Welcome to Giant Earth Map (GEM)!

I've been playing GEM for about a year and am continually astounded by the quality of the product, thanks Ghengis and co.

I am having a problem since I upgraded to 3.19 and downloaded the new 6.2.1 GEM update. When I try to load the mod the game reboots then goes to a Vista screen saying BTS has stopped working and never starts up.

I am running a vista 64 bit system, with 4 GB of ram, a core 2 duo at 2.0 GHz, and an ATI 4650 notebook card.

Please help I'm at quite a loss. The game runs fine but if I try to load this mod it crashes.

Well there's nothing wrong with your system.

1) Were you previously using the 3.17 patch? Apparently 3.19 only works if 3.17 was installed first.

2) Are you sure you've put the GEM folder in the right place? Sounds silly, but I've been playing a while too and still managed to put it in the wrong place the other day and had to move it.

I have the 3.17 version of BTS from direct2drive. I upgraded to 3.19 using the "check for updates" button in the game.

I also double checked my path documents/my games/beyond the sword/mods/GEM, so I think I'm good there...

Any other ideas?

Erm, well i'm no expert at all, but I have heard bad things about the d2d compatability with certain mods. If you check on a download host site for the patch to download, see if there are different versions of 3.19 for d2d and standard.

I'd hope someone else might be able to help you otherwise.

Ps So you're saying the mod won't even load, never mind start? (Do you get as far as it saying 'Giant Earth Map' in the top right corner?)

Theres your Problem. you need to install it into your BTS game folder/mods. Mine is in 2k Games/Friaxis/Civilisation/bts/mods.

also make sure you don't change the mod folder name from Giant Earth Map

Ok, so I uninstalled the game and then went to D2D's website and downloaded their patch, reinstalled the game and ran the D2D patch. The game loaded up properly and allowed me to get into a GEM game (good news), however, when I settled my first city my gold revenue spiked to over 1000000 per turn and my warrior was given unlimited promotions (bad news of course). I walked by other civs and found that all their warriors were given unlimited promotions too...

Rather odd I know. Not sure if this is a problem elsewhere or still a D2D problem. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the help thus far Adhesive86 and cheesemijit, hopefully you have some more ideas on how to fix the new probs...

So I think I figured it out. I uninstalled the BUG mod and ran a quick trial. It seemed to run fine. Thanks again for the help. Problem solved....

Well this has been tried and whilst it fell apart for different reasons, PBEM was taking about 2 weeks per turn. It was going to take years to complete. Real time may be different but rather annoying if people MAF.

If you want to organise then I'll play.

I tried using this map for my mod, and it crashed. Is there a version of this map compatible for other mods?

Indeed, I've been thinking of calling for another PBEM, after almost a year since our last attempt.

I am thinking of running this PBEM game with only five players, each playing one nation ONLY. These nations are: Britain, America, Russia, Germany and Japan. I think keeping it simple is the only way to avoid disputes.

Cheesemijit and Adhesive, are you interested?

Ive never done PitBoss before but i suppose its the only way to play a whole game. sounds interesting though.

However i start college on monday so i will only be able to do turns after 5pm on weekdays.

Not sure about PitBoss, but PBEM would certainly do as we did it before. Not to worry about play speed. We can try 1 week/turn (so average one working day/player).

I am making some modifications for another minor release lately, may be we can start planning and by the time I release it, we can start a game on the new version?

i thought Pitboss was PBEM, whats the difference? and i could manage more than one turn per week. more like one turn per day.

Pitposs requires someone to manage a server and everyone logs on to it to play; PBEM is Play-By-E-Mail, i.e. each player play their turn and then email the saved game to the next person.

Pitposs should be a faster way to handle, as I think player can play simultaneously; PBEM has a fixed player order so it requires longer wait to get a chance for your own turn.

I cleaned the modern resource map and gave it 13 playable civs. I was able to upload it and play it until I added my custom DLL then it crashed. Should I just leave it as it is or is there a way I could incorporate my DLL? Please help I want to use my custom but looking at this I don't think it's going to work.
