berserk army on the safe bit of land by Tellloh. Now we can wait for some cavalry armies and then destroy the Babs once and for all hahaha!

1575AD - We are at first level war weariness.

Russians -
SMV1575AD11.jpg

Goodbye Cathy. 2 civs to go!

Siege of Koningsberg (Ottoman) - An army is reduced to one hp killing the first rifle! We then kill a rifle and horror of horror, we suffer our first army loss to the third rifle! The rest goes according to the script and Koningsberg falls.

We advance on Leipzig. The remaining alien possessions:
SMV1575AD2.jpg

1575AD cont - One of our privateers sinks an Ottoman galleon.

1580AD - Leipzig falls to our two army double. We again lose a frigate to an Ottoman galleon, but a second frigate is successful in killing the thing.

1585AD - Siege of Bursa - Two cavalry armies kill three rifles between them, then a third cavalry army is retreated, but the remaining rifle has only 2 hp, so a 6hp army is sent in again and the city falls.

IT - Two Ottoman rifles enter the territory of Bursa. Also Two Babylonian galleons are attempting to make a run for it. Perhaps they know the game is up?

1590AD - We sink a Babylonian galleon, scoring a conus privateer. The bonus privateer sinks against the other Bab galleon, but a second privateer is able to finish that job!

We abandon Koningsberg.

1595AD - On the way to Istanbul was have to clear two rifles and a longbow, but inevitably,
SMV1595AD.jpg

We can not quite make it to Etrine this turn, so the Ottomans will see in the 17th century, but it will be their last!

We land a cavalry army at Telloh.

1600AD - Our territory is about 55%, so still very safe.

Telloh -

Etrine -

Now it is over. My first Deity win. Nice to go it in style. 55% of land, 100% of pop, and 7153 firaxis points.

:goodjob: Nice story!

My respects mate, on ur sistine-bach question: more happiness can´t hurt can it?
Great game, best of lucks.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

Great job! And a Conquest victory as well. :)

Now I believe it's time for Sid.
I don't think so! Maybe a Deity continents, or a huge emperor pangea for something a bit different (and easier). I'll leave SID alone until I am comfortable that I can regularly beat Deity.

Congrats! If yoiu were here i would pat you on the back. Maybe you should try bamspeedys beyond sid, eh?
