I'm brand new to Civ in general, and was wondering what I'm supposed to do once I max out science to 100%, but I've still got 1-2k in the coffers? can I buy out buildings/techs somehow?

Yes, you can rush wonders, but not projects... 1-2k isn't really that much... have you upgraded all your units? I think I spent 7k on rushing a half finished three gorges dam...

Yikes...maybe that's my problem. I don't upgrade them except level them up when they come out of the barracks or happen to kill a few other units. I didn't realize you could manually upgrade them with gold? :P

Once you get the Universal Suffrage civic you can started to rush buy you buildings with gold. Until then you can use gold to upgrade units, like that single warrior you still have defending your size 17 capital later in the game. If you have the Spy unit you can also use gold to strategically destroy tile improvements in neighboring civs who you don't like (chance to get caught but hey nothing is free). Lastly, you can always use gold in diplomacy. You can use the gold to help buy a tech or maybe a resource you don't have.

Just some tips for you. As you increase the difficulty setting gold won't be as plentiful :)

Thanks guys. The gold in diplomancy sounds obvious, but I didn't think of it at the time. Just so I don't have to start another thread...anyone know why I can't start a defensive pact with someone? it's not in red, but when I try to add it to 'the table' at the bottom, it doesn't add at all. Maybe they have to be friendly/pleased only? I can't remember if he was cautious/annoyed or not.

Not sure. Maybe you have to have open boarders first than work you way up to defensive pact. Also, and this sounds obvious but still have to say it, are you sure you have the tech researched that enables defensive pacts? I've seen that in Civ4 that when you have the ability to research a tech it gives you a shaded out option while playing. Maybe to tempt/remind you that this is what you'll get if you choose to research it?

so it goes red->shaded grey->enabled? That might be it then...I can't check as I'm at work right now. I came in second place last time I played on Noble, but after reading these forums I think I'm ready to kick some butt later.

By "upgrade" he means change the unit type to something more advanced, like archers to infantry or chariots to cavalry. That costs gold, and usually a fair amount of it. You can't buy promotions though.
