Hi.

I have played perhaps 1000 hours of this addicting game. In the current patch I just cant win without turtling and then beelining bombers -> stealth. The computer just has too much stuff.

Last patch you could rush composite and usually take out one ai/cripple him. Or with Nebu even archer rush. Hwachas were also possible.

Emperor/Immortal you can quite often take out 3-4 ais with cross bow men and just, generally, steam roll.

I always go for domination since I dont like just sitting on my ass.

Bring catapults. 4-5 archers, 2 warriors/spears, 2-3 catapults. Usually does the trick for me :).

And even with Bombers, it isn't easy. I suspect a good mix of bombers/rocket artilleries (with infantry cover)/lancers can do the trick too. Sometimes there just isn't enough oil.

I find Composites/Xbows quite enough to take 2-3 cities on Deity. Then, i wait for bombers.

At what time are you hitting with this? Seems to me you need composites and it is difficult to get your army before maybe turn 60-70. Then you are facing 20-30 strength cities.

Yes, maybe you can take 2-3 cities with composites/xbows. But really; isnt it just better to try to stay friends. Get a RA and hit bombers a little earlier.

I agree that sometimes there isnt enough oil or there is a run away. I usually quit then.. :(

Well, I meant a generic "4-5 ranged, 2-3 melees & 2-3 sieges", rather than specific archers. I normally don't go on the offensive untill I have CB's. Yes, you do encounter 20-30 strength cities, in which case you have to be patient. Whenever the enemy starts counter-attacking me with more than 1 or 2 units, I pull everything 2 hexes back and wait till I can snipe them, before moving back into range of the city. The key to these early wars is to "abuse" the AI's terrible war tactics and never ever lose a unit - especially a ranged one. Even 30 strength cities fall to 3 catapults in 3 turns. You do, however, need at least 2 spots right by the city and preferably 4-5 spots within range of archers/catapults/galleys. Very hilly or even mountanious cities are very hard to take early.

I don't have a lot of late-game experience, as I enjoy pre-industrial age a lot more than post-industrial. I'm trying to overcome that - in my current game, I've been in constant war since it broke out right after I got CB's :)

Taking one neighbor with CB's is possible. Their advantage over catapults is that they can move and shoot. Which means, with the right terrain, you get at least one full round of fire, so even if you lose 1 or 2 on the next turn, the city will be softened already. And you still have 5 or 6 CB's to fire with. By the time catapults set up and ready for action, they're very dead.

Well, there is 90% chance you'll get DoW'ed by immediate neighbor on Deity, so you have to deal with that with CB's/Xbows. So, just defending is less optimal than defending and later retaliating to get couple cities with Xmen and tech to bombers. Couple extra cities will allow for faster bombers. Can keep few friends for RAs too.

Really one of the best ways to war on Deity is to get DoWed and counterpush really hard. A fresh DoW after the patch can be very frustrating because the AI does indeed have obscene spam, but with a counterpush, you can often catch them with very few units because they all got killed, like here when Sweden decided to DoW me(along with the Maya). I came back and kicked him in the nuts :D. Plus, once you really get going, spam them back!

Managed 2 ~T250 deity pangea domination wins after the patch with Arabia and Rome ..

Third one is in the making with Holland (only have Russia to deal with) almost to stealth have crap ton of bombers and wonders ...

All of them monument liberty starts - quick settling 6-7 cities ....

Arabia was the easiest - camel archers are quite strong - first invaded an unsuspecting Egypt... Had religion but did not get the happiness per The extra money from bazaar allowed gave me the funds to ally city states that supplied me with horses (didn't have many) and mass upgrade them to camel archers ... Far from stealth ...

With Rome had early DOF with Bizantium so we had lots of intertwined cities ... She decided to DOW because of this just as I finished researching IW ...Repelled the attack and went onto offensive ... Got her cities and capital with lots of Legions and one ballista .. Did not get a religion (few mistakes from my part) but adopted bizantium's religion and brought pagodas in most of my cities ..Had some rough hapiness patches because of the limited support from religion ... Also fell a bit behind science wise (rationalism opener bonus not working when unhappy ) .. One turn away from stealth ...

Holland's bonuses are also quite strong ... Grabbing 5 different luxuries fast and selling all copies gave plenty of gold but also the happiness required to keep growing ... The last city was on a hill with river and open ground to bait Harald.. The expected DOW came and had a bit of a hard time repelling his pikemen + trash push with a few CBs ... Had to delay to longswords, trebushets and crossbows to be able to finally crush him and take most of his cities (he gifted me chichen itza ) ...
Dutch were very strong science wise because they have plenty of food bonuses (polders) and the happiness to allow for non-stop growth ...Capturing a few naval units on the late game wars with the sea beggers is also very nice ... Might actually reach stealth difficult map with two run away monsters that would not war each other on the other side of the map slowed me down ...

Domination games - no RAs ... I typically reach stealth by the time the last civ is assembling spaceship parts so waiting for them is not really an option ...

I will try a bit more spam. Are you getting NC sometime?

It is possible to get to stealth around 230 with RA (never with leader/leaders). If you are paying everybody to war all the time they arent launching before ~280. You can probably take out one civ with bombers as well.

Camel Archers Rock!!

I went 3 city NC (tradition). Settled fourth city about 10-15 turns before chivalry close to my first target. Unfortunately he never dowed but after chivalry (about 110-120 turns) it was all downhill for the AIs. I took out three before turn 170. I should probably have battled one more but happiness issues made me play it safe. Currently at 220 and a few turns to bombers for the last AIs.

For other people not so familiar with Camel Archers. They are good up to cities with 60 in strength and nothing can stand against them on the battlefield before cavalry.

You can also try to do a naval army with frigate rush. Get barracks and armory for double promotion from right on and gather exp for next promotion (additional range) - can conquer basically every coastal city. However on deity such a strategy has only a short window as it becomes obsolete the moment AI's get great war bombers and eventually submarines. Then You need to retreat and wait for battleship/fighter combo to continue figtings.

Currently playing with Pacal. It is possible to survive with machinery and go for the kills with artillery even on diety.

However still half in score to the leaders at turn 200. Hopefully I will get bombers/stealth bombers before they win.

You can always rush with CBs or crossbows but it's harder i agree. This time if you go that direction you have to suffer and lose some units during the process. at least you have a chance to get big cities with some nice buildings in them compensating for the loss of some units.

I will bring 10+ ranged units if i do such rushes.
