I was going about a website about the history of Airfix(which I use for wargaming) and I came upon an intersting page: apparently in Sweden, war toys covering the years 1914-present are not banned, but almost, as they are "strongly discouraged". What does this mean, and why? I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this situaion which I find, is just silly.

I suppose they wish to take people away from the social indoctrination.

Indoctrination that goes way back to the 19th ceuntury and before.

Boys play with wooden swords or guns - Preparing them for adulthood and soldiering.
Girls play with prams and dolls - Preparing them for the role of motherhood.

Cool, a Colt 1911-model .45ACP pistol is still allowed.

Igloo, admit it, youd love to make a Babe Thread for guns wouldnt you:lol: Hey thats not a bad idea, I wonder if the mods would have a problem with it:goodjob: That would be a great thread, despite my anti gun views, I find them fascinating (but only from a distance;) )

I much prefer shooting them to talking about them, though. Come with me to the range sometime, I'll show you how fun it can be. :) It's okay, I promise you won't turn into a gun-toting family-murdering militiaman.

Yeah that'd be funny. Six months after we go to the firing range you see me on CNN getting arrested by police for having a private arsenal in the house, and Im wearing a tshirt with a picture of Charlton Heston holding up a rifle:lol:

The only way you could do such a thread, is only if you pass "from my cold, dead, body!". :joke:

Yeah what the hell was I thinking:confused: Its definitely not a good idea considering at least half the people here are kids.

And the other half just act like kids.

What difference does that make? Better to admire swords from a distance, or girls. Those things would have to get up close first, but a gun could still kill you from a distance. :mischief:

In fact the first Babe thread turned into one.

Right, this is the way it worked. Back in the 70's the national association for Swedish toy retailers out of political correctness decided that war toys (1914 and later) were bad and that they shouldn't sell them. No govt or anything, no public protest against the toys, it was the retailers themselves who made the decision.:crazyeye: (Cut me off from my fix of Airfix 54mm figures, the bastards!)
Amazingly enough they managed to get all of their members to stick to it. It lasted for something like ten years. I'd say it's pretty dead by now, but one of the effects it has had, is that the demand for toy soldiers etc. today is almost non-existant. Kids today are more into the fantasy stuff and computer games anyway.
That's the story. :)

Good save, Verbose. You just save this thread from the great trash can in the sky!

This is something that gets a page or two of headline space every couple of years in NZ as well, when a child is abnormally violent, or the NZ anti-gun lobby tries to make a point.

When your whole state centers around not offending anyone, your options are very limited...this doesn't come as a suprise to me, but seems ironic as Sweden is the world's largest per capita arms exporter (about 3.5 larger than the U.S.) in the world.

You mean just like how China is per capita among the lowest polluters in the world?

I searched and I was unable to find reliable data that would confirm this. Would you, otherwise I am going to take this at face value.

though the answer is generally obvious, im just curious to hear your reasoning on that desicision, col. Why not?
