I'm looking for some mods to enhance and make my game better, and I was wondering what everyone else uses or recommends.

Are there any essential mods?

thank you

As stated, it's a matter of taste, but the Civ V art Mod and Tsunami Waves Lite make the game look 101% better to me and are just about required for me to enjoy the game at all.

After that, Faster Starting Settlers and Extended Initial Vision make up for the generally execrable starting positions and give a bit of 'nomadism' to the start of the game.

Most of the rest are trying out the Mod Communities' idea of Civs and alternate leaders - some of them are utterly Over the Top and Imbalanced, but some - like Sukritect's Gaul and Ethiopia - are quite good and catch a lot of the 'spirit' of their prototypes.

Are you me?

That's pretty much exactly what I would name as my "must-have" mods. There are several others I like, such as Terra Mirabilis for example, although that approach is probably not for everyone.

I use Terra Mirabilis, but I 'reset' the Mod to generate about 25% fewer Wonders - still more than the Base Game, but not quite the Profusion of Wonders with which the Mod normally covers the map - I was getting Scouts promoted ridiculously with the original Mod . . .

CQUI adds a lot of nice UI features that make common operations less tedious. It is still missing a couple of pre-Gathering Storm features, but what is there works again.

More Lenses is a great UI mod (or CQUI for a package of useful UI tweaks). The worker lens is very helpful in identifying various types of workable tiles.

I'm a fan of Steel and Thunder as well, which add extra units to fill in a few gaps in the unit lists (stuff like trebuchets and riflemen). There is also one for unique units, which adds an extra unique unit to each civ. Added to this are all the R.E.D. mods, which reduce the actual size of the units on the world map to be less immersion breaking (there's a bunch; one for each DLC and xpac, as well as one for the base Steel and Thunder mod).

And just for aesthetics, I have fallen in love with Rosetta, which renames cities from the English/current world names to the names used by the particular civilization that owns the city.

Quo's rocketboots. Adds +1 move to all units. I've had it on from almost day one. Really alleviates VI's slow movement system.

Theres one that adds reindeer to snow and tundra that makes tundra spawns more tolerable. Sukritact also has a resources mod that adds a few flavor resources, like camels in the desert, without going as over the top as "resourceful".

There's a new one I'm trying out by Pokhiel that improves the encampment by giving it some adjacencies and a few other tweaks. Makes them more fun to build.

Anything by Sukritact is Good Mod: Civs like Ethiopia, Iceland, Gaul, Tibet, Siam and Burma, Alternate Leaders like Hadrian for Rome, new Natural Wonders like the Grand Canyon, Tongle Sap and Blue Hole, and his Resources, which, as you say, is "just enough" without being overwhelming.

Give you fair warning, though: the Reindeer resource addition Mod can make Russia or Canada OP: Reindeer on a Tundra Hill with Woods becomes one of the best single tiles in the entire game!

Yeah, admittedly the reindeer made Canada perfectly tolerable for me. Can only imagine Russia with it.

I have a lot of those others as well. The wonders are fantastic and the few leaders he has that are animated are pretty impressive. Love Gaul.

I find essential the mod that puts the gossip on the side instead of covering up what's going on and then disappearing. I forget the name atm. It goes well with Simplified Gossip, which simplifies those messages so you can more readily skim them.

Also the one that gives you lots of info when you mouse over the leader portraits at the top (Better Diplomacy Ribbon, I think it's called?)

I'll break down some of my favorites, but I am sure I am missing many. Full disclosure: I am a modder and many of these are mods that I have made or contributed to.

USER INTERFACE MODS
FLAVOR MODS (NO GAMEPLAY CHANGES)
  • Vibrant Waters: Redoes the texture of fresh water (lakes, rivers, oases, and certain natural wonders), making the water really pop out.
  • Tsunami Waves or Tsunami Waves - Lite Version: Enlarge the waves that crash against cliffs for a cool visual effect.
  • Unique District Icons: Self explanatory! Unique Districts, like the Acropolis, get unique icons to differentiate them from the generic districts they replace.
  • Random City Names: Randomizes city names better so you won't see the same city names every time.
  • Historic Continent Names: Changes the names of the continents to ancient Greek and Latin names of regions, if you like that sort of history.
  • Rosetta - Dynamic City Names: Automatically changes city names based on their owner's culture. So if Rome captures London, it becomes Londinium. The author keeps it updated with all DLC and with popular modded civs and leaders
  • Improved City Names: By the same author as Rosetta above. Adds thousands of city names for all the game's civs and popular modded civs.
  • Proverbium: Adds over 550 quotes to the game for Techs, Civics, Wonders, and Natural Wonders. Very awesome.
MAP SCRIPTS
  • Detailed Worlds: Makes really great and interesting maps, with multiple script options like Small Continents, Mixed Continents, Island Regions, etc.
  • PerfectWorld6: is the successor to the excellent PerfectWorld scripts from Civ 4 and Civ 5. Also has a Terra start option.
  • YNAMP: Intensely popular - I think this is the most subbed mod on the whole workshop. It adds the famous true start location Earth maps, custom larger map sizes, and a Terra map script.
  • Larger Map Sizes: Not a map script; it just adds 3 larger map sizes.
NATURAL WONDERS
  • Terra Mirabilis: One of my favorite mods ever. Adds 13 new, beautiful natural wonders, is going to be updated with more, and makes such fun and interesting changes to Natural Wonder gameplay.
  • Sukritact's Natural Wonders: Sukritact releases his Natural Wonders individually, but this is the link to the collection he made where you can see them all at once. By the way, all of his wonders work very well together with Terra Mirabilis too!
RELIGION
  • Religion Expanded: Adds a ton of content, including nearly 50 new beliefs, new buildings (with 3D models), and the ability for up to 16 religions to be founded per game rather than just 7, so even on Deity you can found a religion!
  • Better Pantheons: Buffs all the Pantheons in the game (except Earth Goddess) to provide more interesting choices; the changes also help the AI pick pantheons more effectively.
  • Ancient Egyptian Pantheons: Adds 10 fun new Ancient Egyptian-themed Pantheons, directly inspired by the Gift of the Nile scenario from the Nubia DLC.
  • Tomatekh's Historical Religions: Adds hundreds of historical religions to the game for you and the AI to found, with historically appropriate updates for AI preferred religions. Note that this does not affect any Beliefs - it is a flavor mod with more foundable religion icons.
  • Zebenji's Additional Religions: This adds some more religions to found, including funny or silly religions from pop culture.
  • All the mods listed in this section are compatible with one another!
RESOURCES
  • CIVITAS Resources and Sukritact's Resources: Both of these mods add a handful of nice, balanced, pretty resources. They are both compatible with one another, of course. My favorite from each are Penguins from CIVITAS Resources and Sharks from Sukritact's Resources :)
  • Truly Abundant Resources: Adds a new resource setting -- Truly Abundant -- for when you want maps to have even more resources!
CITY STATES
  • City States Expanded: Adds over 40 new city states to the game, each with very cool suzerain bonuses. It also adds 4 new city state types to the game. Really spices up that aspect of the game.
UNITS
  • Steel and Thunder: Adds 11 new global units to the game. It really fills in the gaps between some unit upgrade paths.
  • Steel and Thunder - Unique Units: This is a sister mod to Steel and Thunder and adds 1 new unique unit for every civ in the game.
GENERAL GAME PLAY
Whew! That's a lot of mods. There are many many other great mods out there, but this hopefully gives you a taste.

Currently subbed to:

"Notification Log" - turns all the popups into a clickable on the left side of the screen, no longer do I miss all the action because someone was telling me Pedro built a district.

Sukritacts's "Ngrongoro Crater" and "Blue Hole" - I just like these two :pat:

"Real Great People" - cool little graphical update

"Colorized Historical Moments" - literally just colors them in, they look better this way to me.

YnAMP - because I like the big earth maps

"Quick Start" - screw you startup videos :hammer:

"Tomatekh's Historical Religions" - makes the religions a lot more interesting and helps mix it up a little

"Proverbium" - replaces all the quotes, by far the most essential mod for long term enjoyment of Civ6.
