Yeah, rather disappointed. I mean the whole "old save files will work in new game" means it's pretty much the same game with some additions. I wanted a whole new game. I guess It'll be a fun way to finally finish my BGII playthrough. At least they're hoping for BGIII, but that's still light years ahead.
The old savegame still work feature is some kind ob bad joke. The original game is now 14 years old (BG1 was releases int he same year as Win98) and the latest (PC) content from the BG franchise was Throne of Bhaal in 2001, so 11 years ago. I don't know how many players kept their original savegames for such a long time. I kept them quite a while (perhaps about 6 years? too long ago to remember exactly) but while hardware and OS came and went the files were lost. Mess Effect was a bit different as everybody knew there would be 3 games.
I actually keep my final saves on all my games. In fact, this thread makes me want to start up a game of BG2. Like I mentioned earlier, I play the hell out of Bg1, but not much BG2. I do think BG1 is the better game, although there are some things I really enjoy in 2 (like getting fireball much quicker ). I still haven't done all the strongholds in BG2, and I still want to do my Paladin main character game.

You do realize that a hell of a lot of people have played the BG games a lot more recently than that and/or multiple times, right? And if someone hasn't played it in a decade, they still have lots of time to do so.
The part where he talks about extra characters and voices makes me hope they are working on adding all the quests they didnt include before. I remember reading about how many quests they cut from the release of Baldurs Gate 2 which modders added in later on.

I might just be hopping mad that I don't have my savegames anymore
And finishing BG 1 and 2 with side quests and addons takes a lot of time (my guess would be about 150h in total)

My last save in BG1 states that I started it in January 2012, soloed a no reload on it, then moved onto BG2. Started that in February. Died once throughout the entire game. I still like playing it though. Can't wait for #3 to come out.
Also noting: they are going to monkey around with Planescape: Torment as well once BG3 is made. I personally think BG3 will have to deal with saving Waukeen.
There's a good discussion about this on these forums I've been on for a while: Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Bioware Forums
Dumbing it down? Who said they would ever do that? They are not Bioware, it is Wizards of the Coast and Atari doing this ambitious project. They are focusing on the Role Playing community, not trying to get the First Person Shooter community interested lest they alienate their current customer base.
yeah planescape isn't the best RPG out there, and I feel it is overrated. It seems to favor one style of playing (mentioned in the post above) if you want the most XP. Yes you can intimidate and stuff iirc, but playing the peaceful "talky" way gave the most experience.
