For those of you who play it what makes RoN a good game to you? What could be improved?

For me the different cultural impressions (armies, UU's, architecture, ect..) all add flavor to the game, the increasing cost of units add a gameplay balance, and establishment and growth of cities adds a fresh element to the RTS genre.

The lack of a variety in music, naval combat, and campaign replayability are not strong points and limit my enjoyment of the game.

Thoughts?

I think naval combat is fleshed out well. I usually play land maps, though. I do like the balance, as you can win with every nation.

I just got it last week, but I'm enjoying it. Perhaps if there was more time allowed for the conquer the world campaigns it would allow for better strategy...

Or maybe to allow multiple attacks launched in a turn...

There are mods available to increase the length of time the campaigns last (at least it was so for the campaign in the original game). I do not recall where you can find such mods, however, though they probably only modify an ini file.

Maybe it was better if you could play 1 nation with 2 humans. So one can check on the resources and development, while the other uses the military aspect at best.
I couldnt find this option.

The one change I would make is that in a campaign, if you get attacked and take the attacking civilization's capital (as opposed to merely holding out for 90 minutes), you should win the territory, same as if you initiated the attack.

My only complaint with RoN was that it was way to easy, i mastered the game in just 2 weeks which left me with almost no replayabilaty.

Collecting resource is too easy. If I have researched enough commerce tech. and have enough workers, I feel I will never run out of resource.

When I first bought RoN i though it was good but stopped playing it fairly quickly - due to the lack of campaigns which meant skirmish games against the computer got boring. I got the expansion pack which meant I played it a bit more but got bored again.
Recently I have got broadband and a LAN and I have started to play it every night against my house mate (or with him against the computer). I think it is a pretty good single player game but an excellent multi-player game.
I like the fact is a bit like playing Civ on speed. You cant sit back for a second and do nothing otherwise youll fall behind. I once thought I was doing quite well and was quite proud of my large army, equipped with the shiniest pikemen and archers - imagine my horror when out of the blue they were bulldozed by my opponents tank army.

You can share a nation. I can't remember exactly how this second, but I think you either have to the the same player number, or pick the same color. And I believe you must be on a team. It's happened serveral times when me and my friends play over a LAN. Experiment and you should get it. Oh yeah, 3 people controlling same nation is sick.

I like how it is more faster paced then civ, I have liked RTS ever since I was first inroduced into the first command and conquer

I think there should be more music, same tracks get boring quickly (but it's not that big flaw).
CTW campaign also gets repetative after barbarians have been destroyed because when you attack other nation's territory there are no third parties to add flavour to combat.

Otherwise it's pretty good.

commerce caps.
they're :):):):) useless ingame as I always have people farming, logging and mining in all my cities. also, my empire is SO LARGE, the taxation alone is gonna hit OVER 9000! i want commerce caps removed so that i can get MOAR!!!

i had the same experience with RoN. the game presented no challenge at all. although when it came out i was intensely curious about the entire concept behind the game.

the naval warfare is horsehockey, you build ships way too fast, i remember losing a 80 industrial era ships fleet to 3 ports that kept sending from 1 and 1 ships against my fleet. because of this i play mostly land maps.

and the Diplomacy is sucky, at one time the AI declares war on you and never again declare peace because he just is like :):):):) and gets like disabled diplomacy.

oh yeah i forgot the diplo. all the times the AI always wanna **** me up, plunder my cities and kill my people. so I usually play solo.

I played the game multiplayer when it first came out. It was my favorite except the fact that after a few patches it became difficult to get through a game without it going out of synch and crashing. Never played it single player, ai in most RTS games must be very difficult to program as I've not really seen one that wasn't horrible.

I always found the Conquer the World campaign to be disappointing. Sure, it was pretty novel to pick your own scenarios rather than follow a story line, but the number of turns was so limiting, nations died out so quickly and the complete separation of tactical and strategic game play, i.e. no amount of successful economy building at the tactical level was represented at the strategic level, and it didn't matter whether I attacked from a level one territory or a level 8 territory I always started with one city three farms, always left me a bit cold after a while.

Well, that and the game was so easy that you always finished before you got to the last 2 epochs, which were naturally the most fun (at least for me). That and navies are basically completely useless except when you need to make a landing. Also landing battles are THE most fun because they were actually different, and therefore more fun.
