I beelined it straight away as India, no go - Judaism was founded something like 9 turns before I finished monotheism. How'd you do it? (I was working all commerce tiles and Delhi was size 4-5)

The AIs randomly researching down a different tech path?

Good exploration? Note that AIs are more likely to try and piggyback off of existing research of other players (including you) that they meet if they meet other player early on and are more likely to beeline Religions if they meet fewer other players.

The Independent nation in charge of Jerusalem will beeline Judaism out of the starting gate.

Well, send a fast-moving unit to them, declare war, and stand on top of their Commerce-producing squares?

Use a warrior, it is the only thing that will get there in time i reckon.

I believe they get a research boost to monotheism... Jerusalem isn't exactly commerce-rich (it's actually an awful city spot).

Well, the very act of declaring war with a Warrior, as hoplitejoe is suggesting, might cause them to switch to working Hammer-based squares to respond with military might.

I think they start with three archers.

It's not like those Archers will be able to trek their way to your capital, so declaring war and staying out of range of the Archers could still work.

If you start as India you'll have a 50/50 chance for Judaism, China not so likely. It is possible to get all the religions as India

Ok, fine. Christianity is the most important for the major goal, but Judaism would be a nice bonus.
