What does it mean for a town when 5-6 businesses close up within a single year? Should I consider moving away?

Is this a town will 100 businesses or 7 businesses?

Different types. Mostly retail. A lot of them were long-time.

The strange thing is that 2 businesses announced they were closing within a day or two of each other just this week.

Ahh, so these aren't just petty little boutiques...hmm...not really much to go off here. Need more info.

I think you will find with the economy as it is, anywhere you might move is experiencing exactly the same thing.

What does it mean when a small shack in the middle of nowhere that calls itself a 'furniture store' says that it's having a closing sale, and 1 year later, it's still having that sale? (No, it isn't abandoned.)

The bad economy, having to compete with the big box stores and online stores.

Amazon and Wal-Mart have destroyed the old brick and mortar, small scale retail business.

The local businesses that seem to be thriving are convenience stores, fast-food and predatory payday loan companies. With the poor job market, the temp agencies probably are doing lots of business too.

They still haven't sold off all the furniture.

That 5-6 businesses closed. We really need more information. They could have been owned by someone who had to close it due to an illness, lack of interest, retirement, death, or they just weren't doing very well (which could be due to the owner's inability to run it or the economy, or just the wrong type of store for that area).

Spoiler :
Should I consider moving away?

No.

Sometimes it could have nothing to do with your area in particular, but with the big picture. The town I used to live had a large Woolworths, which I understand was quite profitable, because it filled a niche in the limited retail facilities of the town. The problem is, in the rest of the country it was redundant and unprofitable, so the entire company closed down, taking our branch with it. What's really telling is how long it takes for somebody else to buy the space, and in this economy, that might take longer than you've yet had.

i dunno how woolworths survived so long, especially my local one, they were never particularly good value and it was about 2 minutes walk from a massive tesco, but then iceland moved in almost straight away, it actually seems we have less empty shops here than at any time i can remember

They exist, an tbh, they look pretty cool!

People spend less money lately. It's a normal thing that some businesses will have to close. People buy clippers instead of going to the barbershop. People don't buy expensive clothes or dishwashers etc etc.
Or it means a walmart just opened nearby, no joke.

Many retail business make a substantial portion of their annual profits in the weeks running up to Christmas.

They may not have been doing well and decided to stay open until Christmas was over and then cut their losses.
