Vista error disalowing me to run game

I installed the game to my Vista Ultimate PC and I got an error from microsoft stating that this game has compatibility issues and to check with Fraxis games. I did so and nothing to help get my game running?

how can I play the game?

Specs:

AMD X2 2.6 GHZ
RAM 2GB
Nvidia 8800 GTOC 512 MB
Vista Ultimate

install patch 1.61 from here, then install 1.74 from here, and finally a directX update from here. That should do it.

Does this mean that with the patches mentioned that Civ iv will work with a 64-bit operating system? I'm in the market for a new computer and nearly all come with 64-bit Vista, so I'm trying to find out if my kids' games will work.

Welcome to CFC

Civ4 on Vista has had some problems - in almost all cases it runs on Vista 64 if three conditions are met:
1) the game is patched to 1.74 (the intermediate step to 1.61 is advisable for technical reasons)
2) DirectX is updated
(see links above)
3) all installers and patches are run with admin rights (i.e. right click on the installer [setup.exe on the disk] and the patches and choose run as administrator - relying on just using an administrator account does not necessarily work in Vista).
