Washington (IC) Immortal Cookbook

@Gkey and others

Spoiler :
@bobbyboy29
..... typed "civilization 4" in google (took me only like 3 years, yeah). Civfanatics opened for me Civ4 in whole glory.

That's pretty much the same exact thing as me except may closer to 2 years

a few more CiV thoughts:

Yep...Stonehenge is a very nice early wonder here and is actually one of the few wonders that has a somewhat parallel or similar benefit as that in Civ4...that is, raising your culture so you can expand faster. A lot of wonders have change significantly. Chicken Pizza is good now, though I forget the benefit at the moment. Oxford is like Oracle now except coming a bit later in the game. Pyramids is basically Haggus Sofa.

Game really seems to emphasize slower expansion - at least in terms of number of cities. Cultural expansion or gaining tiles and population are huge. Pop is your science. Ghandi is a great example of this and is setup for very large cities but few of them. He would be the OCC king.

@GKey or others

In your 400 AD save: were you planning to reach Liberalism first? will trading Paper be dangerous for that goal?

@Fierabras
We are 7 turns from Education and don't have monopoly on paper anyway. You have a good trade? Go for it IMO. Up to you.

400 AD - 625 AD (15 turns)

Spoiler :

As GKey advised, I bribed Bismarck to make peace with Giglamesh for Theology and 250 gold. Pretty soon I took Kish and Zimbir with the stack GKey prepared for us (awesome maceman!).

I was holding on to Paper for a while until Pacal suggested this:

Civ4ScreenShot0067-2.jpg

I took it, because Monty and me weren't the only ones with Paper already.

On turn 13 I razed the last Sumerian city:

Civ4ScreenShot0069-2.jpg

Dhoomstriker's Sumerica has served us well, but is needed no more.

Caste System proved to be useful for running artists in our newly captured cities to pop borders. I also focused on getting courthouses up in former Sumeria (2 already build) after granaries.

8 turns to Liberalism now and I'll take Printing Press.

7 turns:
Spoiler :

Ok, as been requested I will try to be more specific with round description.

Turn 0: peace between Bis and Gilg for Theo + 250 gold.
Trade optics+70Gold+WM from Maya for paper+drama. If he will get drama himself I lose this trade.
Move 2 galleys from Philo to LA, forgot about them completely. MM Lagash and Eridu to get longow(crossbow) before unhappiness hit, plus assign artist in Eridu – border pop in 8 so I can chain irrigate San Francisco.
NY starts Caravell – 9 turns, Grrr, I need more production! Why on earth didn’t Kossin give as spiritual leader? I need Slavery-OR to whip all these buildings, galleys and units for Monty. But 3 turns of anarchy…

Turn 1:
Lui willing trade engineering, but not for compass+paper. I trade him Compass for 270+World map, that makes me able trade paper+optics for engineering next turn.
Nibru pacified, assign artist for border pop in 4. I’d better whip some granary there with slavery, but CS has it war uses too. Worker starts chopping near Washington to speed NE up.Our stuck 1 turn from Kish.

Turn 2: Promote cat to CR2, as have been suggested in
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=380406
and take Kish with no losses.
Trade Engineering from Lui for Paper+optics+235 gold (he wanted WM, but I won’t help him circumnavigate).Immediately ask him for 60 gold, he accepts. I am greedy, I know.
Maya are most advanced now. No worry, edu in 5, I can pull it in 3 but want gold for upgrades. BPT is pretty low, but who cares?

Turn 3: CR3 axe upgraded to mace. Workshop done at Seattle, start another one, with guilds expected soon it will be 1f3H till chemistry and we need production here.
Civ4ScreenShot0005.JPG

I will gladly give you education for declaring on Maya, but you can’t betray close friends…
Workers move to improve Uruk. What a wonderful city! If I go attack Bis, I will move capital here.

Turn 4: Ask HC for 60 gold, he accepts, thx mate! Workers finished chopping at Washington – irrigation, NE in 2.

Turn 5: We capture Zimbir with no losses( 4 workers?! What would I do with these…).
Nibru popped borders giving us access to copper. HC got Astro.

Turn 6: Here we go!

Pericles.jpg

Pacal created colony from what he got in our continent! Additional trade partner. Education next turn and he willing to trade Guilds so we can trade banking next turn from Pacal and and we can start WW! Because…:

Civ%20IV%20Beyond%20The%20Sword%209232010%2022331%20PM.jpg

Lui now ready to DoW Pacal! I guess its because of the drop in his score/power.

Turn 7: Education in. NE done in Washington, run 5 specs there GS in 6 at 97%. Yes we have cheap harbors – but I do I need trebs instead? Stopping here. Some busy 6 rounds.

There are some game breaking decisions to make:
Yes, Lui ready to DoW Pacal.

Civ%20IV%20Beyond%20The%20Sword%209232010%2023349%20PM.jpg

Also I can bribe Bis into war with HC, Get Guilds from Pericles for edu and get banking for edu from Pacal next turn.

That will eliminate our tech lead though and put liberalism in danger (I am sure I will be there first anyway, just no Steel or MT from it). But it will add some more fun to game. Monty got maces, so it’s not going to be picnic there. Maintenance is high anyway, so this colony looks less tempting even with GLH. Backstab Bis and liberate our continent?
Will sleep on it.
Opinions?

Btw, guys I played CiV and its... oh hi Gumbolt! :hide:

last post about ciV from me here...just for those of you that don't follow CiV general disccusions...my litte 'rant'
little rant about rage quitting AI

I think I will probably look at our save here afterall, will have to think about it. These kind of things really kill immersion and connection with game. Technically I could not exploit the AI, but this is hilarious

@GKey

Your 7 turns show me that I'm really not good enough for this level (I usually play Monarch). Maybe I should start playing another game, like ... CiV ?!?

@firebras
Dude, we all learning here. And these were really busy 7 turns.
Spoiler :

Next going to be more relaxing. But still there is big problem with production. I just don't have enough to get army fast. And still miss lots of infra. That's main weakness of my save IMO.
Btw in your game: we got Great Scientist in Washington, which will bulb you most of PP, so you can try shot to Replaceable Parts from lib.

Heres my shadow game to 880 AD:
Spoiler :

Settled SW since I wanted to make room for the seafood cities. I'm going for civil service first because of the huge GP farm. I skipped bronze working since I'll go straight into caste/pacifism ASAP.

Civ4ScreenShot1063.jpg

I have only 5 cities which means low maintenance and high BPT after bureau is in. The GP farm is running 8 scientists. I put a bulb into education, and plan a bulb into liberalism, a bulb into PP and then run merchants. 8 merchants is +24 a turn in gold and a few trade missions will net me the upgrade gold I need for cavalry.

Civ4ScreenShot1070.jpg

Heres the 200 turn mark.. I ended up killing 2 of Monte's galleys and taking peace for literature.

Civ4ScreenShot1077.jpg

Stopped at lib-rifles... Upgrade cost is like 400 gold per HA to cavalry and I built 30+ HAs :) I was just hitting enter without thinking. Should have put gold modifiers in and let the HE city do HAs. Giggles doesn't have many cities and his stack is in the border city that we can hit first turn... Bismarck is woefully behind due to grabbing all that land... I'm looking forward to see where you guys end up. I'm going to start again and HA rush Giggles as well so we can see which ends up being better.

Civ4ScreenShot1078.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot1079.jpg

@GKey--Comments for the first 7 turns + some trading comments from a bit later

Note that I have already played 20 turns, so "a bit later" isn't too much later in the game.
Spoiler :
Turn 0: peace between Bis and Gilg for Theo + 250 gold.
I did the same, but I have plans of attacking Bismarck later, so I bribed him back into the war, along with bribing Monte, so that they'd both drag their reputations through the mud with the other 3 AIs, since the others like Gilgamesh.

I think that I did the same thing again with Bismarck a couple of turns later when he was about to beat me to Gilgamesh's southern City of Zimbir--bribing Bismarck out of war (so that his troops would be teleported outside of Gilgamesh's Culture) and then bribing him back in, to drag his name through the mud again.

Trade optics+70Gold+WM from Maya for paper+drama.
I did the same thing but I forgot to do it for a turn, so I think that I only got 50 Gold in the bargain.

Move 2 galleys from Philo to LA, forgot about them completely.
Since my plan is to go after Bismarck as my next target, I sent one Galley around the continent to defend my future Fish in Zimbir and left one near Philly, to defend the Fish there.

Galleys don't make for great naval defenders, but the hope is that the AI will be less inclined to "walk in and pillage" our Seafood Resources if there is at least a military unit that needs to be engaged before they can pillage. Let's hope, anyway.

NY starts Caravell – 9 turns, Grrr, I need more production!
Oops! I forgot to do that... although I regularly traded for World Maps, I later lost the Circumnavigation bonus to one of the AIs.

I need Slavery-OR to whip all these buildings, galleys and units
Well, it's too bad that you picked the Civics that you picked, since, well, we're playing from your game! ;) Also, it seems that you already used up a Golden Age, so no easy way out--for me, I'm just going to stick it out in Pacifism and Caste System and make the best of it, building a few more Workshops and (for once) playing my mid-game with very little whipping. As long as you're always working improved squares, this approach can work out well in the medium to long run, although no Slavery does mean no whipping "immediately desired" items like your Caravel.

Worker starts chopping near Washington to speed NE up.
I did the same. Actually, I'm planning on clear-cutting all of our Forests. Normally, I would prefer to be in Organized Religion when doing so, but since it seems like we'll be stuck in Pacifism, I figured that the immediate benefit of Forests without the Org Rel bonus was better than later Forests still without the Org Rel bonus.

We have sufficient Workers to do this kind of clear-cutting and sufficient Resources in trade to not worry about the loss of Health, so, hopefully, getting Forges and a couple of other buildings up from chopping can get me focused on Military Unit production that much sooner.

edu in 5, I can pull it in 3 but want gold for upgrades.
For me, I wanted Gold for trading purposes. I actually delayed researching Education for a long time, collecting about 1000 Gold.

The unit upgrades, in my opinion, are currently of little use. Axemen, Chariots, and a Catapult to Bombard (actually, Bismarck did all of my Bombarding, gotta love that guy) are more than sufficient to wipe out Gilgamesh. I'd suggest saving your Gold, since Bismarck is too huge to go up against anytime soon. Upgrade later, use the Gold for trading now.

Louis was first to Nationalism, so I threw a turn of research into it, finished off Education, and traded Education plus about 350 Gold to him for Nationalism.

Nationalism + Education let me pick up another trade or two.

Note that Huayna can also be bribed into Hinduism for less than 400 Gold, which is another use that I had for my saved-up Gold. I'm pretty sure that I got Printing Press off of him, using Nationalism + Education, thanks to having first paid the Gold to get him to Friendly as a fellow Hindu.

Yes, we risk the AIs liking each other more and trading even more actively, but Huayna was already Friendly with Louis, so it doesn't make THAT big of a difference, while it gives us one more advanced trading partner.

Workers move to improve Uruk. What a wonderful city! If I go attack Bis, I will move capital here.
That's a pretty good idea. I'd already started to Cottage it in my game, so I may just do so. But, I'll wait until I have some momentum against Bismarck and start capturing Cities before doing so.

On City-specialisation, Eridu looks like the best spot for our Heroic Epic.

I also Farmed-over our Cottages in Washington (not the Flood Plains one that New York can steal). I don't like to make the capital a Great Person Farm, but now that we're committed, we might as well go all-out, right?

We capture Zimbir with no losses( 4 workers?! What would I do with these…).
Start chopping!

Pacal created colony from what he got in our continent! Additional trade partner.
Pacal did the same in my game. Except, he spawned Elizabeth, an AI that everyone else hates. So, I don't dare trade with her, for fear of offending others for trading with their Worst Enemy.

Lui now ready to DoW Pacal! I guess its because of the drop in his score/power.
Louis will declare on someone he is only Pleased with.
Louis' attitude towards Pacal will be the average Attitude (rounded down) of how Louis feels about Pacal and how Louis feels about Pacal's Vassal.

So, if Louis is Cautious with Pacal's Vassal and Louis is Friendly with Pacal, then Louis, in terms of the War Declaration determination, is the average of those two (rounded down). This fact means that Louis will actually be Pleased with Pacal plus Pacal's Vassal until Louis is Friendly with each of them separately, and only then will he be Friendly towards their "team"--and Louis' attitude towards that "team" is all that matters for bribing Louis into war.

Therefore, it was a huge strategic error on Pacal's part to found a Colony (create a Vassal), since, until Louis is Friendly with that Vassal, Louis will treat the Pacal + Vassal relationship as Pleased (or lower), which is sufficient for us to be able to bribe Louis into a war with Pacal.

I don't think that I will make such a bribe, as I am not yet ready to take sides in such a war, but we'll see how things play out.

Yes we have cheap harbors – but I do I need trebs instead?
I decided to build the Harbours, since they are cheap. It's my compromise--I'll build Forges everywhere, a couple of Courthouses (but not many), several Harbours, then try and STOP my builder tendencies cold in their tracks and just pump out Barracks + Units everywhere.

It's probably better just to skip the Harbours unless you have a City that can use the Health. For example, I stopped building the Aqueduct in New York on Turn 0 and will just put a Forge + Harbour there, then move onto military units. Harbours only act on the BASE Trade route value, so you really are only adding 0.5 * 1.0 (or 0.5 * 1.1 in a bigger-sized City) per Trade Route (so, roughly 0.5 + 0.5 = 1.0 extra Commerce, since we only have two Trade Routes). +1 Commerce per turn in the City is nothing to write home about.

The inner-Builder in me went a little Harbour-crazy, but enough is enough, Military Units after that--forget Markets, additional Courthouses, additional Libraries, and I'm not even going to build a single University, until the war with Bismarck is on and I actually start to win it.

Backstab Bis and liberate our continent?
That's my plan. But not with our current miserably-sized army. We need troops--a lot more troops--and that means skipping infrastructure.

Either that or keep your nose clean, stay out of further wars, and just build infrastructure.

A peaceful path is likely going to be a weaker approach than normal, since we don't have a set of well-matured Cottages in a Bureaucratic capital, meaning that rushing to Oxford University won't have as big of a payoff as it would have in the games where we matured a lot of Cottages in Washington and built the National Epic elsewhere.

Yes, Lui ready to DoW Pacal.
I would only pull that trigger if you plan to join in on one side of the war. If you won't do so, then you'll likely end up being asked to stop trading and to join the war by both sides, ending up with -1 to -3 negative Diplo points from both sides before their war is over. That drop in relations may lose you your Friendly status with one or both of those AIs. If they aren't Friendly towards you, you will lose your ability to keep trading with them beyond the WFYABTA limit.

Also I can bribe Bis into war with HC, Get Guilds from Pericles for edu and get banking for edu from Pacal next turn.
To each their own. I'd rather put a turn or two of research into techs like Nationalism and Printing Press and trade THOSE techs for Education.

I turned around and used one of the techs that I got from the other AI to backfill Guilds, if I recall correctly (like turning around and trading Printing Press to someone else the turn after getting it in trade, in exchange for Guilds).

The human player can definitely abuse trading, which is why WFYABTA is one of the limits put in the game. But, with several Friendly AIs, we can go back to using abusive trading practices, a-la-Mansa-Musa style, and climb the tech tree rather quickly.

^^^^
:lol::lol: Still feel lazy to go on with our turn. There isn't much stuff in CiV forum worth of reading for now IMO.
Spoiler :
Will need to wait till some advanced guys play it and post some useful staff.
I copy paste this post because its 90% express my feelings for now:
...But regardless, here is a list of some things I find rather pesky and annoying and I'm curious to see how others feel and if they have some of their own they'd like to share. Hopefully Firaxis can address some of these things.

01) Steam. (lol, sorry... had to say it)

02) The cinematic plays at EVERY launch after the initial one. Not only that, but I have to hit Enter or Esc like 5 times before it goes away!

03) Sometimes clicking the icon on my desktop and waiting forever for the Steam dialog box that says, “Launching Civ V”. Thankfully, it doesn't happen that often.

04) The legal mumbo jumbo stuff at the beginning of every launch that I have to click “Continue” to before accessing the main menu. Is it necessary? Many other high-quality games from some big-name companies don't do this.

05) Saving the game and not having a default file name available. I have to click an existing file, click on the file name field, press End, press Delete, and then type the next number (Like Japan 06, Japan 07, etc.). It should come with a default name that is already highlighted in case you want to name it something more descriptive like, “Just researched Gunpowder”.

06) Incomplete Civilopedia; brief descriptions and no links. Sometimes only text with no graphics or symbols. Seems whenever I do a search for legitimate terms (raze, razing, cooperation, secrecy, etc.) it doesn’t know what I’m talking about.

07) Quirky production queue system. It's a shame simple Shift-clicking and Ctrl-clicking aren't implemented.

08) The Tutorial Messages don’t save between game sessions and advisors keep telling you the same things over and over. “Cities can bombard enemies… no way, really!? Thanks again Mr. Military Advisor, I almost forgot!” (Yeah, I know I can disable them, but I'll only do that once I have a good grasp of the game.)

09) No “Check for Updates” button within the game menu. I heard there was an update released, yet it wasn't installed on mine and I can't find it. /shrug

10) The quick save hotkey (F11) is right next to the quick load hotkey (F12). I already once loaded by accident and lost some turns.

11) Rivers are f-ugly as hell. I don’t mind the “painted” look of the terrain (I like it) or that trees don’t sway and stuff (which isn’t necessary and eats up memory) but rivers look like total crap, ESPECIALLY when they run into the ocean. Ice looks crappy too and sometimes just looks out of place and overlaps the terrain.

12) There isn't a column for Great Person Points within the city overview screen to compare cities.

13) Trying to figure out what the exact numerical health is of enemies without estimating it from the health bar - am I missing something?

14) Montezuma’s leader diplomacy graphics. Looks awesome, but a bit over the top and gobbles up memory.

15) Right clicking off spammy message bubbles on the right side of the interface and accidentally queuing up movement for a unit across the screen – doh!

Any others?

Lymond helped me with issue #2, but rest are there still. Mainly awkward city screen. After few hours of playing I am still not comfortable with it. Just wonder what were they thinking making things that not user friendly. Almost useless, missing pictures civilopedia makes me feel that game is incomlete, etc.
Don't be negative! Give it some time! You right, you right, but still...
On a positive side almost no curses regarding crashes etc can be found there. On my pretty old machine demo runs flawlessly . That's a huge plus no doubt.

I tried to play out the round, but gave up. Trying to fight a war with no troops while under Pacifism drove me nuts, and losing the Liberalism race to HC was the last straw (and no, I didn't trade paper/edu to him).

Save was definitely lucking production. Sorry about that. CS/Pac=no whipping does not help either. But CS/Guilds workshops are huge and no whipping means city finally can grove which is about time this stage of game.

I am making walkthrough of my turns right now. Takes long with all these screenies.

I switched to Slavery / Free Religion after that and part-bulbed Printing Press with a great scientist.

Next were Gunpowder, Military Tradition and Chemistry, when Montezuma suddenly invaded my west coast. He captured Atlanta and landed troops near New York and Chicago.

I was mass producing cuirassiers, so I decimated Monty's armies and fleet of galleons.

By 1200 AD I have landed my invasion force, ready to capture Tenochtitlan.

Spoiler :
Trying to fight a war with no troops while under Pacifism drove me nuts
Weird. If you send in the entire stack of an army that GKey had built for us, it should be a cinch to capture Gilgamesh's last 2 Cities on our mainland.

Bismarck has already bombarded the defences of the first City down to 0% Cultural defence, and we have an "instant killer" in our Maceman that can win the first fight at 99.9% odds against the best defender.

Our City Raider Axemen AND our Chariots will eat Vultures alive when we're doing the attacking.

I didn't need to build a single new unit in order to capture both of Gilgamesh's Cities, and our military stack is already pretty small, so Pacifism won't really hurt us measurably more than it will benefit us.

Did you get into a different war with someone other than Gilgamesh? It would be hard to do so, since so many AIs like us.

losing the Liberalism race to HC was the last straw (and no, I didn't trade paper/edu to him).
I'm pretty sure that he already had Philosophy, which is one of the pre-requisites for Liberalism, meaning that as soon as he learned Education (by self-teching it or getting it in trade), he would be able to beeline for Liberalism. The only "trick" to all but guaranteeing getting Liberalism in our game would be to save up Gold for a while until have sufficient Gold (running at a 0% Science Rate BEFORE learning Education--with particular emphasis on the BEFORE part to avoid giving the AIs the ability to piggyback off of your research into Education) in order to run at a 100% Science Rate to be able to complete Education + Liberalism without reducing your Science Rate.

Probably the easiest way to LOSE Liberalism would be to research Education with no money in the bank, then having an AI or two piggyback off of your research, trade Education around to his buddies, and then one of the AIs setting their Science Rate to 100% and beating you.

Another way would be if you researched Education, allowing the AIs to piggyback off of your research, while skipping going for Liberalism next, which would only work as a tactic if none of the AIs knew Paper. Otherwise, it's a method that is very likely to lose the Liberalism race.

No attempt at selling techs. I've almost never done that, and didn't consider it.
Well, there's a habit that you'll want to break if you are seriously interested in climbing the difficulty ladder.

The AIs get research-based bonuses (as well as other bonuses, like bonuses to their production) on higher difficulty levels. The best way to level the playing field is to take advantage of their easier research by getting techs in trade from them.

That way, you get to take ADVANTAGE of their benefits, so that you can benefit, too!

Trading away a tech for other techs and for lump-sums of Gold is a great way to stay competitive in a higher-difficulty game and it is certainly a technique that is powerful and useful enough to make you want to get used to using it.

Even if it appears that a trade is unfair... you give them a tech worth 2300 Flasks and they only give you one with 700 Flasks in return, that's 700 Flasks worth of research that you won't have to do, so you've come out ahead. If you can sometimes make more than 1 trade with a tech, you'll even be further ahead!

In most games, there is a limit to how many techs that you can get in trade, but in our particular game, this limit is ignored by several of the AIs, as an AI that is Friendly with you will ignore this limit (the We Fear You Are Becoming Too Advanced limit).

On lower levels, you're probably used to being the tech leader. Well, that's not a practical situation to be in for most games where you're playing at a difficulty level that is "fair" for your skill level--ideally, you'll be playing at a level where you are equal with the AIs if you trade frequently and will fall behind them in tech if you only trade when the AIs come to you with an offer. All that you need to do is start to MAKE yourself some opportunities.

Before you pick your next tech to research, see who has it and who doesn't. Try to reserach something that you can trade to multiple AIs, but realise that if an AI has already researched it and there are 2 or 3 AIs that know it or there are a couple of AIs that it is Friendly with, you might actually lose the chance to trade it by the time that you research said tech. Still, being able to trade with 1 or 2 AIs that aren't very far ahead of you is still a great way to play and to help get you "caught up" in the tech race.

A great way to consistently do well in the tech race on higher difficulty levels is to leverage tech trading, which means keeping an eye on the F4 -> TECHS screen on a regular basis (I check that screen each turn) and then talking with individual leaders who look like they might have something of value to offer to you in exchange for one of your techs.

An advanced technique is that if you have a tech that they need but if they won't give you what you need, start to research what they have. After a few turns of research (check each turn), as long as they are not ALSO researching the tech that you want to trade to them, the relative difference between the values of the techs will work out in your favour, and you can trade your tech for the remainder of the research into the tech that they have.

This approach will fail, though, if they are also researching the tech that you want to trade to them, as the relative value of the tech that you have to offer to them will go down in their eyes after each turn. Still, it is a technique that works very frequently and should be employed liberally to get you the best value possible out of you tech-trading deals.

Spoiler :
625 AD - 1200 AD (50 turns)
I've played a bit further in my game but not quite as far as you did, but I figured that you could use some feedback while the game was still fresh in your mind.

While I had Optics already in hand, I chose Astronomy from Liberalism
Sure, that works well, as it's an expensive tech and is great for trading.

After that I made the following trades with Pacal:
Just out of curiosity, why didn't you try trading both of your techs in the same trade deal?

It probably worked out to be the same in this case, but sometimes by combining multiple techs where the full value of the tech that you are selling cannot be paid for in excess Gold by the AI, you can possibly get more value by selling multiple techs in the same trade deal.

I switched to Slavery / Free Religion after that and part-bulbed Printing Press with a great scientist.
Slavery, okay, but instead of Free Religion, I would have suggested Organized Religion, Theocracy, or even Paganism.

Being in Hinduism is just too powerful, as it means that Louis and Pacal will trade an infinite number of techs to us.

I see that you already lost the ability to trade with Louis. Since Huayna is easily bribable into Hinduism, you also lost the potential ability to trade with him by slipping into Free Religion.

Next were Gunpowder, Military Tradition and Chemistry, when Montezuma suddenly invaded my west coast. He captured Atlanta and landed troops near New York and Chicago.
Monte has yet to attack me in my game, but it probably helped that I bribed him into the war with Gilgamesh, which not only kept him from starting a war, but it also meant that I'd recently traded him a tech, which is something that the AIs remember--some AIs remember that you traded a tech to them within the last 10 turns, some for only 5 turns, but they do remember and they do factor this point into some of their decisions of how to treat you.

For example, they are far more likely to make a demand of you if you haven't traded a tech to them recently than if you had been trading with them recently.

I was mass producing cuirassiers, so I decimated Monty's armies and fleet of galleons.

By 1200 AD I have landed my invasion force, ready to capture Tenochtitlan.
Okay, well it sounds like the war is going well for you, anyway, so maybe it was a blessing in disguise. At least you didn't anger any of the other AIs by declaring war on "their Friend, Monte."

In fact, Monte will even still like you reasonably well after the war, assuming that you don't raze too many of his Cities (it's potentially best to just let him keep the Ice Island City near our Iron + Whale City, since that City is useless for us to own but can mean an additional Foreign, Inter-continental Trade Route later, after the war is over).

Tech situation is a bit bad.
It'll get better if you switch out of Free Religion and back into a Religous Civic that lets Hinduism be your State Religion. That way, Louis should trade with you again, and Huayna will, too, if you pay him around 400 Gold (or an equivalently-valued tech) to bribe him into Hinduism.

In fact, Alexander just got a bunch of free techs because Pacal made him his Colony.

This situation is GREAT for you, because it means that:
1. Alex starts off knowing all of the techs that Pacal knew.
AND
2. Alex's Research Rate is going to be pitiful, so you just need to research techs that Alex does not know and you can trade such a tech to Alex for one of the techs that Alex got for free from Pacal, without much worry of Alex beating you to researching the tech that you wanted to trade to Alex--this fear of being "beaten" to a tech that you want to trade is a more likely situation to occur with other AIs, who will have much better research rates.
AND
3. Alex was spawned recently, so his We Fear You Are Becoming Too Advanced count is ZERO. That means that you will be able to get approximately 7 techs (from anyone, not just from Alex) before Alex stops trading with you. So, catching up will be more a matter of researching techs that Alex does not know. If another AI ALSO does not know that tech and it is an AI that will trade with you, even better, but it should just be your goal to suck techs off of Alex by teching for techs that Alex does not know, for the next little while.

Spoiler :

I didn't get any favors from the RNG on Kish, and lost the Cat and two Axes. At that point, I waited for reinforcements (which I probably shouldn't have done, but there you have it). Beyond that, I didn't trade Paper away until someone besides Monty had it. I was only two turns from Lib when I lost it, and would have taken Gilg's other city in a turn or two.

IDK. I'm just finding this particular game very frustrating, and the transition to Gkey's 400AD save didn't work for me at all. I don't understand what he's doing in some of those cities (Markets? WTH?) and why he's went into Pacifism and stopped building troops in the middle of an effin' war. I'm sure there is a good reason, but it didn't make sense to me and I found myself unable to figure out how to play from that save forward. I don't have the time or inclination to try again, so I won't be submitting a save for this round.

It is indeed a challenge to pick up from where someone else left off.

I definitely removed at least one Market, an Aqueduct, and a couple of other build items from the build queues.

I also did things like firing the Scientists in Washington and growing the City until AFTER the National Epic was completed, at which point I hired 1 Engineer and 4 Scientists (I had been running the Engineer the whole time, though, to help with pumping out the National Epic). I replaced the Cottages there with Farms (except the Flood Plains Cottage) and plan to keep growing the City slowly so as to later be able to add a couple of more Specialists.

The Rice + Jungle City, where he was building a Workshop, got that Workshop and yet another Workshop over top of a different Cottage, so as to give the City a reasonable amount of production.

I also made sure to chain some Farms down to the Wheat City to the SW that we captured from Gilgamesh, so as to give the Wheat square +1 Food.

That's some tough luck. Still, I used the Maceman to attack first, since it was all but guaranteed to win, which took out the best defender for me. I think that I didn't even attack with the catapult at all, prefering to save it for bombarding the second City's defences. With Chariots, you can use them first if your Axemn attackers don't have good odds of winning, since the Chariots have a chance to retreat and survive to fight another day.

stopped building troops in the middle of a... war.
Yeah, we need far more troops if we're going to continue the fight by going after either Bismarck or Monte next. Most of our Cities have sufficient infrastructure to be able to just pump Military units everywhere immediately, but I took a bit more of a Builder-like approach and built Forges and Granaries everywhere, plus a few Harbours, before going for Barracks and Military Units.

Even I'm building too many buildings this way, given the momentum that we have against Gilgamesh that we should be able to carry forward against the next opponent with our large amount of Cities.
