Well, I voted chicken, but I could also argue for the egg.

The egg could be generalized as a pre-existing adaptation, but you can take that all the way back to 1-cells (as many did).

On the other hand, the multicellular animals procreated by celular division before developing the fancy gene exchange usually associated with an egg.

Just ask a farmer - you should get chickens first, then you'll get eggs for free!

The egg obviously!

I mean, who wants to eat chicken for breakfast? :D

Considering that chickens are essential in laying chicken eggs I'll go with chickens.

but the first chicken had to come from a mutant egg from a species related to the chicken.

Since the chicken evolved from reptiles;

The egg could be called a constant, while chickens can change.

Its the chicken get over it.............there is no such thing as a mutated egg, which turns into a chicken..........that is so weak.

so, if you believe in evolution but find that arguement weak (when it's the basis for evolution) how else do things evolve? Contuary to popular belief Pokemon evolution is not real

The chicken came first - a chicken is an actual chicken, and an egg is a potential chicken. Actuality always precedes potentiality, ergo, the chicken came before the egg.

Rather, a chicken is a potential egg, and an egg is an actual egg. Actually always precedes potentiality, ergo the egg came before the chicken :)

Sorry, but evolutionary speaking, it's not the chicken which reproduces via the egg, it's the egg that reproduces via the chicken.

Hey, don't shoot the messenger. I'm just arguing for Aristotle. :p

I remember something from Biology last year and that is Oparin. He was one fo the hypothesizers on how the earth was created. A graduate student, Stanley Miller, and his professor, Harold Urey, use Oparin's hypothesis as a starting point for their experiment.Their apparatus included the gases that were assumed to be on a young earth's atmosphere, as the gases circulated in the chamber, electodes substituting for lighting, supplied energy to drive chemical reactions..........and thus created organic compunds like amino acids, ATP and nucleotides that attach to DNA, which is found in all living things.................HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH...GOTCHA

VIVA LA CHICKEN..............as sickle says.......CONVERT TO CHICKEN DAMNIT!!!!!!!!

huh?

I'm leaning towards the egg now because the egg gets laid.

you still haven't answered my question above.

if you scroll up you'll see my question. It is in post #85.

And I was wondering the same thing. (Actually, I sort of already asked it, when talking about mutations.)

I am pretty sure somebody at cfc has taken Biology and that whenever the DNA splits and duplicates, because of the cells duplication process, is that when they copy themselves and the DNA polymerase binds the nucleotides together, there is the repair process that all DNA is put through. Now if it were not for this repair process then the ratio of mutations would be something like 1 out of every thousand human being. But because of this repair the odds of you getting cystic fibrosis have slimmed down to 1 in a billion. Basically, mutations are very rare, it is all about natural selection. If our genes were not put through this repair process we would all probaly in special ed. with Bush.:goodjob:
