WC 2006: Group E

Somewhat disappointing second half by the US and Ghana there; the US just not good enough and Ghana playing to keep the lead with over half an hour to go. Plus Ghanaians going down and rolling around in agony at every opportunity - you can tell they have a European coach ;).

I don't think they're overly worried in Brazil.

This game showed that the US still has a long way to go to be truly competitive in international play. We have decent athletes, and we have decent talent, and I though we played aggressively on the ball in the 2nd half, but we really lacked the finely tuned touch with the ball that a better team has.

Another thing that disappointed me was the reluctance to shoot. We were always looking to play it to the middle for a header; there are a few time where I think we would have been better off if someone just took the shot. There was one point in particular near the end where Donovan had a defender in front and to the left and he was in the top of the box on the right side. Now I'm not a big soccer guy, so maybe this advice isn't practical, but I think he should have switched it to his right side and just let it fly. His free kick from just outside the box near the end was awful, too. Not a good cup for him at all.

The US was unlucky that the PK was called, but the way the US was playing they didn't deserve to win. They had some good chances to score around the 65th minute (McBride off the post, Onyewu just over the goal), but they didn't create as many opportunities as they should have knowing they needed a win.

This was the only game where I didn't feel the other team was better than the US. Against Czech the US played terrible and I think even though they tied Italy you could tell Italy was better than the US.

I was yelling at the TV for Donovan to take a touch toward the goal and shoot it there.

Donovan will need to produce something quickly, otherwise he won't go on time to switch his image of talented kid that didn't handle the pressure and demandings of top game...

I didn'yt watch Ghana-USA because I only got the channel that was broadcasting Italy's game. I guess the czechs were defeated by two main factors in this WC: the absence of fire power (Koller, Baros, Smicer injured, Lokvenc not good enough and got a red card) and especially the old legs of their main players. Ultimately they couldn't find a way to go far with so many old players past it, especially at midfield. Their best player in the WC was Cech, which isn't a good sign for the players in front of him. In the second halves of the last couple of games, the midfield could no longer come down to help the defence and there were always gigantic highways towards their goal. They were quite lucky in the end to just loose those two games by two goals and avoiding leaving the WC with a humiliation. But they also could have scored today, it was just that if on their goal line there's one of the two best goalies in the world, the other one features on Italy's goal...

My view on the two games:

Overall: Two rather bad and, given the situation, surprisingly unexciting matches. Plus horrible refereeing, more on that later...

Czech Republic vs. USA:

Again my view on the Czechs was confirmed. Poborsky is old, Rosicky can't play against any but the most lacklustre defenses (where was he today, again?) and thus their only good offensive player (apart from the goalie) is the sadly aged Nedved plus to some degree Jankulovski.
Nedved really tried everything and would at least have deserved a goal for himself. The Italians fell back into their usual style of play, intelligent and efficient though not particularly exciting. A deserved win for sure, but not at all a good match.
Two more problems for the Czechs: 1. what the hell was Polak thinking? 2. Jiri Stajner...

Ghana vs. USA:

Also a rather bad match but in this case I don't think of the result as deserved. A draw would have been more correct given the way the match went and if not for that ridiculous penalty that's what it would have been. It'll be interesting to see if Merk really has Collina status now, i.e. if most people will start justifying even the most obviously wrong decisions of his by the good old "he knows better"...
Back to the match itself, though. The US tried alot, their fighting spirit is applaudable. Sadly they essentially lack quality to beat teams like Ghana and Italy. Good for Ghana though, who overall deserve to advance to the second round.

I'd say the group got the deserved result with Italy coming in first and Ghana second. Maybe the US would have deserved third, but they were unlucky and too scared in that first match against the overrated Czechs.

Is it a cultural thing that we simply don't rush into traffic or shoot from 25 yards? Good things happen when you force the action and make the ref make a decision. I see the USA going side to side and backwards way too much to be a threat. The one time Convey rushed in he was fouled, why didn't they do it more?

Because the several other times they would start trying to dribble, the ball would get stripped. And someone with balls (read guts) tries to hold firm instead of clearing and gives up a goal. Then Bocanegra doesn't clear properly and that leads to a penalty kick. Defense needs to be conservative and offense 'almost' reckless, not the other way around!

The 4-5-1 was absolutely horrible the whole cup. Eddie Johnson should have started and we should have gone to a 3-5-2 or 4-4-2.

Donovan had a bad day, but the couple of times he had good crosses, people couldn't connect. One time on a corner kick, someone ducks their head before turning it to strike the ball. But by ducking, the ball goes just over his head!

The game should have ended in a draw. US played almost respectably, though I would have liked to see more energy from them like they did in the final 10-15 minutes.

Ghana didn't play well enough to deserve a win but they deserved to advance. They just lucky on the penalty kick and lucky (in a sense) on Reyna's mistake. But they pounced on their opportunities. But they didn't create too many chances to score (just a few).

I think Essien has like 10-15 shots in the tournament (more than the whole US team), but I doubt one of his shots have been on target. He's willing to shoot from anywhere but he's been off this tournament. Yet his presence in the next game will be sorely missed because he's such a presence on the field.

And I really hate the time killing in soccer. Almost as bad as dives.

Could someone go and tell the players fro Ghana to get up from the grass and stop faking injuries, they won.

Pathetic.

If you ever wonder why Football is not that big in North AMerica, there you have it: faking.

I have a newfound respect and liking for soccer, I had always kinda wondered about it from afar since I couldnt watch it much. Now I feel like following some of the European leagues if I can, and even MLS. But I agree, the faking is the only thing taking away from it.

So...much...faking. Turn OFF the clock for "injuries", this will eliminate the need to fake. Well, except for the floppers, but that is a problem that you cant really fix just like in basketball.

Glad Ghana advanced, I was a little dissapointed when Angola didnt make it, I wanted to see at least 1 African team...not over the USA mind you, but better than the Czechs in my mind.

Italian game was already annouced as very defensive some days ago.
We were both good and lucky today. I'm just sorry for Nedved and the others playing in Italy (Jankulovski etc.).
Totti was awful.

The Ghanese victory instead surprised me, I predicted the USA to win, considering the fact that they might know that italy was winning and that their destiny depended only on themselves.
But I haven't seen USA-Ghana, so I can't tell exactly what happened.
And it wasn't neither a good knews for me hearing Ghana scoring, cause with 6 points forced us to win (the 1-0 wasn't safe at all. I know that they were in 10, but Nedved runs for 2)

If you want my 2 cents, try to follow the Champions League.
It's the competition that has the highest concentration of talents in the world, if you follow it you won't even bother watching minor Serie A or Premiership games.
Thus, it will be easier for you to keep track of the groups and the knockout phase (it works exactly like the world cup, except that every playoff match is played twice (home and away) with away goals rule).
Following a whole league in my opinion doesn't make much sense if you don't root for a team and follow its games every week.

Yep, the CL is what got me hooked when they'd show a game every Tuesday or Wednesday on ESPN.

I agree: Even people who're not the biggest football fans out there, get excited with the Champions League and the very high quality the players have(meaning, very nice and beautiful football indeed!!!)

***bold by me.

The announcers on ESPN were poor. They kept going on and on about the call giving Ghana the penalty kick. Ok, even if Ghana doesn't get that call, the game is still a tie and Ghana still advances. I wish them luck vs. Brazil.

Bruce Arena is toast. Landon Donovan is toast.
MLS needs to let their best play in the Euro leagues. The world didn't catch up in basketball until their best started playing in the NBA.
