Want an easy way to play Civ V online? Say hello to Giant Multiplayer Robot! (GMR)

Could you check this game? http://multiplayerrobot.com/Game/Details/1982

I was unable to send my savegame file via the desktop app, it was saying the file wasn't a Civ 5 savegame. I tried uploading it manually but the game stayed on my turn.

I then reverted to previous turn but my friend cannot download the file with the desktop app.

It seems everything went wrong as I was ready to upload my file during the update last night.

I play Austria, he plays Germany.

Thanks a lot for your help!

Sorry for the trouble Hawkwood! I think I've found the problem and fixed it. Let me know if it works for your friend now.

Hi Mel, I've sent you my error logs again.

Problems with The Big Gamble, outlined in the email. Game 850 I believe based on the last entry in the error log.

Thanks!

A little more feedback: just tried to launch Modern Times via the app, and it seemed to be hanging (I didn't wait around for the error message). Then DLed it from the website and it was a snap, a matter of seconds. So...it must be the app...?

It worked, thanks a lot!

Now, I just started to play in a new game and it glitched after the first turn expired. I only get a runtime error when clicking on the savegame.

Here's the save.

It's this game.

Lots of times a simple revert of a turn helps when you get error messages. It could be that the save was corrupted from the last player.
If it keeps happening even after reverts then you should absolutely contact the admins, but to save time always try reverting first. Might just be that simple.

I figured that since the first player didn't play his turn, reverting to him would mean to wait for the timer to expire again, without knowing for sure that it would work.

Since I would like this game to start, I thought it would be faster this way.

It turns out the game was corrupted by GMR on the very first turn. So nobody would have been able to play their turns up to you, you're just the first one to report it probably :)

Anyway, I believe we've isolated and fixed the bug that caused the problem so the game should be good to go as soon as the host takes the first turn!

Sometimes I get an email notification that it is my turn, but game itself does not show up in the "your turns" section of my desktop app. When this happens I need to go to the GMR website itself and move the files manually. This seems to happen when it becomes my turn because the previous player's turn timer expired. When I look at the game in the "all games" section of the app, it will list the game as expired x time ago. Having the previous players turn expire is the only time this happens for me, and its happened on at least 4 occasions. Let me know if you need more detail, and thank you for all your great work!

Thanks PrimEval, that did help! I've been slowly tracking down all the ways that a turn can get "out of sync" between the desktop client and the website and you just helped me uncover one more. I've fixed it and hopefully it will result in a better experience for everyone! Let me know if you run into any more of these issues :)

This sounds like a great idea/service. :)

I played Space Empires IV for years with people around the world via an Apache server someone pieced together and set up to control multiplayer PBEM turns. The guy who hosted the server ran it on donations but that never accounted for his time in fixing the little glitches that popped up, so kudos to you for your time/efforts.

I'm not a great player (King) but may have to give this a try sometime.

Do check it out. There are plenty of games that need replacement players if you want to dive in in the middle of a game, but also new games start now and then. Just keep your eyes open for them.

Thanks. :)

I haven't made an in-depth check of how it operates but if a friend and I wanted to set up a private game between us, could that be done?

Thanks. :)

Absolutely! Our YouTube Video (while a little dated) gives the best instruction for setting up a game and getting started with GMR. Let us know if you have any questions! :)

We just published an update to the GMR desktop client that completely changes the way it communicates with our server. Hopefully the only difference you'll see is the client responding faster, snappier, and more efficient! If you run into any problems please let us know. Thanks! :)
