What about new utilities?

I always felt the need for adding more unit slots to the game- so far everybody has told me it is hardcoded and very difficult to change (if at all)- but perhaps somebody knows more than me.

In Civ3 one can add an amazing ammount of extra units- and even TOT has one additional row in the units file... oh I could do such nice things if there was more space...

One topic somewhat related to this discussion: Has anyone been able to figure out the SAV file format ? I'm especially interested in the difference between the different Civ2 versions (in particular the Classic vs. MGE SAV files). Being able to convert SAV files from e.g. MGE to Classic would be interesting as well as hacking the SAV files. One idea: Add AI civs to an SAV file to get more than 7 civs. I'd expect the game to crash when loading such a file but it might be worth trying if it hasn't already been tried.

It's been tried already, and it just doesn't work.

Each civ isn't just detailed by one block of info, but the info is all over the place... And in a lot of these places the number of civs are in some way or another restricted to 1 byte. 1 byte is 8 bits, so 8 (7 + barbarians) is all you can get, unless you feel like reverse engineering Civ2.
