It is possible to 'walk' ships across land but I didn't need to do this until my latest game. I'm based in North America but there are no silver deposits handy. The best spot is on the West Coast with two lots of silver next to each other. However I didn't want to take a ship all the way around Cape Horn. I had plenty of cash so I bought a Privateer and two Silver Miners (one with tools) and took them down to Central America. This is how I crossed the isthmus.
Turn 1: Move the two Silver Miners ashore at (24,32)
Turn 2: The first Miner build a colony while the other moves to (23,33). The Privateer docks and the colony is abandoned.
Turn 3: The second Miner builds a new colony and the Privateer moves into it with the other Miner. That colony is then abandoned.
Turn 4: Privateer moves into Pacific Ocean with two Silver Miners aboard.
Once at my Silver Mine one Miner formed a colony and started mining while the other built roads and cleared the colony site. The Privateer will be used to haul the Silver to market.
You can also 'walk' a galleon inland to a colony site and use it as a super warehouse (you need to make this move before the colony is formed).
