Vox Populi Weekly Civ Challenge I - Khan You Dig It?

Definitely not the same thing at all. Most ideas for the improvement of VP are suggestions, so of course people are happy if you implement them, I mean I really doubt people were planning on making their own mods using those ideas in the first place.

This however was something that I said I was going to do and which I was completely capable of doing myself and you went "Too late! I stole the idea. :)".
In fact I would have already done it if I didn't feel awkward about setting up a new weekly challenge in the middle of the weak after I've already suggested Washington that week.

The entire "stole" thing also stops me from throwing up own thing up there without looking weird, even though your contest have absolutely nothing to do with the thing I was going for. It all just feels like really bad form and really unnecessary.

Goodness gracious this subforum is grumpy lately. I didn't set this up to steal anyone's thunder, nor did I know that you were actively planning on setting up your own challenges. The discussion was vague, yet people seemed excited, and it seemed worth setting up.

Ultimately, this kind of scenario can go two ways. Someone, like you, posits an idea, a suggestion, a concept. Others agree it would be cool. A few days pass, and I get a PM saying "Gazebo, did you see this? Are you going to do this? Still waiting for your response, come on!" I look at it and, if I'm okay with it, I do it. If not, I have to explain - in detail - why I don't like it. For days, weeks even. Some agree, but most probably disagree with me.

On the other hand, if I stumble upon something I think the community would like, and take initiative on it, I am condemned for 'stealing an idea' (one that I very clearly attributed, and - as you admit - wasn't even your idea in the first place) and/or I'm blamed for doing it all wrong.

Let's be clear: either way I lose. And, to be completely honest, I just really don't care. I did this without malice, without harmful intent, without any shred of a desire to take something from someone else. The spirit of this community is one of borrowed ideas and shared development. So, so many of the VP's concepts stemmed from suggestions that I may or may not attribute. Am I to assume that each of those users would have, had I not 'swooped in,' developed their project on their own? Am I to apologize for borrowing their ideas that they freely offered to the community? Do I need a works cited page for the VP?

Either way I lose, as here I am, defending my 'tyrannical' actions to some while others praise them.

I don't get paid enough to deal with this on every single thread.

Assuming good faith by other people would do wonders for the tone and interactions on this forum.

To get back on topic, did maybe 150 turns last night. Don't feel confident at all with a civ I haven't played, but am surviving, and doing reasonably okay in my standards. Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Sounds good. Mongolia's recent buff (the UA now applies to all mounted ranged units, through to helicopters) takes the early game pressure off of them a little bit. Unlike the Huns, for example.

The changes to flesh out a full ranged mounted line of units was one of the best ideas of recent times! Citation? :PPP
Will start a run tomorrow, got to admit I don't usually have vassalage on so we'll see how that goes - seems like it has a large effect on conquest.

You have excellent reasons to do what you did. That does not mean Funak does not deserve an apology.

This isn't about whether what you did made practical sense or seemed sensible from your perspective. As you have pointed out with your logic, both of those were true. That does not mean that you cannot *also* apologize to him for pulling the rug from under him now that it has happened. It costs you nothing to write the word "sorry" in your post.

If you want a community of not-crybabies here instead of the awful people you apparently think we are, then part of that is being a good community member yourself. Taking initiative is only the practical side of being a good community member (and leader).

I'm going to apologize over something that someone might or might not have done.

Also, don't put words in my mouth - I never said anyone was awful, nor did I call anyone a crybaby.

Drop it. This thread has been successfully derailed to the point that my initial post is now completely muddled.

OK, I failed miserably on my first try. :D Learned quite a bit though.

1. Competition isn't for me! Stress was eating through me - I kept thinking "Come on, go faster, the earlier we finish the more points we get" which pushed me into very stupid decisions;

2. standard speed is very different from epic. Military units obsoleting quicker means early rushes are significantly more difficult, for one. Works almost every time on epic, but I tested three times on standard and didn't go anywhere. The AI is progressing too quickly through walls/spearmen/mathematics;

3. tributing remains super difficult. I killed all the units of a city-state, stood nearby with 3 spearmen + 4 archers and wasn't even close to a light tribute. Like, a third of the way.

I think I'll go back to epic speed and not press myself regarding time. I'll report back with feedback without entering the contest.

I streamed my turns so far, and there is certainly much higher stress. But at the same time, I was invested in the game far more than normal. Usually I'm laid back, and don't care so much. I really care how this game turns out.

Yeah, I haven't been close to tributing anyone, and have given up on using the UA entirely due to that. I'm now at essentially a normal domination game.

But that's fine, nothing wrong with that. The Gers are really nice.

I'm doing culture blobbing, and it's fun, although my stream is filled with people telling me I shouldn't be going tradition, etc.

And I missed out on angor wat. But the Ger is doing a great job anyway.

That's cool - like I said in the original post, you can contribute without having to do the 'contest' by simply trying out strategies and reporting back.

So, I'm going to take my turn at this challenge. If you want to watch my decisions (especially early game) then drop by. (Shameless self-promotion here)

https://www.twitch.tv/dawnbringerrb

I will be live until around 7pm EST where then I will take a dinner break and then continue afterwards.

Awesome, watching you now. At some point I'll drop to go continue my game. :)

Was watching you, but I do not have a Twitch account. In any case, I wanted to enlighten you on something. The reason the Great Lighthouse was delayed was because each wonder you own raises the cost of the next, and on a turn where you'd complete both on it, the city you had ownership of first takes priority. Karakorum was obviously your first city, so it picked up the Oracle. The game does a check right here and re-evaluates the cost of wonders. This mechanic is in place to prevent wonder hogging. Tough loss, but now you know! :)

Game froze. GG =(

Gotta restart from scratch, but that's the most interesting part anyway right?

You can load your autosave and continue through most crashes.

So far:

Using Nationalist strategy, going Authority - Aesthetics - Rationalism - Order. Conquered Siam completely, took Rio and Attila's Court, making both my vassal.

The new continent's big dog is Ethiopia, who is 6 techs ahead and has a more advanced military than I do. I am actively spying on them and prepping a massive fleet along with my horde of heavy skirmishers, tercio, and cannons to conquer Carthage and have a staging point to conquer further.

It's 1645 right now on King. 3 capitals down, 4 more to go!
