Was this really necessary?

Confuse Sweden with Switzerland? That's like confusing Australia with Russia. Knowing individual states of a country is different than knowing prominent global countries. If western culture is ripping people off, what about Chinese culture? Average income of $2000+ / year and the largest polluter worldwide. They didn't add those tidbits?

Your German Factoid is all facts, there is no opinion stated in there. The study that conducted it may not be correct, but it was based off of something other than pure negative opinion.

Yes, Take-Two put porn games into a GTA game, then blamed it on the GTA modding community.
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6129500.html

Don't be surprised if a Porn Civ (with leader Ron Jeremy) is in Civ 5, and we get blamed for it.

Were people really that insulted by those lines? Odd, considering that whoever wrote it is probably an American.

On the Ottoman civ description on the Civilization V site:

"Many Americans know very little about the Ottoman Empire (it occupies the blind spot Americans have for pretty much everything between Greece and China)."

More like, who cares. At the end of the day email them if you think it should be changed. I'm sure most people will look at that, raise their eyebrow at it, and then move on.

Its funny how this one line on a video game website has spawned a roundabout discussion on culture and politics when it really has nothing to do with this statement on the website. If you think it's attacking American education, maybe its just your teachers not doing their job in history class. If you think its 2K/Fraxis going downhill, you're probably reading a little to DEEP into each and everything they say (considering its a tidbit about a civilization on their website rather than an interview or announcement). Sound's like you're a fan of Civ.

But would you want your 5 year kid to play Civ 5 porn games? :nope:

No, but I also wouldn't let my 5 y/o play a game with an adults only rating, which GTA had. I also wouldn't have a 5 y/o kid because I hate children.

well, Alabama is (supposingly) much bigger than switzerland and austria put together. somehow I think it's more or less the same thing if a european (or asian) says he knows not where alabama is. there was much media hype lately concerning switzerland (ubs etc.) so maybe the confusion with sweden isn't there anymore.

sure, there is not mocking about china, and that's a bit disappointing from a sarcastic point of view. I never said western civilization would be bad. the part with "ripping off" wasn't meant that seriously, but I really think in the west, so-called psychology is used nearly everywhere to "convince" people to buy something. this isn't necessarily a "rip off" so the wording was a bit lame. my appologies. :)

concerning the link about porn: if some Anti-game-politic-people have to rave about some compute models I really don't take this seriously. they just want to get votes! that's all politics is about...

Well, other sites say that everyone in the world knows very little about the Ottoman Empire (it occupies the blind spot everyone has for pretty much everything between Greece and China)."

So it indeed seems to suggest that Ottoman Empire is just some worthless country, that no one in the world knows about, and that no one knows crap about anything between Greece and China. In that case, I suppose they could be right, the world is just ignorant of such un-exciting places (according to Firaxis).

This means even Turkey has a blind spot for themselves. I guess I agree, it must be the truth. Just happens there is an anti-american translator working at Firaxis.

Still it's a bit ignorant for Firaxis to call the whole world ignorant (of Turkey).

No, but I also wouldn't let my 5 y/o play a game with an adults only rating, which GTA had. I also wouldn't have a 5 y/o kid because I hate children.

It wasn't given the appropriate rating at first, which was why when it was found out it was pulled off the shelves from many stores.
Granted, 5 year olds shouldn't be playing GTA anyways, but still I wouldn't want my 12 year old playing sex games either.

Perhaps we should ask Take2K Greg if they plan on putting a hidden porn game in Civ 5?

I have completely lost track of how you went from "they're anti-American" to "they're going to put porn in our game," but sure, I'll play. go ahead and ask. If he says yes I'll buy 10 copies.

Wow, a simple joke taken out of context. I hope all these people who are offended will never crack a joke about anyone else. How ironic alot of joke on here, alot of them are Americans who are lauging at them.

Oh I see, it's ok to laugh at other people but not at yourself?

You don't know that they were joking. They could have been serious about it.

I tried to start the Fun Ignorant Jab Session, since everyone else said they thought it was okay that Firaxis did that. But seems no one else thought it was okay to do that (which is a bit contradictory, and even I was contradicting myself for doing it).

But now, we realize that it was a joke towards the whole world (because of various translations), so actually the Ottoman thing is saying that no one, not even Turkish folk, know where their own country is. That is really insulting to them.

I have completely lost track of how you went from "they're anti-American" to "they're going to put porn in our game," but sure, I'll play.

Now they are anti-american, anti-ottoman, and anti-world! It's a selling point! And yes, hidden Civ 5 porn is a distinct possibility (although chances are low) since they have done it in the past.

EDIT: I sent 2K Greg a msg, but he has not responded yet. And with Firaxis being anti-world, this means they are not for global governance.

All right all right, I sent them an email. Let's see if it gets changed.

Joking or not, there is no need to speak for 2k on the matter. They can explain themselves if they feel like it.

Update: Response from them: Thank you for your email. I have forwarded to our team, and are looking into this. Thank you again for your support of the game.

Updated 2: Response from 2K Relations:

Hi There,

Thank you again for your email. We have made amendments to the description.

Has there ever been a more appropriate time to say  ?

By the way, it seems to be being changed right now. Some of the leaders have art up instead of 3d models.

Does this mean they'ved removed the Domination and Conquest victory conditions?:D:lol:

Not only is that implying that Firaxis think that everbody who plays this game is an American, and a dumb one at that, they're also saying that the Ottomans were pretty much the greatest empire inbetween Greece and China, which is truly false. It's stuff like this that puts me off as an British Armenian. I have respect for Turkey, but this piece of crap shouldn't be on the official site.

Near as i can tell every factoid sucks. China made ancient ice cream? Siam's representative won the Miss Universe pageant in 1988? Germans like beer? Russia had a beard tax?

And my favorite factoid has to be for the Arabs -- Factoid: None. They're all inane, but you seriously couldn't even come up with one for them? Surely something has happened that's worthy of comment, even if it's just "1001 Arabian nights was a book!"

That blurb could have been written about other factoids unimportant to daily life, such as the names of all the different kinds of terrier. Knowing those things doesn't make you intelligent, it makes you a bore.

Intelligent people solve problems that other people cannot solve -- like how to turn twenty morons in a house into a pop culture sensation, or how to produce petrol using only a single celled organism and a bunch of sugar.

Boring people attempt to be mobile encyclopedias, and are easily replaced with a working internet connection.

The people who wrote those entries don't even qualify as boring. I guess that makes them non-persons or something.

Actually, the literacy rate in the United States is 99.0%.

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/us.html

To be clear, I'm not arguing with you, because I understand you get your facts from a (semi) legitimate source. But in practice, I must in my life have been acquainted with some disproportionate number illiterate people...

1. My mom worked with mentally handicapped people for 15 years. When I was a preteen I'd go to work with her. These peoples' "mental ages" were significantly younger than mine, and they weren't capable whatsoever of learning to read.

2. Learning disability, to consider it a "seperate boat" certainly, people with extreme dyslexia, or for example such profound ADD or ADHD they simply cannot make heads or tails of a letter, much less a word.

3. There are still (and not always so remote) small pockets of populace in the USA where women are simply not allowed to learn to read and write, for cultural reasons or abuse, depending on how you view it.

4. I've met functional people, who work and can drive, but cannot read a stop sign. They know it "means" stop, but if you said, "write the word "stop" on a piece of paper," they'd be incapable.

5. Illegal immigration: people who've been working in farming, sweat shops, prostitution or whatever other trade since they were particularly young and were never given the opportunity of schooling.

6. People who just don't care.. and you'd be surprised at the number of these, particularly in urban areas.

7. Brain injury from accidents or patterned abuse, where a person's mind loses the cognitive ability to read and write even if perhaps they were previously capable. I suppose this could fall in the realm of mental handicap, but I separate it because they were previously able.

and other reasons... and I still meet people, in conversation at restaurants, bars, or on the street (not daily, weekly, but certainly monthly) who relate to me they "never learned to read". Most of these are over 50.

So government statistics tell me those people include only some 3 million to 6 million Americans? I have a suspicion their data is askew, from my position of living in central Illinois, not some stereo-typical backwoods hotbed of uneducated populace like in Arkansas, West Virginia or Alabama.

Hey guys. I just wanted to let you know that the text on that page on the website has been changed.

That text actually comes from the first paragraph in the in-game Civilopedia. It wasn't really the right type of description for the website, so we changed it.

In the real Civilopedia, it goes on with many paragraphs of Ottoman history, as a lot of the 'pedia pages do. :)
