Hi all.
Not tried any mods yet, and there are so many it's hard to decide which are worthwhile or don't work with each other.

Which mods do you use most?
Do you download through steam or the forum?
Which should be avoided?
Is there any risk downloading and using them?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

InfoAddict
Trade Opportunities
Notebook City View
Farm Graphic Replacement
Mine Science
Extra Buildings
In Game Editor

My favourite mods are:

(1) WHoward's Trade Opportunities

(2) Rob K's InfoAddict

WHoward's mods used to be available from the Steam Workshop but in December 2012 WHoward removed all his mods from the Workshop, as explained in post #39 in this discussion thread. Instructions for downloading his mods can be found here.

InfoAddict + Civ 5 Unofficial Patch is a must have combo, although it is pretty largely bugged.
The Ancients - for fun OP games (also possible to play together with unofficial patch)
Dalmasca and Glados civilizations
Beyond the future (10 additional techs and longer tech victory - Mars Colonization instead of Moon)
Better Bakt'un for Maya civ

I thought the space race was for Alpha Centauri. Living on the Moon sounds just dull anyway....

Just my 2:commerce:

Thanks for that. I'll check them out for my next game.

Dalmasca and Glados civilizations

How are these two mod civs in your opinion, Sidor?

The only one I've tried, pre-patch, was the Harkonnen one, and boy that civ had some really cool toys but extremely tough start biases. Like 10/10 games will start next to Pachacuti or some ridiculous warmonger bunch and get rushed real early for 7 - and the UA really weakens your units while on the defense!

Dalmasca has desert tiles bonus (+1 food, gold, production) and that's including polders. As you were staring with a Petra in all of your cities. Just take a strongly desert map (like sandstorm) and have fun.
Glados has double science output but population cost causes 133% more unhappiness in cities (+1 pop causes -4 happiness).
You can have some really interesting games with these two.

Infoaddict, without that I feel like I'm playing blind.

No AI Free Pottery, because I want to start on a relatively level playing field when trying for a pantheon at higher difficulties.

Subscribed.

Some first pre-game thoughts: I don't have the Sandstorm map pack, but Dalmasca should be fun on any "Arid" type world map... especially if they have Arabia and Netherlands nearby. Their Armory UB looks interesting too - its like a Ceilidh Hall and a Krepost packed into one.

But the one that really catches me is GLADOS... and its Sentry Gun UU. Man those would be absolutely useful strategic resource garrisons in your core empire, especially if it was surrounded by unfriendly CSes who just got bought by your faraway foes. I definitely think it has the potential to be a really overpowered runaway(actually yes it looks like it) but I haven't tried having any UB that costs -12 gpt maintenance fee and it looks like you are still able to get away with early game warmongering even with the increased unhappiness. Fascinating stuff.

There are definitely some good mods listed here. These are mine that I use pretty much every game:

-Ethnic units (Definitely a must have for me, its simple but gives an added "spice" for each civ. I prefer it over R.E.D. because my laptop is low end and I have to play in windowed mod and R.E.D. are too small)
-Historic Religions (Gives a lot more options for religions than the base 10, more variety IMO. Also tweaked for each civ to have a preferred religion)
-Infoaddict
-Some of WHowards mods, such as Notification options and trade opportunities
-I use the Unofficial Patch only when using the GEM mod. Using GEM makes it almost a different game at times (in a good way)
-Cultural Diffusion (like in CIV, each tile has its own % of culture and they can flip. Also, options can be tuned to allow military units capture tiles, etc
-Cultural Capitols (there are cultural "elections" that happen every set number of turns and if your civ wins, a city at random is chosen and you can receive either a permanent or temporary bonus, such as increased production or workers, just for a couple examples
-The Visigoths (fun new civ to play as)
-More City States (just adds more CS to the game but from what ive read, it can cause conflicts at times since some of the CS added are also part of some added civs, Tyre comes to mind)
