"Alex case; DNA is not matched; investigations and researh continues
June 6,2006
The guestions regarding the fate of the 11 year old Alex become ever more, as the breakthrough which everyone anticipated to be achieved in the laboratories of the criminal department in the end didnt happen, since the DNA tests had negative results.
Acording to the briefing by the laboratory os the department of Justice which was in charge, the genetic material from the cloth residue which the policemen collected in the collapsed house at Veroia is not compatible with the sample which Alex's mother provided.
Earlier it had been announced that its likeness was at 50%, womething which called for further testings, since, as the officials explain, in order to be lead to safe conclusions the likeness should be over 80%. Meanwhile, as has become known, up to the dawn of Thursday the grandfather of two of the juveniles who are considered to be suspects, testified, while testimony-giving by all other relatives of the five children is also continuing. At the same time the police carries on with its investigation in abandoned buildings and other locations in Veroia. (my note: they are searching for the body, which has not yet been found)
Investigations and testimonies
The men of the criminal service are continuing their investigations in several parts of Veroia. Indeed, early in the afternoon of Tuesday, they visited once again the house of young Alex.
The policemen took from the house some clothes of the boy, with the end of using them in comparative examinations, next to the findings which they already had in their hands.
In parallel to the investigations also the testimonies of witnesses are still being collected, mostly from the circle of the families of the five juveniles, many of which have been called by the police more than once. Besides, the secretary of Public Order has spoken about the posibility that also one of the adults in that circle might have played a part in this mysterious case.
Of great interest is one part of the testimony of the grandfather of two of the juveniles, fragments of which are being published in (name of a newspaper). Talking to the police officers, the grandather tried to explain the anti-social behaviour of the children, characteristically saying that "the kids truthfully are bursting with life. There are many reasons why they are so bursting. But things also have another side. They have been put to a difficult spot; they were made to be ashamed by some of their fellow pupils, when those fellow pupils were telling them: 'What are you to say, you who your father has abandoned, five children, and went abroad, to Germany?'. So the kids were getting into fights, and throwing themselves to the ground, wrestling. Later they would return to our house full of wounds. 'Do not pay any attention' i would be saying to them then, 'you should focus on how to become good people. Leave the others to say what they want to'"
But apart from the relatives of the five children, the police has also taken testomony from other witnesses, such as the woman who appears to have testified that she had seen the five children wheeling a small cart in the roads of Veroia.
According to information, another woman, who comes from the circle of friends of Alex's family, testified to the officers that in the night of the 11 year old's dissapearence she saw four of the five children running upset in the streems, and having blood on their clothes."
(end of the translation)
So this is an ongoing investigation, about the murder of Alex, an 11 year old Georgian boy, who was living in Greece. He has dissapeared, and it seems that he is probably dead, and that the murder has been commited by five of his classmates, who seemed to have been picking on him. This crime has again brought to light the serious issue of juvenile crime in Greece, which in this scale is a new phenomenon, triggered by the massive immigration of the last decade (over 1 million non-greeks came in this country, effectively making it multicultural in only a few years, and the lack of programming is showing).
Although teenage gangs are also a phenomenon which is being influenced by the image of other western societies, particulary of the Usa, and so they become part of the same hybrid 'frankolevantine' modern greek mass culture, it has to be noted that such gangs were not at all promiment in past years. Their formation is connected to the shock influx of non ethnic greeks in schools, something which although in my opinnion is a great hope for the future of this country (since any society that stays ethnically -even idealistically ethinically pure, since no one really can claim that he is trully pure- pure is bound to be infested with eternal pop subculturism of the worst kinds) nevertheless the way in which it happened has now caused a very real problem in school culture.
Already there exist many public schools where the majority, or a near majority, of the pupils are not of greek background, being the offspring of immigrants. Ghetto phenomena have appeared, and havent been dealt as they should.
The case of Alex, who was a very good student, and also a pianist, and probably has been killed by his fellow students, is just a more eyebrow-raising case, however below those momentarily raised eyebrows, and below the head where they had been for an instant raised, on the ground of the schoolyards of today in Greece, definately thousants feel intimidated by a school culture of division, which the arm of the Law could never trully re-organise with its fingers that are simply too obese for such a task, as that arm has been shaped for very different tasks, and so now it is moving anxiously above the schoolyard, and towards that equally useless to help with a solution raised eyebrow of an insensitive civilian.
